8R Operational Tips and Tricks

Recommended Posts

Another sticky thread, this time for posting operational Tips and hints for the 8R.

To start a quick one from me which may be useful to new owners.  I had a play around with various things on getting the car, as there's several ways to achieve and access various things it's good to find the quickest methods - two key ones for me are:

Deactivate Stop/Start - The quickest way to deactivate the Stop/Start system (until coding can permanently disable it) is (after ignition on, and infotainment loaded) - swipe down the screen of the infotainment unit from the top where the short grey central bar appears - this can be done in any view screen - and this will bring down your profile screen and one of the default icons (first left) is the Stop Start icon.  Tap on it to deactivate.  You do have to do this every trip though.  Roll on coding to disable!

Stop/Start - you either love it or hate it!  I'm in the latter camp.  So disabling it is one of the first things to be done each trip.

Disable Lane Assist - There is a very quick way to disable the feature - After ignition on - simply press the button on the end of the indicator stalk and on the centre of the dash display you'll see the assist menu and the Lane Assist. To disable press Ok button on the right side steering wheel control buttons, and the Lane Assist will be unticked and off for the duration of the journey.

Lane Assist is on by default and whilst it may have some value, it becomes intrusive when driving along road with parked cars or areas where you need to cross the central road line to accommodate other things, so I personally have found it useful to disable the feature each trip, or when I don't want it on.

Isn't tapping your phone screen while driving illegal? Not much difference there.

I was teasing camel.  🙂

Yes and agreed, but if you set up certain things up the car prior to setting off on your journey, then minimal tapping is required. And there are the haptic steering wheel buttons, infotainment buttons and slider controls for things you might want to change on the move (music tracks, climate etc) so not much difference to pressing a traditional button really.  And the 7/7.5 has plenty of touchscreen activity so not much difference there either.

Yes, like it or not, this is the future. And the new ID.x cars will be worse. At least until some serious accidents change a few minds.

It will be interesting to see if/when/how well OBDeleven and VCDS get around SFD to offer the coding we have been used to, so we can fix some of the idiocies inflicted by the non-car driving teenage gamers that VW seem to use as system programmers.

Yes it is the way it is, like it or loathe it.  Fair points and time will tell how it impacts safety.  I think the point to make is, to set up as much as you can prior to driving off so the risk is minimised.  It’s early days but as someone who has spent 300 miles in a new mk8 using the tech for the last week, I’ll be honest and say I don’t find it any more of a hindrance or distraction than the previous system (and I’m finding the touchscreen much more responsive) with one big exception, that being the lack of a physical climate fan control dial.  That is what I miss of the old system the most so far.  The so rest of it, so far I’m finding perfectly useable at no detriment to driving safety.  Others may feel differently.

I am hoping that there will be some VCDS/OBDeleven et al coding abilities, to permanently disable some features.  Not because they are hard to disable via the tech, but just because the are best switched off rather than on (IMO) and having to do so off every trip is annoying (as it was with certain driver aids on the mk7).

It appears that with Standard Nav on Golfs with hardware system ending with D (and my software version is 1788), you can get the map to display on the dash screen as well as the infotainment screen (dual map display).

Please note this is for VW in-built nav only, not nav through App-connect CarPlay, such as Maps and Google Maps.

To enable it (and you need to do this every usage) you need to do the following:

  • Using the View button on right hand steering wheel controls tap unti you reach the map view screen - Dash map view screen below

  • Tap Nav on infotainment main menu

  • Tap map icon far left
  • Tap page icon bottom right

  • Toggle ‘Show map in cluster’ button to on

  • Map will now show on dash screen

Limited use to me as I use Google maps via CarPlay so that only displays on the infotainment unit but I actually prefer to just have it on that screen.  But for those that do want it with the VW nav, it’s available on standard nav.

I thought that it goes back to keyless after the next unlock? Or maybe I’m thinking of another car.
