Danno
Long drive down from London to Brighton today. Started off very wet and it's a but of an animal in the wet!!! Then I nearly got wiped out by a massive white Mercedes Van who lost concentration on a country road and strayed over onto my side. Luckily he woke up and swerved back just in the nick of time. He'd have run me over at a closing speed of 120mph. #goodnightnurse Makes you realise how vulnerable you are in something like that! savage16v
Danno
Gave it a good wash today. Clayed the rear end, then Autoglym Super Resin Polish to finish. It come up ok actually... Then I decided to polish up the aluminium petrol tank cover. This too came up a treat. Although I'm not convinced I shouldn't get one of those black vinyl popped on Tonneau covers. leonmac and invisiblekid

Don't get one of those pop on covers though Thanks. You don't reckon I should get one of these to neaten up the back?Happy to listen to your advice. Do you think the polished aluminium looks better then? I thought it looked a bit homespun...

Danno
Met up with a few guys of the Southern Kit Car Forum. Good meet and bloody hell they have some fast machinery and big balls!! Anyway, I got to stretch the cars legs a bit and found a new "turbo boost mode" between 4k to 6k. It absolutely goes mental and suddenly you're doing stupid speeds! The bumpy country roads are not my friend at the moment as the car is lower than a snakes belly. I need to raise it up a bit before I leave my sump in the woods! I think the engine is in good nick as the oil pressure is bang on, so that's a bonus. I'm still not giving it 100% revs yet. It's still being run in, bearing in mind it's been stored for 10 years. I stink of oil and petrol, but after about 90 miles racing some very tidy machinery around the Sussex twisties I've got a massive smile on my face. If you've not been in one of these types of cars I highly recommend it to any petrol head. Careful though you'll be hooked, like me! Here's some pics.. PS note to self; buy a snood and a wooly hat before buying seats. I nearly lost my nose to the elements!!! [ I was encouraged that most of the work I need to do is cosmetic only. I'll have this beast look ship shape by the end of the summer!

savage16v
Looking good mate, sounds like a right ball. Love cars like these, they are so much fun, and encourage you to do very silly things indeed Danno
Rossi
It looks great Danno. I'm taking out a Caterham Roadster SV later this month - can't wait. If I like it I'm going to seriously look into getting a 2nd hand one. They hold their prices very well though! Only seem to depreciate about 10% after 2 years. savage16v

It's a proper bloke's toy. Beats tin tops for weekend fun any day of the week. My mate has just got one from PT Sports cars. Second hand. Cost him £14k You're local to me aren't you? PM me and we can meet up for a chat if you like. Rossi
B33fy
Great Thread Danno, I see you've met the Uckfield Possie and survived,.. well done. I've been in a few active forums over recent past and can honestly say the SKCC takes the biscuit. Total lunatics and a great bunch. Car looks great, nice tidy engine in there, proves you don't need huge horsepower to have fun. Hopefully meet up at some point at breakfast. They were all faster than me (I was feeling my way round the car :-/) So as you probably know I managed to snap the end of the metal dipstick off in the sump and had to drop the sump to get at it. It was a good opportunity to check the condition of the engine. Here are some pics. It was a pig of a job as I had no ramp and pretty much did it single handed. Apart from the wife helping hold the sump up as I scrabbled to get the bolts in place.
Danno
On a different note I managed to track down the guy that used to race my car for Tiger themselves. Jim Dudley, the boss of Tiger Racing managed to track him down. He was an ex F3 driver called Kevin Jones, and pretty handy by all accounts. I wanted to ask him what Vulcan engineering (based at Brands Hatch) had done to tune the engine, as without fully stripping it down it would always remain a mystery. If anyone would know it would be the guy who raced it. Finally he got back to me in great detail. Funnily enough just after I had finished the b@stard sump job and I have to say it made a sh!t day brilliant! Hi Daniel, I spoke with Jim about the Tiger and finally found the notes that I kept on the car. The engine was originally put together by Vulcan as they did all the engines for the cars we built for Japan plus some of the UK cars we built alongside them. We had to keep the engine at 1600cc as we were to race in the up to 1600cc class. Unfortunately the engine wasn't great and when we took it to the rolling road we found that we only had 95 bhp at the rear wheels. After stripping the engine down we found that a Kent 244 fast road cam was in it, so changed to a 254 cam, Jim worked on the head and inlet manifold and we then had 105 bhp at the wheels. We later fitted a 747 cam with the ignition timing set at 34 degrees and got 108 bhp at the wheels. The car originally had a 3.5 diff ratio in the back axle but we took this out and put in a normal road axle which I believe was a 4.4 ratio. The car with half a tank of fuel weighed in at 540 kilos so had a good power to weight ratio especially for the road. I hope this is of some help and it is always nice to know where the cars we have built actually are and who owns them. Kind regards, Kevin Jones. noggin
Cool! Glad to see you're having fun with the Tiger. I went to the Kit Car Show at Stoneleigh last month and there was a very good turn out of the Tiger Owners Club. Some lovely cars and some for sale -very tempting. My plan for an open top Seven will have to wait til next year now as I've upgraded my motorbike. Are you allowed swap a Q plate for a personalised one -without the Q designation?
Danno
I would have gone to Stoneleigh but I was busy that weekend ;-( Definitely get one. They are such good fun. Any ideas which type? Westfield, Caterham, Tiger etc. Re the Q plate. No you can't have a personalised plate. The reason certain 7s have private or normal plates and others don't is about having the core parts from a car of an identifiable year of production. If you buy an engine from new and use an old gearbox and divetrain, then it will be a Q Plate. If you use a donor car for the majority of bits; engine, drivetrain gearbox etc then you can apply for a normal plate with the same year the donor car was registered. And I then presume you can have a personalised plate.
