The Wagon is no more…

Wagon R

..in my possession.

I traded it in because at a spirtely 61 years of age the car’s reputation is bringing calls from school kids waiting for their bus home encouraging me to “go on mister, rev it” and “let’s see it go, mister”. I wanted something less conspicuous and more comfortable …also admit to feeling like I wanted something that accurately reflects my 45 years of hard work and paying taxes! So I took a 4 year lease on this:

M340i xDrive Touring (I’m not quite ready for an invalid carriage just yet, sonny jim 😂

I’ve had it for nearly two weeks and so far, I’m very happy with my decision. The car’s like a beast in stealth mode, and the quality of the interior is in another league. I blame VW’s update for the Mk8 Golf that made me scrutinise interior quality more than I normally would, and having had a Audi A3 before the Golf, I wanted something fresh and non-diesel (I’m looking at you mr S4) or Plug-in, so this fits the bill perfectly.

I may have a couple of bits (boot buddy, travall dog guard) to sell when I’ve a bit more time to go through what I’ve dumped in the shed, so I’ll be hanging around for a while yet. But I’d like to thank those that have submitted how-to’s and given general advice! They’re the ones that make the forum popular. Salut! 🥂😁😁

Stunning car and if i wanted to treat myself this would be on my short list.

However i have retired again at 60(first retired 10 years ago but got bored but health issues are a problem this time)

I will be getting rid of my Golf R early next year as i am fed up of everyone wanting to race me and the fact i can't park it safely in the many places i like to visit.

I got that, but fitting a Ghost immobiliser helped a lot with my theft anxiety, and I pretty much ended up parking wherever I needed to without a second thought …had the Ghost transferred to the new car too.

Thanks Neil,

The car really is a wolf in sheep’s clothing! It’s only the wheels and badge on the rump that give it away as anything special and that suits me. I thought about a C43 ..but having had two previous V6 2.5 Fords, the 4 cylinder engine, reportedly clunky gearbox and blingy cockpit put me off and it’s nice to be in a 6 cylinder again.

I don’t believe it’s as quick as the Golf was on twisty country lanes (it’s too heavy), but I‘m ready for a more relaxed journey now anyway! So the Golf remains the best handling car I’ve ever owned and I’ll cherish the memories.

Congratulations on the new wagon @Wagon R!

It looks a proper mature and stealth estate; a comfy cruiser with a tiger under the bonnet for when wild beast mode is desired.

A farewell to your lovely R though and it’s great to hear that you’ll remember it fondly even if you won’t miss it being a teen dream magnet.  😂.

Thank you for all your contributions to the forum over the years, and no need to be a stranger, keep up updated on how you’re finding the BMW.  😊

Love this, i tested the old 340i Touring before my S5 and in hindsight wish i'd bought it, the newer one  with the X drive is the natural  move forward and certainly a step up, Hope you love it as much as you did the R .

I’m sure I’ll love it, once I figure where to stow all my stuff! It’s lacking storage …no knee pocket, no airline type seat pockets, no sunglasses holder, tiny glovebox, very little underfloor boot storage - I’ve been spoilt by the Golf and not sure how I’ll manage! It looks like I’m going to have to make some executive decisions and start trimming the fat. 😩

When you add “premium” and “6 cylinder petrol” to the search criteria, there really isn’t that big a choice anymore. Everyone seems to be downsizing engines to meet emissions targets and I’m bucking the trend. And even though it has a little less space than the Golf behind the seats, the dog is willing to make that sacrifice. ☺️

Thanks Becs. I’ll pop back from time to time, although I doubt there will be many mods to show …but we’ll see. 👋

That’s really nice, I’ve a soft spot for these.  It’s definitely a worthy replacement for the R and the best colour and wheels available on the M340.

Bit surprised about it missing some fairly basic bits, does it have the comfort or comfort plus pack?  BMW estates usually have good underfloor storage as well.

Thanks, Martin! I’ve never really looked at them before around 2 months ago, but once I test drove one I was hooked.

It does have the comfort pack - which is supposed to include “extended storage” but I’m not seeing the extension! I need to find out what it is supposed to include, But I’ve been really busy with work of late and haven’t spent as much time with it as I would normally! I just seem to be studying, then driving it to and from training and assessments at the moment. 🫣

Do you have the rubber strips in the boot floor?  I think that’s the extended storage.  They are pretty interesting, the rubber strips are flush so it’s easy to slide things in/out and then you’re on the move they raise up to stop things sliding around.

If you need any BMW info, let me know….I’ve had 4 over the years, last one was a 2017 750i which I had until 3.5 years ago.
