I think the Golf driver wasn't playing. I left one of those Abarth's for dead in my R26 Megane, and my 7.5r would leave that for dust.

I'm not so sure, a remapped Abarth is pretty rapid,  weighs around 1000kgs, mine made 182bhp and around 240lbs from memory,  that puts it very close to the golf in terms of power to weight.

I'm very sure and I think your numbers are off there fellah.

Your "remapped" Abarth at 182BHP per tonne versus a standard Golf R (circa 300 depending on model) at 1,350 KG's = 222 BHP per tonne.

As a fair comparison - a Golf R with any form of tune is going to be a minimum of 350BHP = 260 per tonne .

Standard cars

O-60 Abarth 6.6 seconds

0-60 Golf 4.6 seconds

1/4 mile Abarth 15.1 seconds

1/4 mile Golf R 13.1 seconds

Most "performance" cars can give the perception that it can keep up with another "performance" car on a public road given the limited scope and distance for maximum acceleration. But don't fool yourself into thinking that the performance of the above two is close in pure performance terms though.

I've done many road trips with groups of high-performance cars and they can all keep up with each other on the road and over long distances. But when the crunch comes and they get on track or a really open unrestricted road the men are sorted out from the boys.

Is a Golf R 1350kg??? I would have thought nearer 1500kg?

And forget 0-60, we are taking rolling from around 20mph onward. I'm telling you,  20-100, there is little in it if the golf is stock.

Anyone in the Kent area willing to give it a try , I'm well up for it

You are probably right, once rolling you need a lot more power to pull away convincingly over a short pull.

I once had a couple of pulls against a ferrari 458 in an M3 CSL from about 20-65 and the 458 was obviously quicker but it wasn't total annihilation because there's simply isn't enough time for the quicker car to pull away in a few seconds of full throttle

I think a stock R would still pull away from a tuned 500. Sorry, totally different class of car. They are cool little cars but it's not serious performance car. It's a warm hatch at best.

I totally disagree . A mapped Abarth is a total weapon on a B road !

Trust me. I own a 2018 Golf R , tuned to over 420bhp by VRS,  on a B road , I'd say there is little in it between that and my Abarth.

Just reading this as a comparison. An older Fiesta ST 1.6:

https://www.evo.co.uk/ford/fiesta-st/14300/ford-fiesta-st-hot-hatch-group-test

Power: 179bhp

Weight: 1088kg

0-62: 6.9s

Doesn't seem overly fast for the same power and weight?

And reading some more on the group test:

https://www.evo.co.uk/renault/clio/14302/ford-fiesta-st-v-peugeot-208-gti-v-nissan-juke-nismo-v-mini-cooper-s-jcw-v

Again showing off its perfect power-to-traction balance, the Fiesta was the fastest in the initial sprint to 30mph at 2.59sec, just pipping the Pug (2.61sec). But the Ford’s power deficit told as the speeds increased and it was the second slowest to 60mph (7.38sec) and 100mph (18.35sec),

0-100mph in 18 secs is pretty abysmal!!! Would need a good 80 - 100bhp or so more to get anywhere near a Golf R. @blower got 10.58 secs to 100mph in his stock Golf R.

I have had a rolling pull up against a crazy 260hp polo....it was neck and neck for a while, but i started to pull away towards the end.

Up against a light car such as a polo or fiat - that is the sort of power they will need to be putting down to ever have a chance of keeping up with an R.

The Polo is a lot heavier than the Fiat,  so not really true.

The Polo Gti is also a bit of a weapon,  I gave my old one to my son which was also running 260ish (stage 2) and it had no problem staying with a golf R, even matched a bloody Ferrari 355 which was hilarious!

I do have a soft spot for the polo gti with the EA888 engine

Yeah normal polo is about 1200kg vs fiat at 1000kg......the one i was up against was an older stripped down one (no back seats) so weight i expect was closer to the fiat.

Headline BHP figures are not the be all and end all tho, a lot of these tuned smaller engines have a great top BHP figure but you really have to wring their necks to get the power out. Where as with the R it's a mass of torque that comes on early and stays there right through the rev range.
