GaryP
So after months of hunting for the replacement car, while driving round in an 18 year old 142k miles Renault Megane, I finally put a deposit down on a lovely Lapiz Blue 2020 R Wagon. Would have preferred more bells and whistles on it, but the time had come to compromise a bit and get in a suitable car. This one came up and is in fantastic condition so happy with the choice. Plan to collect it on Monday. 2 years warranty, roadside assistance, 5k finance to get £250 deposit contribution and Minor and Major Service thrown in. Will clear the finance off ASAP to minimise interest charges. All servicing including Haldex is up to date and was carried out for last 3 years by the dealership I am buying from. Absolutely love this colour with the Spielberg wheels. Monday can't come soon enough!! Booth11
Sounds like your patience in the hunt for a good car has really paid off. Looks a stunning car. Welcome back to R ownership and hope you’re happy to be back in one. GaryP
DSarge
Big day for you today! Hope it goes smoothly. Great to see someone getting an R estate; don’t see much about them these days. GaryP

GaryP Posted Monday at 21:50 Author Report Share Posted Monday at 21:50 So it would appear that the new R Wagon has some fancier auto headlights than I first thought. I had thought that it was just an auto turn ON and OFF of the High Beam, but from what I saw the other night it looks more like the headlight beam adapts when there is an oncoming vehicle come in sight. A bit like how the Audi Matrix headlights work. Am I right in thinking this? Headlights like that were an option on the Mk7.5 R? Thanks. jrw
DSarge Posted Tuesday at 04:57 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 04:57 Matrix LEDs were standard on the Tiguan R so wouldn’t be surprised if they’re also standard on the 8R. Not sure about the 7.5.

Think it became standard on later mk7.5s at least. Some post info in this thread... GaryP
Hertsman Posted Tuesday at 11:40 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 11:40 Dynamic Light Assist was on my 2019 TCR and can confirm it is also on my recently purchased 2019 Golf R so would imagine that means its definitely on a 20 plate R, and its a great peace of kit, the lights themselves make this super bright tunnel of light you travel through on full beam, but when a car approaches, the lights adjust to dim the area that would blind the oncoming car, so you do nothing but drive and there is no super annoyed full beams thrown at you for not being quick enough to dip the full beam, all perfectly seamless and along with the auto hold a piece of tech really admire and love. As you can see in this video, there is a menu setting for DLA where you can choose to activate or not, if that option is in menu, then would say that means its fitted. Video gives good demonstration to behaviour. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCuxraR-72Y GaryP and fastandy
golf7.5r Posted Tuesday at 11:50 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 11:50 Do they work like that? I thought the camera picked up oncoming headlights and just dipped the beams automatically?
GaryP Posted Tuesday at 11:53 Author Report Share Posted Tuesday at 11:53 Also loving the move to 19's that this new to me Wagon has brought. The car feels much more planted than the previous one did on the 18 inch Cadiz. It feels a bit firmer ride wise, but nothing that is currently making me wish I'd held out for DCC, although I appreciate lots of people love that, and I have experienced it when looking for my replacement R, and it was nice putting it in comfort mode. I'd probably drive 90% of the time on the firmer setting anyway so not going to stress over not having it. Loving the keyless too - especially when getting out of the car with bags in both hands and not having to try manipulate any leftover fingers to press a key button! Loving the car so far. Bought a cheapo boot liner from The Range to minimise the amount of grass/dirt/grit getting ground in to the upholstery from my golf trolley and golf bag. It only cost a tenner but does the job adequately well. So tempted to get seat covers to stop the kids messing up the fabric seats with feet, chocolate, sandwiches, sweets etc. Didn't bother on the contract hire car - but this is mine, all mine! LOL. Eagerly awaiting the first frost so I can properly try out the Climate Windscreen. Only down'r is the lack of sound, rumble and pops/farts from the exhaust. You literally get nothing on gear change under boost/load and that's a bit naff. Could be taking a look at BCS soon!!

It's subtle, but noticeable. If I get a chance I'll get my daughter to video it - but it'll be just like the video clips in that linked thread above. Dynamic light assist is much improved apparently, ive not benefited from driving one but it has shutters to mask parts of the headlight. A much more advanced system. Different generation camera used as well. The triangular shaped one in the vid. GaryP and golf7.5r

My previous GTD, R and TCR all had DCC, my newly acquired 2019 Golf R has 19" Pretoria with no DCC and would say quite readily from understanding the comparison very well, that the ride feels no different from 'normal' in all those previous cars, which was a perfectly compliant and comfortable setting. Think the Continental Contact Sport 7 maybe is playing a role also, as the review scores are quite high for ride quality. Had climate screen on my TCR, it was very satisfying last December when we had that extreme cold snap to just watch the ice separate and just slide down the screen in a minute or so, and the normal blowers are pretty good at doing same thing but taking a little longer, but climate is a nice to have. With regards keyless, its a preference but keyless is actually something you really should look to deactivate when leaving car, you press fob and swipe across handle with hand, which disables keyless completely, and you then have to open car with fob, but the car start button still functions off the keyless. With regards noise, think this R has some nice overrun and pops still and that the fakery is pretty decent when in Race as an add. Quietness actually has its place, and have put engine and steering into comfort setting in individual mode for that noise free calm cabin environment when in town and commute traffic. Was not seeking it, but mine came with Dynaudio, and can see what all the fuss is about now, much better than thought would be, so a really nice bonus. Gutted when had to let me TCR go, huge fan of the MK 7.5, some really nice subtle styling changes from the MK 7, nailing the lighting cluster and DRL, and think it balances everything perfectly, comfort and performance and tech and practicality, there is simply nothing missing in a driving experience, and we missed it so much we went and bought this R even though we did not really need to, https://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/30926-show-us-your-‘post-wltp’-golf-r’s/?do=findComment&comment=653314

I knew about high beam assist as you also need lane assist but never heard of dynamic on the mk7. I guess it's quite rare as it was an expensive option? My 2017 R wagon has the fancy matrix headlights (IIRC it has about 5 different segments controlled individually). I think it might have been standard equipment in Australia at the time. It is OK and works pretty well but only above a certain speed (80kmh ?) and where there is no street lighting, It does help to see kamikaze animals lurking at the side of the road, but doesn't have the distance throw that I would prefer.
