Super unleaded vs Regular ??

Recommended Posts

Can the R run well on unleaded or must it be Super Unleaded? Any noticeable difference? Just curious.

Search the forum. Literally 1000s of topics on this question.

Lots of opinion on the matter.

Facts are 98 is the recommended fuel.
95 is the minimum required.

Read around take everything with a pinch of salt and do what suits.
Don't fret over it and enjoy the car.
Far worse things you can do then a tank of 95.

It runs like a dog on normal fuel.

tried 2 tanks and never again, rather pointless getting an R and running it on standard fuel.

preference is Shell V power or Tesco Momentum.

on standard fuel throttle response is terrible and it also has worse mpg.

I tried 1... it just dulls the acceleration.  Not what I'd want to do again.

This is often stated but its actually not true. If you look in the current Golf vii brochure (spec page) you will see that "fuel grade, minimum" is 98 RON for the R. For all other Golfs (including the GTI) it is 95 RON.

It's true according to the filler cap on my car....I think?

I 99.9% run mine on Tesco 99 btw, the price difference is naff all over a tank anyway, but when I have put some regular in (no 99 available) I can honestly say I didn't notice any difference.

I found that it made the throttle response unpredictable even in Sport.

was definitely worse than just deadening it, which would only signify less power.

How can the R be sold in republic of Ireland if that was true?
Nothing but 95 there.

My filler cap definitely has 98 and then 95 in brackets denoting the minimum.

I must be using the Search function incorrectly as I presumed this must have been debated.  I've just filled with Regular 95.........   I'll wait & see what happens.  NOt the extra few pence per litre that bothers me, just curious if it really will be noticeable

You will need a couple of tanks before you can see results.
