I believe it helps prevent limescale buildup

That shouldn’t be a problem if you use distilled water when mixing with coolant to top up (as you should).

Loads of people seem to remove the bag of silicone in case it bursts and buggers up the system.  I’ve never removed one yet.

Agree, you should always use distilled water, but put it in for a service and you never know what they may use …you can probably tell I have little faith in dealers doing what’s right. 🙂

I understand the bag helps to extend coolant life = more environmentally friendly. I would rather change the coolant more frequently and use distilled water as opposed to the bag splitting and dumping the contents in the cooling system and heater matrix. I must admit that the bag appeared to be tough as old boots when I checked it over before chucking it in the bin 😀

True, although my dealership do use distilled water but I agree, you never can be sure.

@Jace how much was the triangle then if you don't mind sharing?

Frustratingly it's one of the things I noticed about my estate when I bought it and thought to myself I'll put a triangle in it that Ii had from a previous car buy typically the one I have doesn't fit. Hopefully something we'll never need anyway but I believe if you travel to France you need one by law.

It was £22.50 from my local VW parts dept, part # is 000.093.055.AA

Yes you'll need one for France as part of your road safety kit.
