David.T
Morning, My clutch is slipping intermittently in 4th and 5th. This is under firm acceleration from say 3000rpm, which I don't consider to be lugging the engine. Software is stock, only mods are milltek cat back and TT intake. I've heard rumours the R clutch is the same as the GTI and so potentially is not man enough for the R, even though I appreciate the torque figures are not dissimilar. I would like to say that I am extremely mechanically sympathetic and I have made clutches last over 100,000 miles so I did not expect this. Has anyone had a similar problem? My concern is that even if VW did honour it under warranty (car is 7 months old and done 6K) that they would only replace with the same weak item and then I'm not really any further forward. Please can anyone offer any advice? Thanks David
thanksabunch
Yes you are indeed correct The clutch is that of the GTI and should never have been put into the R (Lazy Volkswagen) Like you mine is manual and been ok so far although like you ive only covered around 6000 miles so time will tell I've already decided that if/when the stock item starts to go I'll be replacing it with the sachs sintered one which is rated to around 450ftlb torque, still uses the stock fly wheel too so should keep smooth drivability etc Why don't you argue the case with VW to replace it and if they agree just tell them your supplying your own clutch for them to fit and void warranty on clutch afterwards is fine Sparky-R
GrayMK7R
If a clutch is going to slip, it's going to be in the higher gears as the opposing forces are higher (wind resistance). I remember a few guys getting clutch slip on the mk6R with standard software. I would take the mods off and have a go at a warranty claim? Or sieze the opportunity to uprated the clutch and go stage 2 (this suggestion may harm your bank balance) Stobsie
Exonian
I wonder if the GTD has the same clutch? There are loads of tuned GTD's running far higher torque than the petrols put out yet you don't hear many, if any, clutch slip stories there. At times like this we need R400's wisdom around stone age gearboxes. Touching wood as I type, I have a JB1 modified manual R and haven't had clutch slip yet. I did say yet. Strangely when I asked the question about this clutch i was told its not suitable for the ROnly company I've spoke to that can supply the correct Sachs uprated item is a firm called Ecotune (google them) they are also on Facebook, guy there called Andrew was very helpful when I messaged them about it Price was £570 delivered, they have 2 options available from Sachs for the R, one is sintered plate the other is organic plate, both achieving similar results although Andrew recomended the sintered item to me! I plan to uprate mine in near future before heading over to Unicorn developments for a custom map ;-D
David.T
You have no chance of VW replacing your clutch. Sorry but no point others sending you down the river. Manual clutch is known as being weak and you have added more torque/power thus cooking it. I'll ask now did you have a tuning box? You not read the thread about the guy losing his engine and VW said he over-rev'd it. You will be told you rode the clutch and burned it out, Then slapped with a £600-1k bill for the same garbage part. Decent indi get it swapped for an upgrade. I've never had a tuning box or remap, just intake mods. Fair enough about the dealer, I suspect it will be a difficult one under warranty. arthur_mac
Mine was doing something similar, in 5th and 6th, nearer 2000 revs. The revs would blip up a bit then drop before accelerating. They diagnosed a problem with the flywheel. Oddly it happened more when air conditioning was on! The official explanation I got was "we found play in the flywheel". New flywheel and clutch fitted under warranty. Almost 2years old and 16k miles.
alexx
Mine started doing it today (just over a year old and ~ 8500 miles on the clock), in 6th and put my foot down a little, revs counter flew up and gear indicator went from 6 to 5 then 4. Managed to recreate it twice. Called AA out, they reckon it's a worn clutch. Waiting for dealer appointment (leased so not my choice). Pretty standard spec, no mods or tweaks. Wonder how this is going to pan out?
David.T
Interesting to hear that the flywheel could be this issue. I think I'm going to take it to VW and see what they say.
Curryzz
I can relate to my clutch occasionally slipping, clutch isn't man enough. Will more than likely upgrade it, does anyone have link to a Sachs clutch they have actually purchased and fitted?
