Nes
Hi, I have only just purchased a Golf R MK8 and i've come across an issue with my key. Most likely caused by the last owner. I noticed on my Spare key the housing is coming apart and it is really difficult in trying to get this restored to its original position. I don't know if anyone else has had a similar issue and if you have any tips on how i can apply it correctly, https://ibb.co/PrfvcHJ
AHG
I heard about it happening sometimes You best take it apart and reinstall it correctly I think there are 1-2 screws (not sure, so check) Some managed to force it back in by curling it but with plastic I'd be cautious You can change battery while you're at it
Nes
Sorry, it's not the plastic side i am having issues with. It is where the buttons are. The rubber/silicone cover that has pulled apart.

The corner of one of my keys went like this when I was changing the battery. With some gentle manipulation it went back into the silver part but it was only a very small section that came away from the silver trim and distorted. Have you tried gently trying to push the silicone back into the silver part using a small blunt trim tool, starting at one side and working your way round? I have tried a few times to get it in, I can get one side in but the never the other. I've tried a few different techniques without much luck so far. The space is really tight around there, so there isn't much give.
R_wannabe_owner
@Nes - if you’ve only just bought the car (from a VW dealer?), I’d take the key fob back and ask for it to be replaced at no cost to you. Nes

I realize that, but in order to put it back you’d need to take it apart from the back to find the screws you’d need to open (one of the, is shown it’s the arrow). You can try pushing it back, but yours is all out, so best to do it right. Shouldn’t be more than 10-15min of work Nes

Thanks, i have logged a complaint with them. They had conveniently put this key with my paper work. 4 hours ago, AHG said: I realize that, but in order to put it back you’d need to take it apart from the back to find the screws you’d need to open (one of the, is shown it’s the arrow). Nes
Thanks @AHG, using the guidance you provided i was able to fix the issue. The small pin is a real pain to get out, once it is removed though it is fairly straightforward to get the silver casing off and then you can place the rubber/silicone piece and get the flush finish. AHG
Pictures, brother … so we can all learn. Where was the pin located and how did you manage to remove it ? Happy to hear you found a solution without the headache (and cost) of a dealer visit Nes
Nes
https://ibb.co/vsf23cL https://ibb.co/SX7N9YR https://ibb.co/TL2kMxr https://ibb.co/y59Vq6X I've uploaded the pictures which i found online. I forgot to take my own. I was more worried about damaging/breaking the key at the time. The first thing I did was to completely remove the loose silicone piece followed by the plastic cover on the other side. I then gave it a good clean. I also removed the battery and physical key. Following this, i had a really small screw driver and I pushed down on the pin. I was then able to give the housing a slight twist. This then released the top piece, this is the chrome piece which is on the side where the release button is for the key. Once the was released, i was able to push the other bigger piece out. The pin stayed in, i then pulled it out using a small appliers. After this the key was in 4 bits. The 2 chrome bits for the key housing, silicone piece and the plastic part of the key. I then used an air gun to give it a nice clean. After this i placed the silicone piece onto the plastic part of the key. Once done i then added the lager chrome piece. I then turned the key over to make sure the silicone piece and the chrome had a flush finish. The next step is to then add the other chrome piece in. Once done and the finish is flush. I then got the pin and pushed it back in. The pin is small and it requires some push to get it back in. I used a small wooden plank to rest the key on to push it in. The final step is to push the physical key back in. I have found this reasonably easy, so much so that my other key which had a small bubble i took it apart this morning too and fixed that too. Both keys now look spot on. I wish i made a video now. If i need to repeat this ever again i sure will do in the hope it might help someone else. As there isn't much info for this online currently. Silverstoned Posted yesterday at 04:44 Report Share Posted yesterday at 04:44 For what it's worth I had to do the same to my key a while back. I had to cut away some of the plastic on the button side in order to get to the pin to push it out. It looks like you managed to get to the pin without this modification. Nicely done!
