New Arteon R in Manganese Grey

Hi all

My Golf 7.5 R estate is now 5 years old and it is time for it to go. I absolutely loved this car and wasn't sure what would be a worthy replacement.

Mk8 estate was on the top of the list, but with no stock cars, no discounts available and crazy lead times, I pulled the trigger on a new Arteon R.

I got a really good discount from the dealers, who matched DTD for a well specced example. The price I paid for it is nearly the same as for the new Mk8 estate with similar kit(if not less).

What I like so far: amount of space inside, ride comfort, standard and extra kit, how it looks inside and outside. Also I feared it will be slower owing to its weight, but the new EA888 4th gen makes it feel as fast as the 7.5 estate.

What isn't so good: fuel consumption appears to be 4-5 mpg less than my Golf. I used to get 32mpg on my daily commute, now its down to 28. I also need to get rid of all the swirl marks inflicted by the dealers.

Nice. I see it's also got the 20" upgrade alloys and IQ lights with the light bar in the grill. What with 2 growing boys, I've been considering one of these as a replacement for my 7.5, though the sport brake version. The pano roof, leather sports seats, interior quality and acres of room is a real plus point. And I'm a sucker for those ridiculous shoulders above the rear arches. It makes my 7.5 estate look very slab sided.

Enjoy!

I have been looking at these also - possibly to replace my R estate.

Problem is - I then start looking at other cars, such as M340i etc - and then think do I want a 2.0 litre again, or do I want to experiance something else.

As you say - for me - I would get the arteon R over the golf 8 R estate - purely for the buttons still on the dash, and that the software is not quite as buggy - and you still get all the toys etc.

Im sure once the engine is broken in a little bit the mpg will improve although my R estate has stayed reasonably flat since new.
