I messed my car up with obdeleven

Recommended Posts

Hey

Bit of a problem

I stupidly tinkered with the steering geometry settings by resetting to factory defaults and now :-

hill hold assist

parking assist

Adaptable cruise control

rear parking sensors

front parking sensors

lane assist

Sign recognition

anti slip

No longer works

is there anyone in Worcestershire or Gloucestershire that can sort this for ££.

otherwise I'm going to have to explain myself to the VW garage :(

i know I'm stupid

^^^^ hmm.......... from the report, it looks like your vehicle is in need of a calibration of the steering angle sensor - I reckon!!!

I'm more than happy for you to bring the car down here  (it's not far to Melbourne Australia - just keep driving South and if you get to Tasmania, you have gone too far), but it ain't rocket science to recalibrate the steering angle sensor

I'm writing this from memory, but you could try this (it's best to do the procedure with the engine running):

  1. Fire-up the OBD11 software and connect to the dongle.
  2. Go to the control module list and select Steering Assistant (@ address hex44)
  3. Select Basic Settings
  4. From the options list (see below - yes the screenshot is from old OBD11 software) select Steering angle sensor
  5. Start the basic setting procedure
  6. Turn the steering wheel slowly to the right and then to the left mechanical stop.
  7.  Turn the steering wheel back to the mid position,
  8. Wait for the procedure to show finished
  9. Clear the error message(s) in the control module(s)
  10. When you have successfully completed - pat yourself on the back for a lesson well learned (don't press the factory reset option) and go to the pub for a frosty jug (or 2) !😉

I'm a VCDS man so can't help you with OBDeleven, but as above you will need to do a steering angle sensor calibration.

Once done clear all fault codes in all modules.

Hopefully you won't have to do a front assist (ACC) and lane assist calibration - as that i'm afraid is a trip to the stealers or an alignment shop with the latest hunter gear.

This is the problem with OBDEleven - they have made tweaking ya car nice and user friendly, yet still left the ability to royally F it up amongst the fluffy app options.

VCDS on the other hand looks intimidating and to the uninitiated it feel's like ya walking through a mine field - which is the way it should be, it should never have a fluffy interface, it should be hardcore and scary - so only those who know what they doing dare venture outside a few little tweaks.

With OBDEleven, anything outside some basic harmless tweaks should be tucked away in a separate section which should look nasty and scary and come with a governmental health warning.

Blower: Don't get me wrong - I reckon that VCDS is a very admirable piece-of-kit, but be under no illusion - it's just as easy to select "Factory reset" with any of Uwe's Ross's devices.  The facility is a product of the control module design, it's not a consequence of any particular cable (be it OND11, VCDS, VCP, or any other diagnostic cable)

I have suggested to both manufacturers that a warning message be added to their devices when a user selects "factory reset" - the message would not stop selection of this option, it would just confirm that user actually wants to select the option and it would give a warning of the possible consequences.

Alas, it seems that the voices of others are needed for my suggestion to happen!!

Oh with VCDS it's very easy to annihilate everything and mess ya car up to a far greater degree than OBDEleven.....that's the point i was making, it's hardcore and looks it - you are under no illusion with that 'app' that you should go messing where you don't fully understand what you are doing.

Where as OBDEleven lulls you into a false sense of security with it's nice fluffy interface and it's in-app purchases as if it's some form of game.

Whilst I think it’s great that people push the envelope in these things, after all you don’t know until you try!  I think for the average uninitiated Joe/Josephine user, a little bit of common sense goes a long way - no offence at all to the OP intended.  There’s a lot of excellent info out there on obdeleven (obdeleven pro boards, car forums etc) where there’s both plenty of expert informed coding, and shed loads of tried and tested coding by end users, that if you get that “shit! I’m not sure I should be doing this” feeling when your finger is hovering over an unknown, little tested or untested option, then it’s probably best to listen to that inner feeling, and stop!  😁

OP, I do hope you get it sorted either with help from experts/obdeleven practitioners, or just head down and get VW to sort it so you can get back to driving your car.
