im looking for a dash cam, never used one before but i wanted one specifically to use whilest my car is parked

reason being i sometimes have to park it in a space i dont like leaving it in with a tosser parked next to it

ive now got a big dink in my door and chipped paint due to said tosser

so i would like to capture such incidents if possible

does anyone use their dash cam for the same reason? is it possible to do so? what is the best type to check out?

You'll struggle to get anything that captures anything to the side of the car. You might hear the thunk of a door hitting yours and then see the car pulling away on the front or rear camera, but it'll be hard to prove it without capturing the exact person that did it.

As far cameras for the front and rear with parked recording, I believe the Blackvue cameras are the go to for a number of people on here. You'll need to pair it with one of their parking mode batteries though if you want to capture at all times. Otherwise the camera will draw off the cars battery and eventually drop out after a number of hours (would need to research exactly how long it would last). It won't drain the car battery right down or anything as there is a cut off when it gets to a certain voltage, but it just won't last long enough. It's really only good for a few hours in a supermarket car park or something (I believe one of our moderators (Booth) caught someone's kid bashing their car on their camera in a car park.

All in all, a full on blackvue front and rear camera, with the battery system and fully installed will probably set you back anywhere from £500-800 though.

I would also recommend Thinkware and Viofo, both of which I owned.

I was most impressed with the Viofo A129 Pro Duo that I had and would definitely recommend it.

Yes that’s right, it was well worth having a dashcam just for that incident you mention @tweaked9107 (see link), as their insurer paid out for a proper repair of the panel which was more than the cost of the dashcam and installation.

I’m now on my second Blackvue 2 channel (front and rear) dashcam.  Had a DR650 and now have a DR750X model.  Both very good with cloud capability.   Design of the cameras is nice and discreet.  Has parking mode which is very valuable (see above) and well worth it for those times you have to park in public car parks etc.  Although the camera with parking mode is hardwired in with a cut off when the car battery drops below a certain voltage as tweaked says, I would recommend you do consider an external battery pack to power the parking mode (such as Celllink Neo) as I do find that without one, over time, the car battery health is impacted by using parking mode with it running the battery down to the cut off regularly.  I have had to have the battery in my last two Rs replaced with less than, one with only 17k mikes on and latter one with even less  on, and I’m very much convinced that the dashcam parking mode was a factor in both cases.  But otherwise the Blackvue is a great  dashcam.

Whatever brand/model you choose it’s a worthwhile purchase for sure.

I have a NEXTBASE 622 & their rear add one camera.

It paid off last week when I guy reversed in to me whilst parking, I was in the shop grabbing a few bits.

I waited & confronted him, as his tow bar was plum in line with my heavily dented pressed plate.

He totally denied it, saying the alarm would have gone off if he'd have hit it, to which I said not necessarily, but my dash cam will have been trigged by its parking sensor.

Strangely enough he then asked to exchange numbers & he'd pay for it  to be sorted.

1 New Plate

1 New Plate surround

£45 inc vat

that was right crack wasnt it that?

i would be fuming

thing is though modern cars barely fit in parking spaces these days

and no one in this country seems bothered about addressing the issue

ive noticed recently in some videos ive seen in the states, they seem to have a lot wider parking spaces in a lot places now

dont know if it has always been like that over there because they generally do like a big car

Yeah, it was the kid did it (I trained my kid from an early age not to open a door without checking first) and I might have just sucked it up, but when the video showed the dad trying to rub it out (😂) and then move his car, that was the decider to pursue it.

Car parking spaces are still ridiculously small in some places but things are improving in my neck of the woods when new car parks go in and they have wider spaces and those buffer zone lines between them.  Much better!

the only reason he was trying to rub the paint off is because he didnt want you to notice it when you got back to your car

when he realised there is a good chance you would notice it he decided move

usually kids are the issue, my issue is a lady with huge backside getting her kid in a child seat in the back of a 3 door car whilest her door is swinging back and forth at my car

Our top sellers here are Ford Rangers (fun fact:  designed and engineered exclusively in Aust by the way, and now underpinning next gen Amaroks) Toyota hilux, Isuzu Dmax, rams, Toyota land cruisers etc, and other big big utes. They are too small for shopping centre car parks  and any garage in houses or units older than about ten years!!!

Yes, totally.  The icing on the cake was when he licked his finger and rubbed it again.  Nobody puts their drool on my car except me.  🤣

That scenario you had is so annoying.  You watch in nervous despair!  If I’ve parked up and am still in the car and someone parks next to me and they either have a bunch of kids or kid in a 3 door, I move my car before they get out.

Yesterday I was in a supermarket car park where they have marked out the parking bays again after making some changes, but they haven’t rubbed out the old bay lines so confusion reigns!  I’d parked up and was just about to get out when a lady pulled in and was tentatively inching around trying to work out which lines were the correct ones.  So she decided to use my car as the guide.  She was manoeuvring very nervously which makes me nervous so I decided to stay sat in my car, and twice abandoned her attempt but then tried again.  I must have been too intensely watching her because once she’s finally got her car in the bay (at an angle), she got out and tapped on my window and asked me if she was allowed to park there.  😄  She said the lines were confusing and she wasn’t sure if she was supposed to park there, so I reassured her that it was confusing with the lines and it was the public supermarket car park and she could park anywhere in any free bay and she was fine.   I was relieved to see her car still in place when I returned to mine.  😅  All that stress for a bunch of broccoli and some new potatoes!  😆

I had one at work several years ago in my 3 series. Came back to the car from the drivers side, got in, quickly popped home at lunch and didn't notice a thing. When I came back out of my house I approached the car from the passenger side at which point I noticed a long thick grey mark down the side of the car, probably about 1m long and across both doors. At least 2 inches wide as well. When I got back to work I went back to the space I was parked in before but both cars either side were blue and red. So I spent 10 minutes walking around the car park looking and low and behold I found a grey car with white paint all over the front corner of its bumper. The bumper was cracked as well. I measured the height of the white marks on his car vs the grey ones on mine and it was a match.

I spoke to security but they said they can't give me the details of the car owner and the CCTV wasn't facing that direction so I left a note on the car saying security are reviewing the footage, please call X number to discuss. Shocker the guy then called me and we went to take a look. He claimed he "felt" something but wasn't sure, and when he got out the car he didn't see any damage.... a 2" wide, 1m long grey scratch on a white car... didn't notice... what a load of bollocks. Why did you move to a different space then?! Pr*ck!

You half expect it of the randoms out in a supermarket car park, but not a colleague in the work car park.

its why i have another car for knocking about in, going supermarkets etc

1 litre engine, £30 a year road tax and that and the R cost about £400 odd a year to insure both

dont worry about parking it anywhere, even go the pub in it and leave it there until the next day

makes you appreciate your good car more when you use it too :)

I’m surprised he phoned you, that’s something but then to fudge it and pretend no damage and move his car!   Grrr.

Sometimes I think colleagues are just as bad as the supermarket numpties.  When I used to work in the office (now WFH) even though I parked in the farthest reaches of the car park always, my previous R was hit once by some idiot trying to park next to it (damaged bumper and I had to have it repaired and re sprayed), and twice damaged by people opening doors onto it and scuffing down the side with their bags.  Not once did anyone leave a note or own up.  Happened to a few other people too that cared about their cars.  In the end we had the facilities manager put out a few whole organisation emails reminding people that damaging someone’s car and driving off was no different to hit and run.  Not sure if that would have had any impact anyway and became a moot point as Covid then hit and since then predominantly all WFH.  I still go in the office every couple weeks for a day or so, but much much less cars there now and I park the farthest away.  Always a risk though and so dashcam parking mode essential.

Yeh I guess I just figured it would be a case of it feeling different when you might know the person whose car you've damaged, but apparently not. I did have one colleague as well who was called out for banging his door against other cars multiple times but still didn't care. He just couldn't seem to grasp that people didn't want scratches, scuffs and dents all down the side of their cars. He was also a shockingly bad driver though so it might of just gone hand in hand.

My current job doesn't have me sharing a car park with inconsiderate colleagues anymore, but instead I visit several different places all throughout the day. Sometimes I get a nice visitors spot but other times I'm at the mercy of public parking or on street parking. I'm sure it's only a matter of time but something happens.
