  1. @andygo - yeah, I get what you're saying. I have a manual and it's...a great car for (in the words of Neil Pert, "...shifting and drifting") but it really is a mushy gearbox. That being said, I stopped babying it and am getting my hand-foot coordination to the point where I can nail the shifts 9/10s of the time, quickly. Still...no desire for a DSG vs Stick war...just curious. btw - the worst transmission I've experienced is a Triumph Spitfire. It taught me how to downshift but I'm convinced that the gears would get out at night, move themselves around in different orders in a (very successful) effort to keep me in continual surprise.
  2. Just curious. Why did you buy a Manual instead of the auto? For me, I proved it at 1600hrs today; my foot-hand combo is no where near as fast as the mechanics but the thought, "Hmm! That was about half a second!" was pretty sweet.
  3. @Shug And you get folding mirrors too...?! Geez. How come we (blue coats) don't get any nice stuff?!?!
  4. Cogito - good point on the justification; the mirror dip is a feature I've come to like (over the years) and if it can be done on my R, I'll do it.
  5. OK @Shug AND @gregozedobe Unfortunately, the trick didn't take; mine's a manual. Gads, this is such an easy thing for VW to do, why the freaking mystery? And the requested photo...(just took two of them!) Any other ideas...great. If not, I'm going to stew about this and let it ruin my day.
  6. gregozedobe - Thank you. That's good info...and I will try it.
  7. RWJ - Yes, and yes. Your sentiments are mine.
  8. Ok. So...what is it; 80% of here aren't Yanks? So this is for the rest of us. How the fooking ay'll (learned that from my Brit buddies) do I get the damn passenger mirror to dip on reverse?! I'm ALMOST ready to buy one of those ridiculously priced app-things that plug in and override systems but seeing how Das Kommanders at Das Auto have decided we Americans (i.e. victors) get a different Golf R than anyone else... I don't know. I feel offended. Anyway. Any American owners successfully using the dip-mirror in reverse for their Yankee Rs?
  9. I TOTALLY need to 'get out more'! (LOL). It didn't take long though...I made it while my Star Trek uniform was being dry cleaned.
  10. Hey. I've been a part of just about every car cult...and so far, the R-cult is tops. I won't go into the "why's" but when I try to wear R-gear or indulge in cult-accoutrement, no joy. (insert sfx of howling wind, desolate terrain). SO... I found a Hot Wheel® Mk7 and attempted to make it into my own. It sucks...sorta. But, at least it's MY suck. (Sorta). Tear it apart. However, from here on out, I am a modest expert-wanna-be at taking Hot Wheels apart and customizing them. It's too freaking easy!
  11. So...the R's infotainment center has an "images" feature - what the heck is it good for?? I put some jpgs on a thumb drive and was able to view them...but using my car as a photo viewer is kinda...dumb? However, it occurred to me that there may be other uses. Anyone have any ideas?
  12. Mk7.5 here. I notice the infotainment section has a function that allows the system to read images on a USB drive. Is there any purpose to this? (i.e. creating a startup screen)? If so, how does one work it in? I can't ever see doing a photo preview on the little beastie's screen...
  13. Don’t we export Chevy Malibus to you?! If not, you’re missing out on this wonderful automotive sleeping pill...
  14. Thank you, Raiden, Booth 11... I've tucked a microfiber cloth in the door pocket per suggestion. I especially like the idea of anti-static glasses cleaner (I wear glasses too and have the stuff in abundance).
  15. Hey. I have almost a month on my (USA spec) 2018 Mk 7.5 R...manual transmission. My avg. mpg is 26; about half hwy cruising (85mph) and in-town. I'm not going to think about any mods that would break warranty, especially this early in the game. Some things I'm not wholly thrilled about: the transmission, the (lack of) exhaust note and odd little buzz/rattle that my prior German (non-VW) cars just didn't have. But, I think the motor is fantastic; the turbo is especially sweet! The seats are good...the suspension is a dream...and the understated 'looks' are exactly what I was looking for.
  16. Hate’em. It makes no sense to have something that leaves finger prints...I clean them off and just end up ruining my work. (Sigh). First-world problems. But. There’s got to be a hydro/oleophobic “something” that would help reduce finger prints without altering touch-screen functionality...right? So, anyone solved the problem of filthy touchscreens (yeah, yeah, “don’t use it” is clever and so is “wash your hands” )?
  17. Thank you for the welcome! I like the R and will enjoy learning more about it.
  18. Really...what a neat machine! I sorted through the lot that everyone else does and accepted the blend of speed, stealth, performance and functionality. 2018 R Type.
