Buckling Pretorias?

Recommended Posts

A friend's looking for a used R with Pretorias.  He's spoken to a VW sales guy specialising in Rs and GTIs who said Prets had "a tendency to buckle".

Anyone have knowledge or experience of this, whether due to potholes etc. or otherwise?

This was the main reason I didn't go for them. It's a shame because they suit the golf really well.

IMO they are fab to look at. Lovely. But very dear to replace.
some rate replicas - at a fraction of the price. There are endless aftermarket ways to personalise your R to taste. Or Pretorias if you must too. 😂

There are few Mingers for me.

A quick search on ‘buckled’ using the forum search facility and you’ll see quite a few discussion threads relating to buckled Pretorias. Forum members over on golfgtiforum.co.uk have also experienced buckled Prets.

The tendency for oem Prets to buckle on impact with potholes and very poor roads, is a well known issue amongst some enthusiast R owners. Often referred to as “butter like” Prets!  There’s lots of posts about it on here.  I’ve had only one of mine slightly go out of round (in 4 and a bit years) though, but there’s others that have had worse.  If they are not badly deformed then a good wheel refurbisher can sort buckles, but to replace with oem is very costly and why some opt for replicas or go other aftermarket instead.  But yes, Prets are known for a tendency to buckle under some circumstances, so your VW sales guy is quite right in what he’s telling you.

I had prets on my first R for 3 years with no issues. Got them on my new one as well and no issues.

Any alloy where there are big gaps between the spokes and on low profile tyres are liable to buckle if they take a hit in the wrong place. Under inflated tyres do not help.

I don’t think they’re that bad. Had mine almost 2 years and no issues. Car was 3 years old when I bought it. Hit a few potholes and they have been fine

What Raiden said...Had mine for 15 months...hit a few pot holes too.....bumps in the road cracks...etc....most at speed....No issues with Prets buckling whatsoever....NZ Roads though if that makes a difference which some do.......but loving the Prets.....(I'm on 19's with DCC)....Best wheel for the R IMO....:afro:
