Bonnet release catch/latch

11 posts in this topic

Evening all, so I think my bonnet release cable snapped or came loose today.

I now cannot open the bonnet as the handle inside the car just flaps about with no resistance.

Anybody else had this?

Can you help me?

Thanks.

Luckily I haven't, but I recall it being an issue on Mk5s. Are you under warranty? If so I'd head on down to the dealer.

I had it in my Mk 5. I needed a new catch and cable. I had to call out VW Assistance as I couldn't get my bonnet shut and had a 200 mile journey to do!

Quick update

Was an easy cheap fix of about £10. It turns out that a black sleeve/clip that holds the cable in (sat on top of the headlight) had cracked and allowed the cable to escape.

Pic below of black clip/holder thing.

How did you get the bonnet open to apply said fix?

Was it a dealer fix? or you bought part / replaced? Like for like ? or improved part so it wont happen again?

Remove driver side arch liner or just unscrew it to get your hand up grab cable and get somebody to pull the handle in car at the same time then bonnet popped. My body shop did it for me.

Cable was fine, just black plastic cover was cracked pictured above so clipped it off and fitted just that section from the new one rather than replacing the whole cable.
