  1. Hey Moe,

I am considering purchasing the Aquamist HFS-4 and I see you have some experience with the kit.  My two questions and concerns are as follows, and I hope you can help provide me some answers.

I will be running a cobb accessport with a 93 octane file, AND a custom tune for the water meth setup (more timing, boost, etc..)  Does the HFS-4 have a hard On/OFF setting that will enable me to run the standard 93 tune without interference from the WMI failsafe?

IS the Aquamist Failsafe an independent stand alone feature that is triggered from within the HFS Controller?  Having a proper fialsafe is crucial to me, however right now COBB does not have WMI mapping built in, so any failsafe measures would have to be outside of COBB control.  Thanks!

      Hello mate,

There are jumpers in the control box which you can tweak if you plan to switch the system on/off. The default position means if the system is switched off or out of fluid then it cuts boost to 1bar. Unlinking this jumper means you can switch the system on or off as needed.

Apart from the above failsafe (which can be overridden), the other standard failsafe in the aquamist is based on flow. once calibrated, it means if your flow goes outside of the expected range (too much flow from a leak, or too little flow from a blockage) the failsafe is triggered. again, because you set the parameters, you can max these out and it will never trigger, or set them very tight in which case it might trigger unnecessarily due to a random increase decrease in flow (eg air bubble). You can tweak the delay for failsafe activation, to avoid very short false positives kicking in the failsafe.

You can also hardwire an external sensor into the system (e.g., an EGT sensor, a lamda, a rectal thermometer - literally anything) and set it as an auxiliary failsafe in case there are any other conditions you want to use to trigger failsafe. I haven't done this and i imagine it would need some work in terms of setting up and configuring, but the option is there.

It is honestly the most complete WMI kit on the market, and always has been - it's fiddly and complex, but once dialed in properly it is excellent.

PS- make sure you buy the right version for your car. The one for US spec is different from ROW spec due to the fueling (4 injectors vs 8 injectors).

Hope this helps - good luck!

  2. Gentleman, A follow up review of the Ohlins R&T coilovers. To preface, I live in Philadelphia, PA. I do a mix of highway driving and very suburban B roads. Road quality in my area is quite terrible. My previous suspension set ups prior to Ohlins were MSS Springs adjustable Sport Kit----> VWR springs. The Review: COMFORT I have about 300-400 miles on the ohlins, a mix of 2.5 hour road trips, spirited backroad drives, stop and go traffic and inner city driving. The transformation of the ride quality and handling is sublime. Ride comfort has dramatically improved. The car stays completely composed Over bumps, undulating roads and pot holes. The suspension absorbs the aforementioned with tremendous ease and predictability. Where as the VWR springs would pogo stick over highway undulations, Ohlins feels planted. The only analogy I can think of is a bmx rider going over a pump track, where the wheels absorbs the whoops and maintain perfect contact to the road. My wife, who could not stand either the MSS Or VWR springs commented how much more comfortable the ride was on a 2.5 highway road trip. AT high speeds the ohlins remain rock solid and instill a level of confidence and stability that was lacking in either lowering spring. Performance Handling: Outrageous! MY daily set up on the suspension is 10 clicks on the front, 9 on the rear, and the cornering capability is tremendous. No body roll, perfect tracking. the ohlins transformed the handling capabilities of the R. The dampening quality is something I have not experienced in Other street coils. While very different, this car as it sits outperforms my 997 carrera s. there is something to be said about being able to huck the car into a corner with purpose and know that it will hold the line, regardless of bumps, road undulations etc...Mind you, I have yet to even try the firmest dampener settings. Overall: Get it! I do not miss DCC whatsoever. Worth the price of admission. Better compliance and comfort than OEM and any spring set up, with handling performance that can only be rivaled by harsher riding cup kits.
  3. picking car up friday. Will update accordingly.
  4. I have AWE non res. exhaust mated to apr downpipes. This system has the remote controlled valves, great sound...very angry.
  5. what are the rear spring rates on your kit? did you buy directly from online or did you buy a kit that retrofits a heavier rear spring on. I spoke with Ohlins, they informed me that the 285lb rear spring would be fine for the golf r. They specified to try their set up first, and if need be I can always swap out the rear springs for something stiffer (swift springs, etc.)
  6. Thank you All for the valuable input. I had my shop order the Ohlins yesterday! I will keep you updated in real time with install notes, first impressions, dial in and long term review.
  7. What are your front and rear dampner settings?
  8. Thanks Steve. Are you using stock mounts, or uprated (034 track density?) any issues with squeaking or clunking? How long have you had the online installed? Thanks for the feedback!
  9. I Considered KW, however having to drop out the rear suspension to adjust dampners and horrible customer service has steered me away.
  10. WHY.A.H the GTI kit is compatible with the golf r. plenty of people are running it with great success.
  11. Good afternoon, I am in the market for coilovers for my mk7 golf r. I am coming off of two different sets of lowering springs (vwr & mss) . I am tired of strut related issues and want improved handling. Majority of the reviews I read about bilstein b16 pss10's are very good, however there are some naysayers. While fewer, I have yet to read a negative review of Ohlins. I live in the northeast of the United states. I DD my R and probably do 2-4 trackdays a year. Additionally, I have the following chassis upgrades already: Superpro engine, trans, dogbone mount kit, front/rear sways bar & end links, lfca. O34 subframe insert, Tyrol deadset kit. Thank you in advance for the feedback.
