I looked at the Golf R perhaps since launch and I went from "meh" to "I'll get one". I also evaluated other options: A45 AMG (way too unreliable, even I would've got it with a huge discount), M140i (not a proper M car, not so refined in ride quality, and it would keep me up in the nights because I didn't sell one of my kidneys to get the M2 ), Audi S3 (again big discount if I get it new but I tend to lean towards the reviews that always give the edge to the Golf R in terms of sharpness). Now if I get the Golf R I have couple of options: 1. Get one used. I can find one with low mileage (<30k km) pretty nice options, 3 years old, DSG, 5 doors, DCC for 30k euros. 2. Get the facelifted model. I got a quote from a German dealer with some pretty interesting discount for 39k (DSG, 5 doors, DCC, Active info display and some other options) The question is keep the 9k in my pocket and leave with less pops and crackles from the exhaust, one gear less, 10 hp less and one big display less. What you do? Do you think there will be a noticeable upgrade on the facelifted model (may a bit more oversteer to come closer to the Focus RS)?

So many people believe the S3 is premium hatch and the R's more of a semi premium.. Ok so here's the figures. R list price starts at £30.15k S3 starts at £30.9k (£750 more) If you equip leather on the R comes in at £31.87k The S3 comes with leather as standard... so now the R's now the more expensive hatch by £970. The drive's been said for pretty much every review iv seen its more dull and not as good as the R. So people are basing this (premium) tag just on the 4 circles on the front, yes Audi make more premium cars but in this instance they've got it all wrong. the S3's been dominated by sales and reviews against the R the RS3 will be dominated by the R400 too, although I would guess the R400 will be in limited numbers. I think they should stop making hatch's and worry about the big wafty Rs's and making a new R8 its far too dated now.
