Golf Mk8 R - Turn off heated steering wheel permanently CODING

Recommended Posts

The standard heated steering wheel of the mk8 R is a point of debate, largely because some find that the button on the steering wheel which switches it on/off and adjusts temp setting (3 preset levels), can be accidentally knocked causing the heated steering wheel to come on at unwanted times.  I myself don’t have that issue knocking the button but some owners do.

Though the heated steering wheel can be set (in the Air conditioning settings menu) to come on automatically  depending on the outside temperature, there is no option to disable or turn it off completely via the infotainment system.

So as it’s been the topic of a recent thread, I decided to have a browse using obdeleven to see if it can be permanently turned off.

And report that YES, it can be disabled with obdeleven.

Here’s how:

RELEASE THE BONNET RELEASE CATCH FIRST (otherwise the coding will not work)

And then as follows:

Launch obdeleven

Default is “Installed”

Change to “Not installed”

Coding accepted

After coding accepted, I started the ignition and tested the heated steering wheel on/off button on the right hand steering wheel control panel.  Confirm that the button has no effect at all.  It does not switch on the heated steering wheel - no icon appears on the dash.

I then went into Air conditioning menu then Settings (top right of A/C screen) to see if the heated steering wheel option was present as it usually is - see pic

After coding to ‘Not installed’, the heated steering wheel option has disappeared from the menu - see pic

As I personally love the heated steering wheel, and don’t have a problem knocking the heated steering wheel on/off button,  I don’t want it disabled so I reverted the coding and selected “Installed” again and confirm that the heated steering wheel button works again and the feature has reappeared in the A/C Settings menu - see pic

Good find Becs 👍  ... keep them coming 🙂.

Not a mod I'll be doing as, like you, I rather fancy having it Winter and I've not had any accidental switch-ons at all so far.  I do have the full Winter Pack too so need to check my Auto setting - do you know what the default temp is for coming on automatically ?

I'm wanting the "chirp" enabled on locking the car mod if possible (as the R-Line disappointingly doesn't come with folding mirrors).   I'll have to do a search for that based on previous MK 7/7.5 coding.   I've got so used to hearing and seeing the folding mirrors on my last three cars that I need a bit more confirmation that it's locked.

Jonny I had a quick look at the chirp on locking/unlocking using the 7/7.5 obdeleven method as guide, and no joy.  With the 7/7.5 method you go into 09 Central Electrics enter Security access code (before going into Adaptation) but with the mk8 it won’t accept any of the usual security codes. However you can just go directly into Adaptation but the subheadings that the 7/7.5 method uses to enable the steering in the menu and the one to activate it don’t appear in the Adaptation menu.  I also went into Long coding too out of interest but that fails to load any coding.  I didn’t delve any further.

I have seen a video of a mk8 (annoyingly without any coding info) using horn sound on lock/unlock but too loud for my liking.

Needs more research.

Could be US-spec, most US cars chirp on remote opening/closing.

Maybe, but was possible on the 7/7.5 on UK/Euro cars with coding and/or one touch obdeleven app.

That’s why I’d not want horn sound on lock/unlock.

Horn sound from 1:13s

Chirp sound is much less intrusive.

This is the Mk 7 chirp that we could code - go 1'48" to hear it 👍  sounded even quieter outside in the open as I think the cars in a quiet enclosed area in the video.

@Wrex: Try this-

Central Electrics
Security Code: 31347
Adaptation channel:
Außenlicht_Front-Tagfahrlicht-Dauerfahrlicht aktiviert zusaetzlich Standlicht
Set to active

I tried this - but got an error when I tried this security code. Didn't see that adaptation channel as an option either, I could well be doing it wrong tho..

I did see this on the obdeleven forum;

1 - Module 09 - Electronic control unit
2 - Adaptation
3 – Daytime running light
4 - Tagfahrlicht-Dauerfahrlicht aktiviert zusaetzlich Standlicht: - (Change value to Active)

..but again - when prompted for a security code on saving - it wouldn't accept 31347.. I assume this is all due to VW's protection?

Not for this particular tweak, but I tried 31347 yesterday for the alarm chirp tweak and it would not accept that code. I tried a couple others too by still no.

SFD protection I was assuming?
