Would this sort of torque (442 LB FT) at lower RPM (3300) be considered about the limit on a standard engine ? Or well within a reasonable safety margin ?

Depends on who you ask, making that kind of torque low down would give the rods a work out... But if I was making that at 4k rpm not so much.. what does your tuner say , must be a beast of a hybrid to make that so low in the rpm

I think this would be a stock IS38 mate.

442ftlbs on stock is38 not impossible but still surprising, I would have thought it would need near 2bar of boost and a hpfp for that, but I'm no tuner so I don't really know...

No brainer really if you push your car hard. You get more reliable and consistent power, especially in hot conditions.

My factor is I don’t push car hard at all and monitoring inlet temps I’ve never had heat soak issues. It’s a no brainer like you said for those tracking and pushing car hard but that’s not me. It’s just daily with the occasional fast take off at lights. Plus I can’t do self install so added cost of 4+hrs labour it’s not exactly “cheap” anywhere between $1700-2500 depending on IC brand etc.

It’s fine.

Good torque figures.

Every Dyno reads differently though.

We need a Dyno shoot out 😀

450lbs is what Garrett quote as an upgrade with their Powermax Stage 1 turbo alongside 450bhp.

Not massive amounts considering £ V BHP.
My APR stage 2 was giving 415-420lbs which has now been on mine since 2017.

The difference is actually pretty significant though lol. Numbers don't always tell the full story, my mates Garret Stage 3 (450/460) pulls like Stage 2 on steroids. After i drove it, mine was booked in straight for Stage 3.

Stage 3?

Did you mean Garrett Powermax stage 1?

Seems a nice upgrade without engine build and one  that wont blow the DQ250/381 to bits!

Good track package with early boost 😀

Garret Powermax Stage 1 + HPFP = 'Stage 3' Golf R.

Perfect step up from Stage 2 if you don't want to push it too far and keep it reliable.  Pulls way stronger then any Stage 2 car.

I chose a different Turbo as wanted to push it further but the Garrett Powermax Stage 1 + HPFP is a lovely daily setup.

Below is a graph of his.

I agree great looking graphs….stage 2 ++!

Nice and comfortable on gearbox and block and well within tolerance. No lag compared to bigger turbos.

Another positive is price as in reality a 450bhp Golf is a quick daily that’s affordable. You’d have to spend a lot of money on a newer quicker car or go for an older V8 Id E92 M3. / C63 and mod them so MK7/7.5 is still such a bargain

A properly setup (brakes/suspension) Stage 2 Golf R is IMO a tough car to beat never mind Stage 3. I used to own a V8 N/A Stage 2 C63 PPP (LSD from factory) and my Golf R would easily smoke it.

Both the N/A C63 and M3 have legendary engines but that's about it, great sounding muscle cars but way too heavy and slow.

A nice upgrade IMO, is a 2017+ Stage 2 RS3.
