Tyre dressing

achem delivery charges £6.95 for a 1 lit

£7.95 for a 5 lit a bit steep? especially for the 1 lit.

As Neil (WoWo) says, they are predominantly a manufacturer as opposed to a retailer, but it becomes more cost effective if you get the 5ltr sizes.  Even with the slightly higher than average postage cost, the product is worth it IMO. And a little goes a long way so 5ltrs will last for ages, which makes the postage more palatable.

Hi-Shine is solvent-based.

That's right yes, that's what gives it its longevity. There's no sling which means you can apply and then drive straight away.

ive tried loads of dressing but most are water based so you can apply leave ya car in the rain and its look like you haven't done them.

i won't be using any other dressing for what it's worth.

Hi-Shine is solvent-based.

Have you tried it?

Yes, solvent based, containing silicone.  Tech details here http://issuu.com/achemltd/docs/a-chem_tyre_dressing_technical_guide?e=3409042/2191425

Despite the fact it states it can sling, IMO it doesn't sling at all.  The durability and lifespan far outweighs any other tyre dressing I have ever tried.

And to quote Neil, who was the person that introduced me to this dressing.......

...i won't be using any other dressing for what it's worth.

My History of tyre Dressing.

1. Neat petrol applied with paint brush.  Old chauffeurs trick.  Was highly effective when tyres had high rubber content.   Used to do my dads tyres with a jam jar full of petrol.   No recommended.

2. Tyre black.  Disgusting stuff.

3. AG rubber and trim creme.

4.  AG instant tyre dressing

5.  Megs tyre gel

6. Kiwi express black shoe pads

7. Gtechniq T1

8. Gtech T2.

My Preferences - am off shiny overly wet looking tyres.

1. T1 lasts 2-4 weeks with 2 coats applied n dried.  Satin to Matt finish. No fling.  Brush, sponge or pad apply.

2. Megs Endurance. gel.  Instant, effective, no fling so long as left to dry.  A bit too black n shiny for my tastes.

3.  AG instant dressing.  No durability, but you just can spray it over wet tyres and leave for tart's bath, or put two coats on and rub with old MF.  It also sits on top on T1 well and seems to extend that life.

4. T2 not tried mine out yet.  But it's a dressing.

Will look at Hi Shine once AG all gone.

@ Rebecca, as you cleanse on gravel, but others too -

how ow do you reach the bottom round of tyre with product, where it contacts the gritty ground?

Do you:

a. Drive car forward half a wheel rotation, so bottom is top.

b.  Drive car onto something hard and higher to raise tyre.

c.  Nothing, just shove brush as far down as feasible.

i generally do c. Above, but I wash on hard standing.   What I do have in garage, and do on Big Cleans, is place couple of 2foot lengths of scaffold plank that I drive car onto, first front then rear.  These quickly raise tyres enough 2" to get brush/pad all way around.  Easier than ramps.

@Mainframe - option 1.

It's a routine and second nature.  I apply the dressing all the way round as far as I can reach (stop where tyre meets gravel), wipe over with MF (for a satin finish), apply second coat if time permits, wipe over.  Then car is reversed a half rotation, and brush gravel off tyre and repeat application as before on the newly exposed section.  I use a foam pad to apply, or sometimes a tyre applicator or old instant shoe polish applicator.

The plank idea would work but HWMBO (who stoically tolerates all my car OCD) would truly think I'd lost the plot and would be on the phone arranging counselling as I'm driving my car onto the planks.  He'd be thinking that I'm thinking my car is now too precious to touch the ground!    A step too far on the driveway me thinks.

What's the difference between Gtech T1 and T2?

Lol @ counselling.   ...so we can't convince you to install an air bag lift. System under car either? OK.

But,  detailing on hard standing is easier all round than on gravel.   I used to have to do it  on a gravel drive and it was a pita especially with pressure washer doing the wheels, lower body, under arches etc.   a small hard standing area with drainage chez vous, may not be as mad as HWMBO may think.

T1 is a detailing gel, T2 a frequent wash product that is water based.  Not tried mine yet.  I belive that you can combine the 2 )T2 on top).

No the airbag system will not be installed any time soon.

However, in the not too distant future (a year or so maybe), the gravel driveway may be giving way to block paving (or similar) driveway.  Our driveway used to be plain old tarmac and when we had the work done on the house (formerly a bungalow) we had the driveway widened and resurfaced - I confess I'm the one that chose resin- bonded gravel (having used it effectively on many of my work sites and this was before I was massively into detailing).  HWMBO was very opposed to the gravel option, but I won that one!   Well, it's come back to haunt me, lol, as the gravel is no longer bonded mainly down to me jet washing it away through car cleaning and I hate it now.  So when we have some spare cash that will be a future job to replace it.   And this time it will be me pushing for block paving.

T1 looks good and I remember it from photos on your car.  The T2 looks to shiny for my liking.  As for combining both, that would be a no-no.  It's enough having to do the shifting around of the car on the gravel once, never mind twice.   And besides I more than happy with the Hi Shine.   :afro:

  • 1 month later...

I Liked the finish of the Megs endurance gel but it was absolutely no good if you needed to use the car within 2 hours of applying it! Slung like a mofo.

Chemical guys VRP is decent, friendly to the rubber, gives a nice finish which isn't too shiny (for those who don't want too much shine) is easy to apply and can also be used on any other rubber or plastic parts, or vinyl for that matter

I'm going to look into the Hi Shine though, always keen to try new products.
