I'm wondering . . . if I sold this car for, say, £30,000 would the new owner still pay the £570 tax disc?  Or if I sold this car to my wife for £1.

Sell it and claim to get a refund of bulk of the remaining tax paid.

New Owner has to Tax it.  At £570 rate. Applies for 5 years.
Not like the old days of the Tax Disc on the near side windscreen.  But you don’t need to queue at the apost Office anymore😂 Such is progress.

Gov make a lot of money from this change.

You only get a refund from the end of the current month, but new owner has to pay from start of current month

Multiply the double month payment by how many cars change hands each year and it’s a lot of ££££s

That’s a hell of a jump on top of an already crazy amount.  Clobbered for the lot and roads aren’t fit to drive on.

I ground my teeth all the more when I went online to renew.

So I've stolen about seventy pounds of road signs and traffic cones to get my money's worth :)

April 2022, Mk 8 R Performance, Lapiz Blue,  DCC, Winter Pack, Rear view camera
Gone: 2019, Mk 7.5 GTI Performance, 5 door, Manual, Indium Grey

Gone: 2015 Mk 7 GTI, 5 door, Manual, Carbon Grey

You only need to keep it a couple more years Becs then the road tax will come down. 🙂

Never say never Andy. That said I do have one eye on an 8.5 at some point, unless the pricing is so ridiculous that it’s not viable, so probably just replace one high tax car for another.  Sucker for punishment!  😂
