I have made that argument many times, which I did when I got the R, but I've come to realise that sat on the motorway doing 70 mph for ages, it doesn't really matter if I'm in something more mundane. The R doesn't feel particularly special in those situations.
-
People must really thrash their R's or do loads of stop start driving to have such low average mpg. The lowest I have seen is 14mpg and I was blasting it around town in race mode all day, making the exhaust fart at every given opportunity. Maybe I need to do this more to balance out all the miles where I see much higher mpg. My daily commute is 35 miles each way. I do business miles on top and in total around 30k pa. I might be a bit bonkers to do that in an R, but I can see 40mpg on long trips cruising at 70-75, so it doesn't feel that crazy to me. That being said, I have come to the conclusion that doing 30k+ per annuim in an expensive car is silly as the depreciation, servicing, etc is the real killer, not the difference in fueling it over something like a GTD (which I had prior to the R). My mileage is likely to increase in the next couple of years as well, so I plan to buy something like a cheap Skoda octavia 1.6 tdi for the motorway slogs, run it to the ground and service it myself keeping costs low as possible, and then buy something nice for the weekends (maybe another R).

Fuel filler neck, am I going mad?
Charlie808 replied to P-P-P-PirateGolf_ARRR!'s topic in VW Golf R MK7 Chat
Mine looks exactly the same but when I first noticed it the other night at Shell I was certain I'd yanked the fuel filler out too quickly and damaged it. -

Thanks guys. Don't get me wrong I haven't been doing it every day. I hit the redline maybe 10 times a week on average. Which isn't a lot considering I do 25k+ per annum mileage wise. I'm just wondering about the days were I go a bit mad and redline it like 20 times in one day. Is that a bad idea or will it be fine and balanced out by the rest of the time where i'm driving like a granny in eco mode.

Hi guys When I first got my R I was sure it redlined at say 6,500 but now it appears to change up at much closer to 7,000 (dsg btw). I think this only happens when using paddle mode but can anyone confirm where it is supposed to redline/change up? Also, is it bad to redline it often? I'm addicted to flooring it through the gears just to hear the DSG farts There have been a few days when i'm in 'spirited' driving mode where I have maybe redlined it say 15 times. Is this a bad habit or is the car built for it as they say? Cheers.

Cruising just below 60mph most of the way with acc on (stuck behind lorries) only a few roundabouts to separate the A roads so pretty much constant speed for the entire journey. That's my daily commute and to be honest that's the only time I can bear to sit with acc on cruising like I'm in a 1.6 blue motion, but it's fine with me as at least I know I'm getting half decent mpg. Weekend is when it's time for fun round town in race mode means <15mpg lol.

Thanks for the advice guys. If it gets any worse in the next couple weeks I will try my luck with the dealer.

Thanks. It's DSG and I've used the paddles here and there but not loads. Dealer that supplied the car is miles away, if I go to my local dealer will they be any help lol?

Hi all I've had my R for two weeks now and have covered a very enjoyable 1,000 miles. Really loving the car so far. I've noticed the steering wheel developing wrinkles around the 3 o clock and 9 o clock grips. Just wondering if this is normal or if it is going to get really bad. I don't tend to hold the steering wheel there much either, usually hold it at the top or bottom. If it's normal and won't get much worse then I'm not bothered but I'm just a bit concerned that the leather might be wrapped a bit too tightly and that's causing it to wrinkle/crack? Has anyone else experienced this? Will try post some pictures in a minute. Cheers

Hi guys and girls I took delivery of my R a week ago and so far I'm loving it. Only about 500 miles on the clock so I don't think the engine has fully bedded in yet but today on the commute home I got an average of 41mpg. I was taking it easy with only a couple sprints off roundabouts etc and for 90% of the time it was in eco mode using acc, but even so this amazed me. I was hoping for 35 at best so very pleased with this. I know the R is not an eco friendly car and I didn't buy it to try and achieve mega MPG but I love the split personality of the car. Quiet comfortable cruiser one minute, absolute animal the next. I must admit the other day when I was driving around town in race mode it was more like 20mpg. But the fact that I know I can now get circa 40mpg on my commute I'm extremely happy. Anyone else get figures like this or is it just me?

I think MY2014 cars didn't have leather on the door cards and armrest but newer models will.

Still out of stock on ECP. They said they aren't even sure if they are getting any more in. Tempted to buy these from ebay - has anyone got these and if so what's the quality like? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252103877353

Are they covering this under warranty? I had the same problem with leaking coolant in my MK6 GTD. It was a leaking water pump. The car was just outside of warranty period and VW claimed that it was wear & tear so they wouldn't offer any goodwill. I kicked off and questioned whether they would have claimed that had the car still been under warranty a couple of months ealier! Nobody expects a water pump to fail on a car a few years old - they don't recommend cambelt and water pump kit are replaced until 140,000 miles on the particular engine I had in the GTD - so how can they claim it's wear and tear when it fails!! Having read this thread I'm starting to wonder if they are using water pumps which aren't fit for purpose?

This is what convinced me to order an R, the fact that it can be a hugely fun pocket rocket or a reasonably economic car when cruising on the motorway. It sounds perfect.
