Yes there are a lot of R's but only a handful with decent spec. Those will fetch a premium. If you got a 7.5 with akra, manual gearbox and a 3 door. Probably less than 50. Go on howmanyleft.co.uk and it shows numbers of different golf R variants.

I suspect that in 20 years time IF R's become collectable then condition & provenance will affect prices more than options & spec, with some exceptions (eg 3 doors, manuals, truly rare colours).  Often sellers try to increase the price of a car by claiming rarity for a particular combination of options/spec, but you need at least one buyer to agree before it means anything.

After many hours of research, I went for my R based on the fact it was what I call the ‘unicorn’ years 17/18 that benefits from pre GPF and also having a digi dash. I’m very happy with my purchase!

Your research will also have identified that these years appear to be the ones that currently have imploding gearboxes and are currently being recalled.

Nope, missed that

Have a look at the threads on here. Apparently on the aux pump that is used for start/stop the shaft can come loose causing parts to be loose in the gearbox.

With the present DSG software there is no diagnostics for this so the first you

know about it is when the gearbox goes pop.

VW are currently doing a recall that updates the DSG software so it can detect the aux pump fault. Several members have had a gearbox error as soon as the car is driven after the update. It’s fair to say that had they not had the update and the fault not detected they would have eventually had a catastrophic failure.

Solution after receiving the error is to strip gearbox and inspect. Repairs required are anything from a new aux pump to a whole new DSG gearbox. VW seem to be covering the costs thus far.

And this is exactly how rumours start 😂

yes they’ve had a recall but I’ve personally not heard of any issues over the last 5-6 years of the 17-18 plate dsg box’s imploding .

has there been any on here that have ?

Imploding maybe a bit fat fetched, but there have been members across several of the VAG forums that have had catastrophic failures. There’s been others that have required whole new boxes once theirs has been opened and inspected.

Autocar commented a couple of years ago that VW had built in excess of 23 million DSG. gearboxes.
If We include the Mk8 R they’ll have built about 23 million and 25.😂

They must have got the knack by now?

They haven’t got the knack of manufacturing a coolant system that doesn’t leak, don’t get ahead of yourself.

As it's basically the same engine it wouldn't surprise me if the problem part is the same and therefore problems will start developing on the Mk 8 soon.

Correct me if I’m wrong but it’s all to do with the start stop pump shaft thing ? So I’ll be having my start / stop completely coded out when I can .

Yes, however It’s possible that the pump has already failed and without the latest software it’s undetectable.

so does that mean that all the 19/20 plate 7.5’s have the updated softwhere already ?

I don’t think so. They are not part of the recall so can only assume the design of the aux pump changed after a certain date and there have been no issues reported. VW won’t recall and update these cars if it believes it doesn’t need to.
