Wheel & Tyre Storage Solutions, best options?

Recommended Posts

Any Advice you can give is most welcome please.  I’ve just purchased a set of Winter Wheels and tyres, so the Pretorias will be rested over the winter depths.  I’m looking for help with the best way to store wheels / tyres x 4.  What do other Owners do here please

A floor or wall mounted rack?

A vertical un/ wheeled pole type rack, - are these sufficiently safe, stable in use?  I have an image of a Pret damaged DPB R upon opening the garage door.

A bag or cover?

As with many others, space is an issue - garage is technically “double”  ( from an era when 2 cars were a Ford Escort Mk3.5 and a Fiesta XR2) but now houses the whole plethora of home & household kit, Fridge freezer, Wine, beer, dog stuff etc.

I thought of “Tyre hotel storage”  but nowhere wants to know if you have bought wheels elsewhere.

What do other owners do and what works well/best. Everything welcome, except advice for me  to better plan ahead😂

Thanks in advance.

Last time I had some to store, I put a piece of cardboard in the corner of the garage and carefully piled them on top of each other. Works perfectly. It's especially space efficient if you top with more cardboard and store something light on top of them. I believe it's regarded as better for them to be stored flat.

Not sure if you have the room for this but I can't think of a way that takes up less space.

I always store wheels flat with card in-between as above, no issues at all.

Thanks. Good to know.  As I ve aged, there is lots more kit in the garage specifically for me - out door Power Wheelchair, power wheelchair wheels, chargers, spare wheelchairs  - the garage  looks like a bl**dy Diasability Trade Exhibition.😂😂

And along with this, the Need for Stuff to be located within My easy reach and still take my R (does not stand outsider) with room for me to get in/out of it from my wheelchair.  Just as well I have a Lovely Wife I guess. Haha.

I store my original factory wheels on a vertical stand, which has a cross shaped base for stability. I’ve got each wheel in a VW wheel storage bag, and each bagged wheel sits on a support that’s slotted onto the vertical pole part of the stand. The supports are positioned so when the wheels are on the stand they don’t make contact with any of the other wheels above or below. I then have a cover that fits over the entire stand + wheels to keep them dirt / dust free.

It stands in one of the front corners of my garage and is very stable.

Neil this is how they are stored at the moment bud and they have 5mm foam between them horizontally stacked  as they are rim and tyre.

The foam I’ve included in the packaging for you 👍

My daughters winter tyres off the rim I store in a home made tyre rack off the ground.

find a corner and stack is perfect for your new rims and tyres bud 👍

a cool dark spot and a gentle soapy wash and rinse before storage is all they need. As recommended by My local Porsche dealers.

I can remember NeilP had 4 wall mounted brackets fitted in his garage where he hung each wheel separately along the length of the wall.

I just store mine on top of each other with cardboard between them but will go wall mounted next year to save space

Brill Jon. Cheers.
I remember @SpursMadDave informing a query about the lovely Cades Berne black & silver wheels (I need to get out more)  Have exchanged a couple of p.m. with Dave.  Good guy. Miss the fun & jokes. Well Jon if you’re ever passing thru  by me - say a trip to Scotland. you’d be most welcome to stop for refreshments. 👍
