  1. The new Golf R certainly needs a horsepower upgrade - a rumored up to 350HP is NOT enough. A seven speed dual-clutch transmission should also be part of the package. Even the Kia ! has a seven speed dual-clutch, although not what it could be.
  2. I rotate my tires every 5,000 miles. It is one way to inspect all of them. In the long run, it will be a money saver since their replacements would be high performance all-seasons which will cost from $800.00 to $1,000.00 for all four.
  3. 21 June 2017 I use Mobil Super+ Synergy 93 octane almost exclusively. In reference to a previous question, yes, you can use a lower octane fuel only on a temporary basis. The engine will automatically adjust to a lower octane, but performance will be lost.
  4. In Rockford, IL, I was quoted that it would be in the neighborhood of $300 plus a cost for coding. You don't suppose the dealer makes a profit on that, do you?
  5. 20 Jun 2016 - I regard drag racing (1/4 mile) as a competition only against myself. In addition to trying to improve my RT (Reaction Time), I just want to be sure that I've done everything necessary to make great runs. Does anyone have advice or hints on how to do my best.
  6. 29 May2017 In the U.S. we have four modes, viz. Comfort, Normal, Race, and Individual. With Individual, I can make choices, but none labeled as dealing with engine sound. Selecting Race would allow a higher rpm and keep the R in gear longer. Much of the sound in any of the modes is artifically created and amplified via the soundaktor. Its sound can be deleted by unpluging it mechanically (about a five minute job) or using a VCDS to reduce or eliminate it electronically. There are several posts on You Tube showing how either can be done.
  7. 31 May 2016 - I live in the U.S. and am considering the Unitronic Stage 1+ (375 HP & 350 LB-TQ) or APR Stage 1 (363 HP & 376 LB-TQ). Both can be installed locally. The Unitronic is done at several VW or Audi dealerships. The APR is also done at several VW or Audi dealerships. Both Unitronic and APR are similar in price. So, have some of your had experience with either of the ECU upgrades?
  8. I am considering a software upgrade for my 2015 VW Golf R and specifically Unitronic and APR. Any thoughts out there?

  9. 05 Sep 2015 My VW Golf R comes well equipped to begin with. I added DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) and Navigation. The six speed dual clutch automatic works extremely well and shifts faster than one can with a manual transmission. I am considering adding the Unitronic Stage 1+ which will increase HP to 375 and torque to 350. That will be installed at VW of Crystal Lake, IL, since they are an authorized dealer.
  10. 08 Aug 2015 Barry - we have owned or leased eleven BMWs including the most recent one, a 2015 BMW X1 xDrive28i. That is my wife's car. I just got a 2015 VW Golf R in Oryx White Pearl. It has a six speed dual clutch transmission (which is faster than a manual transmission) DCC, and navigation. No sunroof since I have never used that on any car. It gets up to 60 mph in under five seconds. I plan to get an APR High Output 2.0 TSI/TFSI Gen3 ECU Upgrade for the MQB Platform. That will increase hp to 360 and torque to 392 - which will be fantastic. It holds the road like a go kart.
