VW boss confirms gesture control technology for facelifted Golf hatchback, due late next yearVW’s head of powertrain development, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer, has confirmed that the facelifted Volkswagen Golf will feature gesture control technology when it arrives at the end of 2016. This is a first for the family hatchback segment and part of a growing trend for advanced connectivity and control technology making its way into more affordable cars.

 

 

Neußer confirmed the news at CES in Shanghai, where the German manufacturer also rolled out its VW Golf R Touch concept. The gesture control technology that will be used on the facelifted Golf will be borrowed from the concept.

 

“The interior features a preview of future VW interior technologies, with smartphone applications redefined for automotive use,” Neußer told Auto Express. “The gesture control will become reality in the Golf at the end of next year.”

 

 

The new infotainment and gesture control system which will make its way into the Golf is likely to be made up of three digital displays and 5 in-car sensors. A larger 13-inch hi-res colour display will replace the conventional screen housed in the dash of the current Golf. A smaller 8-inch screen will replace the traditional instrument cluster, with gesture control being used to operate the volume settings, temperature controls and sunroof operation instead of traditional controls.

 

 

The cabin will become largely “button-less”, with the functions not able to be operated via gesture control being accessed on the new digital displays which will feature haptic feedback.

I remember when having a telephone in a car was a big deal. Think I saw my first in the late 80s in a bmw. 

 

Gesture control sounds awesome. Although kind of already got it on the head unit as the tabs pop up when you move hands closer. Similar concept just expanded to the whole dash.

Gesture may be ok - touch for everything I can see the downsides as it takes the focus off driving making sure you hit the correct bit etc.

 

Nice to see this tech hitting mainstream cars but could be viewed as a little too much for now - afterall its a car, once your used to the buttons etc is it that hard to use, do we really need a a massive screen on the dash.  I do like the new dash screens - as long as its decent quality and doesnt go wrong.

 

Do away with windscreens, install massive curved tv's and cameras all around and you can drive in a bubble  :grin:

Gesture control on TVs at home is bad enough. A generation of retards walking back and forwards during mobile phone calls, gesticulating as if the other person can see, is enough too.  That same generation making overt swipes and pinches with their iPads in public, is beyond embarrassing to witness.

 

In the car?  No thanks VW :mellow:

plus, SWMBO has habit of driving one handed, whilst talking (a lot) to her passengers and gesturing with her 'spare' hand.   

 

I can just picture her in a golf 8, driving down the road, stereo volume intermittently hi then lo,  windows and sunroof opening and closing, lights dipping and main beaming alternately,  and the ECU blipping between Race and comfort - all every 25 yards whilst simultaneously texting and calling all her contacts.      When all she would in reality be trying to do, is describe a pair of shoes to her passenger!

Think this has the potential to ruin the car if not implemented properly. Doing away with buttons? Please no. Touchscreen's bloody awful to use as it is.

 

The amount of times I miss the song I've actually selecting to play or the menu I'm attempting to select.. touch screen can be a pain in the arse.

Got the T shirt mate :banghead:

It's a pita, but alternatively you can always use the right hand control knob to scroll to the desired song, then press it and it selects the song.

@Rebecca - Oh yeah I use the control knob most of the time, it's just sometimes I convince myself it's quicker not to. Then I realise how wrong I was when I use the touch controls!

 

You are not alone, lol.  It's amazing how badly wrong at quick finger stab at the touchscreen can go!   If gesture control is anything like that, I fear greatly for the future off selecting a song.  :grin:
