Coding Traffic Sign Recognition (if you don’t have it) a.k.a Dynamic Road Sign Display

Notice:
We don’t have NAV in our cars, so this post shows how to turn on Traffic sign Recognition in “detection” only mode
using only the LaneAssist camera

And finally,

Once you do that, a ping will be heard
and a message will show on the dashboard:

Do not worry, this is ok.
It goes away and no fault code is showing.

Addendum

We don’t have NAV in our cars, so this shows how to turn on Traffic sign Recognition in “detection” only mode
using only the LaneAssist camera

If you have NAV in the car you may want to use fusion instead of detection in the first step (above) and also enable displaying the VZA function to show speed on the NAV screen (see below)

I did not try this last part (VZA) as we have no NAV.
You can update here if you try and it works (or not).

This is how it looks in different screen layout

- on the analog cockpit of the S3 8V FL

Also, be aware that if you don’t have NAV (like me) and you turn on traffic sign recognition, you may get a message every time you drive someplace with no traffic signs for a while, or a few minutes after start up, letting you know that it doesn’t have a recent value for speed limit (can happen also in poor weather).

Now all that is left to do is set the warning

- In my S3 it only flashes and makes no sound,
and allows me to chose off or 5,10,15 kph
over speed limit as threshold for the warning

- In the Tiguan it allows to chose
warning type Visual/Acoustic

7a986327672e2e1a496135fdd8c7ab4f.jpg

and a threshold between 0-20 kph above limit

Module 13 - ACC
Long Coding

Note:

I’m not sure what this step actually changes
or if it is actually vital for it all to work properly

I hoped it would enable to set ACC threshold
to be speed limit + 15kph, which is great,
but it doesn’t seem to affect the ACC so far
(maybe in speed limiter mode, instead of ACC,
But I love ACC so wouldn’t give up on it).
Perhaps I need to code TravelAssist for it to work.

If you know something about it, please post here.
I don’t mind going deeper into this rabbit hole,
and hopeful it will help R owners w/o road signs display.

I've been trying to get this to work on a pre-facelift (2016) R. Still a no go... I'm in Canada, speed signs are in black and white.

I followed the instructions down to a T, but I'm still getting "No road signs available" in my dash. Am I missing anything??

Module: 5F (Information electronics)
Adaptation → Channel: Car Function List BAP Gen2 - traffic sign recognition 0x21 → active

Adaptation → Channel: Car Function Adaptations Gen2 - menu display road sign identification over threshold high → active
Coding → Long Coding → Byte: 24 → Bit: 6 → active (was already on)

Module: A5 (Front Sensors Driver Assistance System)
Security Access → Code: 20103

Reboot infotainment unit by pressing and holding volume knob for 10 seconds.

I didn’t do all of those things (see above)

also did not reboot in neither cars
Just got out and locked the car
Then opened and restarted

It says “no road sign” every time we drive
until it “sees” a speed sign and recognizes it
No idea why it wouldn’t show your signs
Video on YT say it can show US signs (similar, no ?)

Did you go into the dash/info menus to turn it on ?
You chose “extended” that would mean the control is on the menu on your extended dashboard, so you can choose it there (I think in digital dashboard you chose through the touchscreen).

Apparently, at least in my car, these two are not necessary (haven’t had time to try it in the Tiguan yet).
I turned them back to how they were, and everything still works the same (I don’t think I have the ACC SW that can control it with sign recog.). Not very good, mind you. It notes every sign it sees, even if it isn’t for the lane you are in, and it misses signs from time to time. So I find it cool for construction areas where they temporarily drop the limit and Waze doesn’t know about it.

I was gearing up to give this a go today and wanting to do some swotting up on the 'How To' above and ...
... before I've even plugged the OBDEleven in, I realise that I've been a bit of a plonker.

In the rush of buying the car and wanting to be prepared, I skim read this thread (and a few others) and bought an OBDEleven dongle with the aim of enabling a few features on my R that I've missed from past cars...

However, by skim reading, I'd missed some crucial info - that this functionality is tied to the LaneAssist camera (which I don't have) 😞

If you have a 8R you probably do have lane assist

as I believe it comes standard WW

you may not have side assist, tough, as it is optional in EU

(letting you know if someone is coming from the back, left or right)

If you have an older car, it is easy to see if you have a camera, looking at the mirror base from the outside through the glass (see pic below, there is a triangular space between the glass and the base of the mirror, it is you can see the camera).

The basic version of HBA (non matrix, just high or low) use a sensor on the back of the mirror, so HBA does not necessarily mean you have a camera.
