dopper99
This colour doesn’t do it any favours. I think the front looks bloody awful but maybe it will grow on me, one day.
BobbyT
Looks very nice inside, not sold on the headlight design but it might grow on me.

Yeah, agree, I’m liking the interior quite a lot. I like the clean sweep into the active dash area. The digital dash looks a significant improvement on the 7.5. And the HUD much better placed for viewing whilst on the move, but the lack of physical buttons for key functions isn't something I like at all. I actually do like the look of the DSG switch and essentially that’s what the DSG lever in the Mk7/7.5 amounts to anyway albeit still a throwback to traditional manual gear stick. For those of us than use paddles for manual DSG shifting then it’s neither here nor there really, but I would miss the satisfying nudge from D to S with the current dsg stick, but expect its just a case of adjusting to a different action. Some of the exterior is very questionable but I think it’s going to be a grower. I’ve never been keen on geometric integral/inset exhausts and hate the ones on the standard mk8 model and on some current Golfs, but if the performance ones are more like the GTE then that’s the better of a bad choice, if we can’t have round or oval tailpipes. Atm I feel that this is probably going to be a grower.
delboy01
Can’t say I’m that impressed. I really thought the technology was going to be out of this world. They clearly don’t want you to use the DSG selector as it’s so small. Another thing to have to look down at to see. I use mine to quickly put the car in sport and then take it out of sport when not needed. The whole area where the cup holder is looks quite cheap. I don’t think it even had a sliding cover anymore. This will not worry the A class Mercedes.
dopper99
For me the deal make/breaker would not only be the looks but how well it drove. If the Mk8 Golf R had a reasonable power hike and drove really, really well then it could be something I could consider in a few years. But ..... the 7 and 7.5 drive so well anyway, how can this be significantly improved on (purely driving dynamics)? Can a newer Golf R be that much better (other than a power hike)? If its not broke then dont fix it .............. therefore I dont see much of a compelling reason to rush out and buy a Mk8.

postie
Apart from the new look being pretty underwhelming VW lost me when stopped 3 door option.

I rarely use the shifter to change gear, but "hold" + paddles works for me, especially on hilly roads.

JonSW
Thanks for that video Rebecca. I smirked when he said what it was like to use the DSG 'bean' ... When I see photos of the front end, I feel as sad as it looks. However, in videos, it doesn't look so bad so I'm sure we'll get used to it. The rear will look better for 5 minutes spent with a hairdryer and dental floss. I don't buy a car for what it looks like so, as long as it's not gopping, I'm OK with it. The interior is a real step up with a few caveats: My 7.5 screens don't dim down enough for me at night. I sometimes turn the info screen to 'Car' as it's almost black and leave the TomTom showing on just my iphone propped in the cubby, rather than on CarPlay. So, I wonder if the 8 will be even brighter ... I don't like the lack of a tactile shifter although it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me as the VW/Audi shifters work in the wrong sense (i.e. not like racing cars or BMWs, which I drove for years with the 'forward for down' mechanism). I have to use only paddles anyway. Great that the 'emergency' AC controls like max screen demist are on buttons, albeit with the lights, but I feel not having a knobs 'n' buttons climate panel is a mistake. Interesting that 48V mild hybrid is more potential trouble than it's worth. Overall, I feel I'd probably be OK with Mk8 R Estate if I didn't already have a 7.5. As it is, well, not bothered and don't care how long till it's released.
DaveGrohl
That middle screen really doesn't look great once you've seen it from the different angles as in the above vid. The disappearance of buttons and knobs is just mental. The designers seem to be delighted with themselves at designing what is basically a glorified app store on wheels. The fact that the car will be frustrating to use in daily life as a result of this touchscreen nonsense seems to have completely escaped them. I despair at these designers. There is nothing about that car that I see as an improvement on the mk7. I will be moving away from VW when the time comes to change my mk7, unless there is an ID model that floats my boat. BobbyT
I'm looking forward to seeing one in the flesh. At the moment I just can't fall in love with the front end, the rear is ok. GTI trim may add a little something to the mix...... Booth11
