It’s that time again....another first detail photo thread. I posted up a bit yesterday in the other general detailing thread but thought I’d start a new thread rather than fill that one with my detailing rubbish. Having collected my new Lapiz 8R (named Snoopy) exactly 3 weeks ago, finally have the time to give him his first detail. As a keen DIY amateur detailer, I enjoy getting intimate with paintwork, so always like to detail my cars myself rather than hand them over to a pro detailer, though half way through with an aching back and frozen fingers, I usually wonder why I didn’t just pay the cash and put my feet up! 🤔 😁 Not finished yet so still a work in progress but here’s the story so far... After being lulled into a false sense of weather security with Sat just gone being a lovely warm sunny spring day, Monday killed that off by turning Siberian! So I stayed in the comfort of my warm house and just stared out of the window at the car feeling guilty I’d not got started. Tues dawned and the weather was no better but as I’m on leave this week I thought it’s now or never, and so after donning several fleecy layers I made a start. The sun did make a VIP appearance for an hour or two before it then started snowing in the afternoon! So before snow stopped play, Tues heralded a thorough wash (as was covered in Saharan sand), followed by the decontamination stages. Bathtime Decon time - Bilt Hamber Auto Wheels Bilt Hamber Korrosol on body work Gyeon Tar on whole car Then clayed using Wo-Wo Clay mitt and Dodo Juice Born Slippy lube (no pics) Followed by another quick wash and ready for a single stage polish today. I had intended to put up my detailing tent (don’t have a useable garage) as it saves the car getting dirty in between stages, but it was just too windy for it. So it remained a lazy bystander. As the tent was a no go, with Snoopy spending the night uncovered and at the mercy of the elements, a layer of overnight frost left behind myriad small spots of sand and dirt on the car, so a super quick wash and dry was needed. With that done, it was time to break out the DA for a spot of polishing. As the paint is in very good condition (the car was not prepped by the dealership at my request) and with just a couple gentle washes done so far, and after the decontamination, the paint as smooth as a cherubs bottom, a single stage polish is all that’s needed. I decided to try out a new polish and pad combination this time and super impressed with both! Scholl Concepts S40 polish on Scholl Orange Polishing pads. The S40 is an absolute dream to work with, and paired with the recommended orange pad, it’s a match made in polishing heaven. My new favourite! Polishing gear ready Snoopy taped up for business Scholl Concepts S40 Let the polishing commence! Spurring pad between panels Progress checked with swirl spotting torches Polishing complete, time to Panel Wipe whole car to remove any remaining polish residue, as prep for wax Nice clear paint Ready and waiting for next stage - protection Waxing and sealing up next......but not till Friday. Tomorrow (Thurs) is a day off tomorrow as need to use car to go and collect our new rescue cat. So Friday for protection on bodywork, trim and glass. Wheels will get temporary sealant until I’m able to get time to remove them and apply Gyeon Q2 RIM. Roll on Fri!......

    MK8 exhaust

Anyone else had the "gunshots" yet? 😁 I just have the standard exhaust. I was out for a drive with my better half. Nicely up to temp so put it in Race. Tried a couple of manual downshifts - BANG 💥 - they were like rifle shots! Wife and I just grinned at each other 😋 Nothing as loud as this with the 2 MK7's I had.

Had an update today, my car was ordered in week 2 with an unconfirmed BW10, this was then delayed to BW15 and today a further delay. It is now confirmed as BW16. Finally!! Delivery expected mid to late May. Interestingly, I checked the tracker after the dealer called and it was still showing ‘with the factory’, so I deleted it & re-entered my order number, tracker moved to ‘confirmed’. (Thanks to those who have suggested doing this)

    8R Operational Tips and Tricks

Thought I’d pop this in here as discussed in another thread. From swiping down the main menu (swipe down from top to bring up the menu below), you can set up to 4 shortcut/favourite buttons. To do so you simply press and hold the button you want to assign a specific function to and the choices appear below (over 3 pages swipe left to move pages on). Then press and drag the the icon (it will change colour) you want up to the shortcut area and that’s it. This is my shortcut menu atm. And these are the choices it gives you, depending on what options your car has, and what is already set up as the 4 shortcut/favourites which are obviously also choices.

BMW don't do any quality control checks on the indicators, as they're utterly pointless on a BMW - so huge time savings there 😁

After watching that Automann video where he showed the difference in 0-60mph vs 0-100kmh versus different settings in the VBox using the MK8 R...I don't know which time to believe. 8R all the way compared to the new S3. That S3 is just...bleh. Cheap looking grey plastic everywhere, and that horrible rear with fake plastic vents making it look like an A1. Reduced quality interior. Same speed (or slower) than the previous S3. Yet no doubt this one is more expensive than the previous version...for no apparent reason other than being "new".

Mk1 Golf with a R conversion *build thread*

Thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate it, many people on this thread have kept me motivated. In my head the plan is to get it running by sometime in June, not the bodywork just the conversion side of things. June will be 1 year since I started. hoping to have a couple more updates in the next couple of days. Thanks again

    GTI Clubsport

I realise this does not strictly qualify, but after a 7R and a 7.5R I decided to replace with a GTI Clubsport....which arrived today. So if it doesn't qualify please delete. I am very pleased with it. Poverty-spec lease car, no options. It like it a lot. Chassis is definitely better than the Mk7, must be the front track. It turns in well.

    Test Drive 8R

So I got a call from the dealer that I didn't recommend (see thread about dealers to recommend or avoid) to come and test drive the 8R this coming Monday. They mentioned that they can give me the car for a few hours on my own to give it a proper test drive. Anyone else test driven the R to sway their decision either way ? I recently test drove the Clubsport and wasn't that impressed to be honest and the interior was pretty bad. So I don't expect the 8R to be any better in the interior but hopefully it will be a lot better drive. It could be a very expensive Monday

Revo engine mounts - first impressions.

I've only done a couple of journeys since picking the car up last night, now fitted with Revo engine mounts. First impressions: NVH In sport there is some extra vibration, mostly noticeable when I'm stopped. There is also a fair bit more engine noise but it is a natural sound. In drive - just don't bother. It must be where the ECU keeps revs lower when stationary, but the vibrations are horrible - same seems to be true of eco. Whereas with sport you only really feel it through the steering wheel and floor a little bit in drive or eco the seat vibrates too. I guess if you wanted a really crap massage chair it might be for you... Driving Everything feels much much more grounded - the gain in traction is really noticeable, especially on gear changes which feel sharper and definite, I assume as a result of the reduction in movement. Its weird but I can feel how much the engine was moving in the bay before. I was prone to getting some wheel hop when really giving it the beans which seems to have been ironed out considerably. Conclusion Do the mounts make the vehicle less comfortable? - yes, sort of. It is quite a lot louder and not sure I'd want to do too many long motorway journeys in it now, especially as drive/eco are out of the question if you value your fillings. To be honest he vibration/noise in sport I kinda like - makes everything feel a bit more brutal. Do they make it more fun to drive? - imho, definitely, but it would very much depend on your taste. I don't have DCC, but from what I've read about it not sure the DCC crew would want to live with the added NVH. For me its worth it for how much better gear changes are and how it can apply those 390 ish horses through the road surface. Mine is a daily driver but becoming increasingly track focused, however I don't have to worry about kids in the back and my partner is used to driving something that tries to kill you at every corner. Which makes me think...why do I have those rear seats? 😉

Long time lurker here, saying hi. I have an 8r on order, with an apparent bw13 according to cvl, but I can’t seem to get the tracker working. The my vw Uk section keeps asking me to complete registration, only to get stuck on that page, and the dashboard section is asking for a vin as opposed to an order number which I have, am I missing something? anyway spec is; Lapiz, estorils DCC Would have loved a pan roof and reversing cam, the problem with leases I suppose!. Curious to see the advances made with the mk8, having had a manual 3dr 7R a while ago, which I thought was fantastic perhaps missing that last degree of sharpness, always had the feeling the car would be better as a DSG and DCC, boxes ticked this time, though it was a far superior car to the scirocco R that replaced it. Currently in a big boat C8 A6, so looking forward to something more involving!

    Dip stick position in sump

I have tried the vacuum method of removing oil through the dipstick tube mainly to see how much it removed and how much was left in the sump. Note this was not done on my R but on one of my other vehicles and was done just as a test. The amount of oil in the sump should have been 4.5 litres. The amount extracted was 3.5 litres. The issue is not only the old oil left in the sump but more importantly that you leave all the other residues/metal still in the car. Part of the oil change is to get this stuff to come out as well which is why the oil should be warm to ensure good flow.. I still did a proper oil change on the 'test' vehicle because of this residual amount and my advice would be to do it properly and not try the vacuum shortcut.

Tyres make a big difference, though I haven't watched the video so not sure if they're running the same or different. Tyre pressures as well can affect braking. It's also the split of braking power - e.g. how much gets sent to fronts or rears that can affect straight line braking versus braking for cornering / on a track. My guess is the R is setup for the latter. All speculation of course. But given how different the R and S3 are in this generation, I suspect they are not longer identical underneath mechanically / setup wise as they were in the previous generation.

Not being funny but I think it would look awful. You would end up with a car that looks like a GTD/GTI trying to be an R,with exhaust on 1 side and a big gap in diffuser on the other.Just my opinion of course and you can do what you want to your car.

    Sabine Schmitz R.I.P

There's a 30 min Top Gear tribute currently on BBC iPlayer. It features past/present TG presenters from the last 20 years (all excl. Chris Evans). I think it airs on Wednesday evening on BBC 2. It's very much focussed on her time as a guest presenter on TG rather than a biopic type documentary but still worth watching IMO.

    Pets and Petrolheads!

Always a good idea to become acquainted with your new pet before committing to a name, but no harm in developing a prospective list. I did an Internet search of famous one-eyed celebrities, but not sure any of the names are suitable. Didn't know they were partially sightless: James Joyce, Peter Falk, Rex Harrison, Edgar Degas, Sammy Davis Jr (I knew about him - he nearly died in a '50s car accident). Perhaps the best is Thom Yorke of Radiohead (Thom cat?). If these are non-contenders, either Nelson or Rocket are fine choices, or something may come to mind after you complete the adoption.

Let's not get too carried away. 🙂 According to previous Automann figures they measured the Mk7.5 at 12.9s so based on the new Mk8 figure above its 2 seconds faster 😉 However, looking at some other Automann vids the Mk8 is actually faster than a BMW M340i which is surprising given its more powerful, however a lot heavier. Here are a few other 100-200 km/h figures I've put together and the Mk8 is still a little short of most other more powerful machinery. But still puts in a great time for its power output and certainly better than the 7/7.5 M340i - 10.9s Golf R Mk 8 - 10.8s TT RS - 9.3s A45s - 9.1s M2 CS - 8.6s GTS 4.0 - 8.5s E63s - 7.7s Not that any of this matters, these figures are posted for a bit of fun! 🙂

    Golf 8R PP Tyre Pressures?

Interesting how tyre pressures have increased over the last few years I had a mk7 GTD on option 19's/no DCC with tyre pressures at 35psi............It struggled to do 40 mpg I looked at the TP sticker on a Mk7 GTI with DCC at 42F 38R (I think from memory) I set mine to that and hey 50mpg but crashed all over the place 😟 But now 46 psi in the mk8, must be emissions driven

That's really good progress, thanks for the update. The Mk1 GTI is quite a small car, with quite elegant proportions, and any wheels above 14" tend to look a bit silly, and out of proportion. The dilemma is that 14" wheels don't leave much, or any, room for the kind of brakes you're going to need. I haven't investigated, but my guess is that you're not going to be able to put standard R brakes inside 14" wheels. However, you're clearly a very clever and skilful chap, I'm sure that you'll come up with a solution. Inboard brakes?
