Hey guys, so an update, I had a guy out for £180 top bloke, but I need the mib2 upgrade USB for android auto to work! My car has an age crisis, software is 2015, 66 plate but registered in 2017 😂 he's sent me a link for the upgrade so my oh will swap it over when it arrives... But my shouty woman works on the steering wheel... Which is a great bonus!

Tarox 8 Pot BBK Kit Update.

Having owned my Tarox kit for some 20 months I’m on my second set of Pads. The kit is immense and if you can get a deal via a supplier or go direct to Tarox UK it’s worth every penny. So this month the discs and bells are being sent back to Italy for a “free” Refurb as part of the package. It’s a two week turn around but luckily I’m away over the two weeks and don’t need the car for daily use. There’s a couple of ‘high’ spots on the disc surface caused by excess pad material which will be polished out as it’s microns thick and invisible but when hot sometimes you can feel it thru the pedal but oddly not when cold. There are now 3 new pad options ranging up to Endurance which is a Race pad but still works well on the road but news that Pagid have been working with Tarox on this kit and are introducing their FL 29 pad set for this kit. These are mighty pads but are costly prices have yet TBC. I’ll update this thread when the work is complete as I’m trying out Endurance pads thru recommendation.

    Pretoria reps - bolt seating

Yeah only because lowered, although loads run 235 lowered without a problem. The PS4S is such a square tyre so the shoulders of the tyre don’t taper away like others which caused my problem. Sorted by removing the screw and tucking the arch liner in so no drama really. Must say the offset of the CM wheels suit the golf perfectly

    MK7 R DSG - New(ish) owner!

Hi all, Thought I'd finally introduce myself as I've owned my R now since June. I've moved from a number of reasonbly quick cars such as a ED30 GTI, Polo GTI 6R, then a BMW M135i which was unfortunately stolen (🤬) and burnt out, a CLA220D for a few months but that definitely did not scratch the itch... so here I am with an R! After 7 days of owning the car I took it to spa, here she is outside our AirBNB after performing faultlessly on the way there. Unfortunately I didn't get to take it round as I was too busy in the pits helping out a team I sponsor (which was a very surreal experience in itself). After a few months following the trip having got used to the car, I noticed that the car had some very slight jerkiness at low speeds. Having had a mechatronic unit failure on an ED30 GTI, it went straight to the dealership (with 5 days of warranty remaining no less) for inspection. Initially diagnosed as mechatronics but upon changing this it still wasn't fixed; VW then changed the clutches and bingo issued resolved and me with a nice new mech unit/clutch setup... as such... tuning time. JB4 went on a couple of weeks back, I ran it in map 2 for a while and it seemed much quicker than stock although very aggressive - from doing some lurking around the forums I noticed that a firmware update was available so I carried this out and switched to the new Map 3. In my opinion this seems a much smoother map and doesn't seem slower at all, although I could be wrong and welcome anyones input who has more knowledge than me (that is not difficult). My take over the M135i for anyone interested is that before the JB4 the car wasn't in the same league, pretty dull actually by comparison but largely down to the 4WD arrangement is my guess. However, the JB4 has completely altered this and I'm like a kid at Christmas once more... for now. With the car now out of warranty I'm taking it to Awesome GTI next week for the obligatory haldex service/filter clean along with an interim service - with a few holidays looming this year, including the full 4 days at Goodwood, it's been very difficult to not say "just chuck us an R600, elbow and hose on there". Although I'm pretty sure that is next on the agenda very shortly. The cadiz have to go, I just love the look of the prets so much, but at present I can't justify 4 figures for new wheels when there is greater performance on offer. I'm hoping to get my posts up so I can access the classifieds and do some lurking for some good deals, so will post on the picture thread and other bits and bobs. Look forward to speaking to you all Ian

    Sudden burst of ads?

Ok guys, while this costs us money, I appreciate that the ads placed automatically by Adsense were OTT. I've removed some locations and reduced the ad load right down to the minimum setting - this should drastically reduce the number of ads between posts. This may take a few hours to take affect.

Perfectly normal. Not sure the reason behind it but when lowering my own I disconnected the driveshaft and was able to do using that gap.

    Sudden burst of ads?

I’ll check it out. I did enable a setting that lets Google Adsense determine the most suitable locations for ads. It’s pretty much due to that. It isn’t a conscious decision. Due to proper work I haven’t been in here much recently so I’ll have a poke around and sort it out. Obviously, as I’m sure you can appreciate, we do need some ads to keep the lights on, but we don’t wish to have an overwhelming volume. It isn’t cheap to run a forum of a reasonable size sadly. What I would say is; Tapatalk is a killer for us. We make next to nothing on Tapatalk visits, yet we have still pay for server resources, bandwidth, email notifications etc.

How rare is the akra option?

Coolest car accessory there is in my opinion. My mate paid over £5k for his on his m3 (full system though). Worth every penny. They make Audi performance exhausts for the rs6. Done the f10 M5 too. I probable won’t go for a R without one. Unless you spend £1000’s aftermarket exhausts sound awful and cheapen your car. id much rather have akra than dynaudio tbh.

SpursMadDave has not been banned from the forum, nor has he had any warnings or the like. Assuming therefore, his absence is self imposed. He did seem to get the ‘ump at something I posted in a thread reply but whether or not that related to his absence I don’t know.

How rare is the akra option?

I thought exactly the same when looking for an R.....i ended up buying one with the akro (as it had other options i wanted, along with being one of the very last pre-WLTP production models). I was intending to sell the akro for £2-£3k and just buy a new normal exhaust for £500 and fit it. 12 months later - i still have the akro, and no way am i going to sell it I thought its just noise and a fashion accessory as you say - but if i actively turn that noise down, the car feels dead, weak, as if a load of HP has gone and the engine replaced with a vacuum cleaner. Jumping in a standard R and i get a similar feeling - it's far less dramatic when going full throttle and half the fun is gone. I even got rid of the parcel shelf so i can hear more of the 'noise' when going out to play. I guess the old addage of you don't miss what you never had comes into play here.

Being a Gti it had 225/40/18 so same size as Cadiz Didn’t code or recalibrate the Speedo as the difference is hardly anything as the rolling radius is similar with the lower profile tyre. See here

Lots of ebay & aliexpress sellers still sell keys, IIRC some can even match up from a decent photo of your locking nut/lug bolt. I bought a spare for my R online.

How rare is the akra option?

I would say it's not really even the £40k threshold, it's why pay more for something that adds nothing to the driving. its basically a subjective fashion accessory. exactly the same as someone paying say £2k for special paint.

As above and you will be paying an artificially inflated price for a subjective option. https://www.motors.co.uk/car-55421676/?i=3&m=srs to me, it's easier buying a standard model and fitting a different system.

Welcome to VWROC Ian! Great to see another lovely DBP too. Sounds like you have some plans for your R but are loving it already and putting on the miles. There’s few better things than a DBP R on Prets but I’m unashamedly biased there! Hope you continue to enjoy your R and the forum.

Yes definitely need a lower limit. also, don't quote me on this but I believe police are not allowed to just park outside a pubs car park and stop drivers. if that's fact, then it should be something that's allowed, might deter some.

IIRC most VW dealers have a full set of keys for locking nuts/bolts, so that's where I'd start - maybe get them to remove all 4 locking nuts, or if you are lucky they might even sell you a key (I'd suggest getting a spare and keeping it in a safe place just for situations like this).

    Online Shopping

We are fortunate to live in a place where most things you need are available locally and there is a wide range of supermarkets and national chains within easy reach. For Household groceries/ supplies/ food etc mainly in local village supermarkets, Tesco, M&S. I Browse, research and get prices online. Often use shops to physically see the product prior purchase - dearer things, bigger things, furniture etc. M&S, John Lewis favoured and frequently used because exceptional of customer service received and, often, fairly competitive prices. Good delivery and /or click and collect facilities an added bonus. Buy in local shops sometimes so as not to wait for delivery, and so that they remain here in future. Amazon & eBay for many things outside of this. Made even more convenient by helpful and thoughtful local delivery drivers. City centre shopping avoided unless absolutely essential - parking and hostile, poorly accessible environment to blame for this. Out of Town Shopping Mall preferred as free parking, easily reached and friendly staff, inclusive and accessible facilities and environment. Discount Outlet stores & Centres used selectively, to avoid overpaying for consumables. All Petrol bought locally even if slightly dearer. We Want to support retain local shop petrol station. Use local Newsagent, Chemist, Post Office, barbers routinely. Value these resources. Also try hard to support local businesses for Garden Centre/gardening, plumbing, electrical, building repairs and maintenance. Local tradespeople work hard to get and keep a good reputation, they then get work from word-of-mouth recommendation rather than paying to advertise. My car bought and serviced from family run dealership, not local but this a positive choice for me after dreadful past experiences with local dealers. Second car researched online, bought and serviced through local family run dealership. Use local Pubs, Bars, Restaurants for all occasions. Local Take Aways too get our business. A lot of thought and effort needs to go into being a Consumer, Customer these days as the choices you make will have an impact in the longer term. Phew!

Agree word for word with this. Around two to.three times a year I will go to Solihull mainly for John Lewis. Haven't been to Merry Hell, Wolverhampton or Walsall for over 10 years as there is nothing there for me. Amazon supplies most of what I need and there is a tesco a mile from me for groceries. Hate people in some of these towns and I hate the road systems and parking in them even more.

    Power Folding Mirror retrofit

I got told this too and its a load of utter bs from the dealer I managed to source two power folding mirrors aftermarket for £198, plus also the switch for the interior, that is all you need and is basically plug and play, and the mirrors even have aspherical glass which means it acts as a blind spot type of glass which is better than the OEM VW one. Got a garage to do the VCDS coding, in total will cost me £326 quid.

    Online Shopping

I tend to do most of my non food shopping online. one of key reasons is... I live in Wolverhampton, quite possibly one of the worst places in the country / world. populated by low intelligent cockwombles. the council charge £2.50 an hour for parking, the shops have always been rather wank (first went to Wolves 1980). If you go in to town on a Saturday morning, there is puke, blood and thrown away takeaways on the streets. with the likes of Amazon I can get same day deliveries, for example need a power saw, order 10am, delivered 6pm. also shopping online, means I don't end up driving around the West Midlands trying to find a shop that has stock of an item. the one exception to all this is John Lewis, I have zero problems driving to John Lewis and it's my first stop shop for pretty much everything, decent prices, good warranties, no hassle with exchanges. biggest challenge for shopping online is the varying quality of the logistic companies. DPD, will give me a very good time slot, notification to mobile and even call me prior to delivery. others vary from inept to just unable to give a delivery time other than a 7am to 11pm schedule, which is just utter bollox and shows lack of investment in a quality logistics system. i ordered a Netgear Orbi in Black Friday sales, saved over £100, then by failing to deliver, I received another £100 in vouchers from Amazon. Worked well in the end with a very good overall discount. councils really need to have a good think about how they are managing their towns and cities, as most are trying to grab maximum cash from business rents and public parking, that combination is killing the high street. Once you take out some core shops, then there is no real desire to visit that town or city for shopping. my last couple of cars have on the whole been online or email exchanges, rather than at a dealers. That has been basically to maximise my discount and to give me more control with working out option prices. With some options the monthly payments for a PCP actually decrease when you include them or a mix of them. It it also means I can cover a large number of dealers, brokers, manufacturers without driving around the country. Car are dealerships in Wolverhampton are on a whole ridiculously shit and obviously they are used to selling to the thick cockwomble natives.

    Wheel Protection

Don’t think there’s much in it between the two, Gtechniq and Gyeon, @jrw is the go to guy in here for advice on gyeon coatings and sealants so he may be able to give some useful advice on that. I don’t use either of the above longer term coatings but prefer to seal my wheels on a more regular basis with either a good wheel wax or a decent bodywork sealant which I find gives a better finish and gloss on the silver Prets and if applied monthly/six weekly keeps wheels well protected and really easy to clean at the normal wash.
