Stage 2 without a new intercooler.

Has anyone gone to a stage 2 map without upgrading the front mount intercooler.

thanks .

It's better to have one, but when I was running jb4 at 6psi I never saw iat rise above 38c and that was in 25c heat, but you will gain more power and be more consistent.. I would say if you're definitely not going past stage 2 and don't track it, then its not worth the money

I’ve been running stage 2 HO APR for years on stock IC. No issues at all for me re heat soak but I don’t track car or push hard too often. Doing the occasional fast take offs to speed limit etc never raises the temps much for me.

You will gain some extra HP and prevent heat soak but unless going stage 3 or tracking car it’s not needed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Isn't it called "stage 1.75" with the FMIC 😄

Why go to all that expense & skimp out at the last leg though ?

You better off with a FMIC & uprated Charge/Throttle pipes to maximize the power output, along with keeping it all cool, as cool air means more power remember .

I studied tune stages at university and it's actually stage 1.045111 😂

It depends on whether the question is..

Is it absolutely necessary or will it perform better with it..

You will make more power and more consistent power with it..

Still can't figure out why VW sandwich their intercoolers between the radiator and AC condenser 🤔

I ran without one for a few weeks when i was at Stage 2, below is before and after fitting an Airtec Intercooler.

It definitely makes a difference...

that’s impressive gains, is that at exactly the same boost levels?

Yeah, no change to anything else. Just installed the Airtec and told them i want to see if it made a difference so ran it a few times on the dyno and it gave pretty much the same figures every time.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I know jace said why go to all that expense   & miss out the last bit but most of the expense is the front mount & charge pipes.

My original question was can it be done and to see a small gain then I would be happy.

Cheers guys.

That’s some decent gains there. Much more than I would  have expected. Makes me think I might look for deals on do88 at Black Friday sales and see if I can get one decent price.

No brainer really if you push your car hard. You get more reliable and consistent power, especially in hot conditions.
