    R to C43

2017 Mk7.5 VW Golf R Hatch to 2021 W205 Mercedes-AMG C43 Wagon This may not be of much interest to most but I figured id give my thoughts on moving over to the C43 from the R, my final thoughts of my ownership of the R, and my initial thoughts on the C43 as its replacement. Skip to the bottom for the TL;DR. I tend to over indulge with writing this sort of shit so it’ll probably end up being like a 10-page spread by the time I’m done. Disclaimer: New car goggles may be in effect The R: I’ll start with my final thoughts on the R. I bought it new as a fact

I forgot to say what I bought. kinda of scouted around the question but feel I need some Hail Mary on confession. I have sinned. Badly. Now I want promises you won’t laugh. It’s a, Vauxhall. And it’s a Corsa. And it’s a Electric. I know, I know, You don’t have too tell me.....hang on! stop crying with laughter and let me finish.... I wasn’t wearing my glasses and I saw the V and a jumble of other letters on the dealer showroom and thought it was Volkswagen. Not fooling anyone am I? Ah w

I did very briefly consider it and did look into it a bit more a while back, but ruled it out for a couple reasons. Number one was price. To get one the same price as mine I'd of had to of gone for a 4 year old car and extended warranties aren't cheap on one of those. Once you add in the extra running costs and insurance etc and I just don't think it was all that feasible. Plus you'd need at least a 2019 for the panamericana grille and latest tech. Number two was driving talent. I do not by any means consider myself to be a good or bad driver, but the only RWD car I've

  9. So I've just come back from MRC Banbury, after having the full intake hardware fit treatment, including muffler delete, along with their Custom Stage 1 ECU and TCU remap. I can safely say I'm so impressed with the results. After intake stuff fitted Car sitting waiting to go on the Dyno, it was a fantastic day weather wise. Clear blue skies and sunny, but cold. Good for intake temps. Dyno Results Power wise, from stock run with intake hardware fitted, it made 323ps. After the 2nd dyno run following the remap, it made 395ps. To

  14. Just been down to my local VW dealer to finally have a nosey at an R. Fortunately they had one in the showroom which was a cancelled order. Was white with Estorils so looked good. No test drive though as it was in the showroom. interior looked fine to me and I could live with it had leather also..... however ........ the infortainment system was soooo slow it had virtually stopped! Also pressed the climate button and nothing happened. Pressed it again - several times and still nothing. The salesman repeated a few times that the car “needed a software update”. Why didn’t they do i

  18. I usually buy outright if there is a biggish discount to be had. I brought my 7 brand new with just under £7K off the list price. Mines pretty high spec and it worked out just over £30K all in. Yup I did the PCP thing and paid off 2 days later to keep the discounts and perks. My 7 is 4.5 years old now (66 plate) and after the test drive of the 8. The dealer said they would give me £18.5k part ex. So looking at depreciation that’s about £230 a month which is pretty good going I thinks. No rush to upgrade to the 8 , but if a deal comes along. I would prolly buy

Couldn’t agree more. In my opinion Penguin has been more than patient and isn’t being unreasonable in what he expects. Doesn’t matter how busy a place is Penguin waited his turn to get the work done and should expect the work done and finished correctly. In the rare cases that things do go wrong the garage in question should bend over backwards to make things right. I feel Penguin has listed his genuine issues with the work done and isn’t trying to bash Rtech but probably has opened lots of people’s eyes on what to expect. Hope you get this sorted Penguin and soon[emoji1303] Sent from my iPh

Finally got chance to to watch this. Excellent review. Having driven the m135i on test drive and spending a fair bit of time behind the wheel on the wife’s A35 waiting for my R I agree with pretty much all of this. I do have a soft spot for the merc. It’s a car that makes you want to drive like a hooligan as soon as you start it up. The wife drives it in sport+ all the time now. Rude not to 😂. I did have my first proper play with the R on my way home from work this morning. It is properly quick and the can carry so much more spend through the bends than my 7.5R. It was al

  24. As a few people have and are now placing orders, and as is customary, seems the time is right to start an official mk8 R order thread! So people can share their spec and details of their new R orders. Nice to see who is ordering what, and also to welcome any new members venturing into R ownership with a mk8! Post up your order details in this thread! Colour, spec, date of order, dealership/broker, lease/PCP/outright purchase, location (UK or elsewhere), estimated delivery....etc etc and I’ll add them to the running order list below. Please feel free to chat too in this

Bigger engines with high gearing in top can be surprisingly economical on long motorway runs. I used to get 38-42mpg out of my 750i (so 4.4 twin turbo V8) easily if I kept it to 80mph.

Don’t you just love salesmen! The last one. 😂 Since the software update are OTA it’s easy enough for them just to fire the infotainment system up to let it do its thing. You’d think they’d make sure it had the update. Maybe they don’t know how, lol. Now go and spec one on DTD.😁

Enjoyed reading that mate. Ironically, I was watching more videos on the 340i and C43, albeit, I’m looking at secondhand coupes as no kids. I’ve also looked at mpg and it doesn’t seem too bad and also servicing costs. Expensive if you pay at each service but works out cheaper if you buy a service plan. Aside from the lovely V6 noise that attracted me to it, (sports exhaust is standard on the coupe) the interior, imo, is one of the best out there. The screen isn’t overly large and the clarity, background honeycomb texture and range of options look fantastic on the virtual dashboard. What I also

  31. Looks great Martin, nice beading and lovely metallic flake too. Love beading when it magnifies the flake. 😍 Be interesting to hear how long it lasts on a car without other protection. Either way it’s a great easy application sealant either solo or as an LSP on top of something else.

    Golf 8R test drive :(

Took a picture of the drivers seat this morning, doesn’t look to bad for 25k miles. It looks a bit shiny but that’s just the bright light in the garage, it’s been well looked after so is matt like the steering wheel which I’ve been able to keep almost like new.

  34. Brakes are on. Went with Reyland J hook discs and RBF600 fluid. Standard pads for now as I just wanted to get them on. Quick drive to bed them in. As you'd expect the brakes are really sharp with a nice pedal feel. After the drive though, the discs got hot and made contact with the dust shields, so they will need triming or making them flat.

    Golf 8R test drive :(

There’s always a catch! 😁 I agree Neil, it’s disappointing about the lack of a spacesaver. Although it took VW quite a while they finally managed to work out room from the Dynaudio sub and a spacesaver in the boot (I delayed ordering my mk7 until they had because I wanted the Dynaudio). But no suck luck with the mk8 and cost cutting too. Like Darlo, if the mk7 spacesaver fits (taking into account Mike’s comments about just switching wheels from back to front if it’s a front tyre that goes) I’ll be looking to source one to have just in case. My boot is rarely full so

    Golf 8R test drive :(

On that subject I had a 2015 GTD with 19's (I hated the car, neither a GTI or a 2.0TDI) it didnt have the DCC, tyre pressures were 35 all round and mpg was just 40 on a steady run (which is crap for a diesel) I noticed that with DCC the tyre pressures were 42f 38r (from memory), I tried those and indeed the ride was awful, but the mpg jumped straight to around 42

Yes it’s real dirt trap that linear gap, and as you say a water trap too although an air dryer soon blasts water put of it after washing, or the corner of a drying towel tucked in the gap and pulled along. I think I prefer doing that to having another rubber strip which aren’t the best of VWs and mark easily and fade. Love the Akra, dirty and clean! 😁

I cant figure out if you're trolling or actually being serious here 🤔 Firstly at no point have any contradictions been made nor has anything been exaggerated or fabricated. At no point have stamped my feet and demand the car be fixed now; simply to have some firm commitment that they will get the car booked in and looked at it with a bit more intent than "we'll look at it between jobs". I don't have the luxury of being able to leave my car with them for weeks on end and logistically it's not the most practical thing to do. I don't care if I get an appt in 1 week or 2 months but

    A35 vs A45S

I have been looking at the A35 and A45S. Carwow offer around £35K for A35 and £49K for A45S. I get around £41K for a spec'd up 8R (dcc, pp, lapiz, da) which is pretty steep. Not sure if the A45S comes with the adaptive dampers (dcc), maybe on the A45S Plus (another£7K!). Think I will stick with my 3dr for now.
