Soundaktor - what level is yours at?

If you just chose the quiet setting for the exhaust,
doesn’t it just minimize the artificial drone ?
do you have to code it off ?
(In pre-8 cars, I know the 8 has Pure mode)

Agree. Worst offender is Audi and their diesel S4 and S6. In an Automann video he showed the little sound generator/speaker outside the car just underneath the - equally fake - tailpipes.

At the minute its at full OEM,  but next week when I have an anti-drone res-delete fitted I'm going to turn it down, possibly off altogether 

Otherwise being a wagon it will be like driving inside a bandpass sub enclosure 😣

It is still way better than anything done through the speaker … as it is actual vibrations going through the body, and not sound only, so it actually “feels” more real, if done gently and just right (like in my S3, IMHO).

So, I just turned it off yesterday.
and I must admit I kind of miss it.

Upside is I can now appreciate
what my car actually sounds like
Downside is there are some sounds
I would rather not hear :-)

I think I’ll turn it back to 50% and try that

So, I tried to turn it back on yesterday, as my car is really quiet without it, but while the OBD11 interface seem to show the module accepted the change, I can’t hear it when driving (tried intentionally), so I know it didn’t came back.

 

I also tried to do an output test (set to 5sec and ON), but upon swiping it didn’t do anything, the slider turned red saying it cant be performed (or something to that effect).

I tried the “key on/off reset” but the output test still doesn’t work (haven’t driven it since).

 

Any advice ?

 

No work was done on the car

Should do. I output tested mine using obdeleven before setting to 0%. The output test defo worked. Golf R my2016. Do any faults show on ze borne structure soundaktor thingy module?

Haven’t checked output pre-change

Would be interesting if you did an output test while at 0% and see if it still works or says “unavailable”.

Yours is pre-facelift (DQ250 DSG6), right ?

Yes. It is dq250 pre fl. Pretty sure I've done a output test at 0%. But will retest over weekend.

Ignition on..engine not running. Soundaktor adaption at 0%. Output test still works and rattles all my dash. Including the clip I think I lost in the hvac ducts when I fitted the 8" screen and surround!!!

It is very weird if this is a hardware issue, as nothing changes except coding and it was fine before (car is 4yo) and also I’m not sure I want to start messing around with it (not sure it’s worth the effort).

So, if you have any tips or advice on checks and resets that I can perform, I’d love to try anything that doesn’t involve a wrench.

I’m a year+ out of warranty
Can try and ask for GW from them
but not sure where they’ll stand

It sounds like the actual unit has failed or wiring. But in both cases I would of thought a decent chance of a fault code.

 

You won't need a spanner but very nimble fingers.  some long nose pliers to remove the 3 x clips in the black cover between bonnet and windscreen as well. 

 

Once you remove / check plug. I guess you could test the pins for voltage. Or remove the soundaktor and test with a 12v supply.  It is tight in there and apparently easier with the horn wiring unplugged. 

 

Is there a basic settings for the module try that.

 

Can you try changing any one item in long coding and then reverting it back. Any difference.

After 18 months of owning my R I’ve finally found a VW specialist who can turn soundaktor volume down to zero. Sorry if you have OBD11/VCDS, but I wanted a specialist to do it 🙂

 

So the question is this:

 

In Individual mode, if I set the engine noise to Race (after I’ve had the volume turned down), will the exhaust valves still open?

 

Currently true Race mode turns up the soundaktor and opens all exhausts.

 

The same seems to happen in Individual with engine set to Normal, but sound set to Race.

 

So if the volume is zero, and in Individual I have the engine at Normal and sound at Race, will the exhaust remain louder? I think it will, but thought I’d ask the group.

 

Im hoping that zero soundaktor will still keep valves open.

 

The soundaktor is probably the biggest thing stopping me from loving the R as much as you all do.

Turning the soundaktor to zero does just that, nothing else. The same as disconnecting it.

Tweaked mine through VCDS two years ago and never for one minute considered switching back on again.

Hiya, my soundcraptor is now turned off and I’m so glad, especially as the valve setup is untouched.

 

I drove from London to Cornwall with them all open and the car was so much better to drive.

 

I still don’t love the car - after 18 months, I doubt I ever will now.

 

But it’s a better experience now that pathetic fakery is banished.

 

GTI Clubsport looms in a few months, I hope!
