It wasn't black, just darker than new oil.
-
Back on the subject of a 1k mile oil change, I just hit 1007 miles and did the oil change this afternoon. Personally, I have never done an oil change on any car with just 1k miles on it, but plenty of changes with run-in cars at 2k or 3k, so I know what to expect. What surprised me was how dark the oil was. Inspection of the filter showed up a few microscopic specks, which I expected; the filter was clearly doing its job. All of the contaminents too small for the filter to catch was clearly making the oil quite a bit darker than expected, so I'm glad I didn't wait another 11 months before the change. The idea that you run the car in for 1k miles and then let it rip with such oil in it makes no sense to me.

For the sake of £75 for the oil and oem filter, it's worth the 45 minute job!

So, I'm in my 3rd week of the 8.5R, and I am convinced it's a much better car than my last two Mk8s. I'm also at nearly 800 miles - only a few hundred miles to go before I let it rip. I think this one will be a longer term keeper than the other two, so I wonder what everyone's thoughts are on a 1000 mile oil and filter change? The (former) engineer in me tells me this is the right thing to do. I've already bought the oil and filter, but I'm interested in everyone's thoughts. If it's run-in after 1000 miles, then this bedding in of components will surely carry contaminents in the oil, however small. Sorry if this has been talked about before.

So, just a few observations on the 8.5R, having had it for just over a week: I'm surpised that VW are still fitting wipers that don't actually work. I mean, they must know this right? Did they get a job lot on some cheapo rubber and just decide to run the stock down? Anyway, the issue is fixed with a set of Aerotwins (A864S is the set you want, £20.95 from Amazon). Secondly, I'm rather embarressed to confess that I didn't know the car had Park Assist as standard now. The question is: Is it any good, and should I trust it? Does it understand kerbs and whatnot? Is it Park Assist Plus? I've actually been scared to try it out.

I haven't done anything with OBDeleven yet - is it worth doing? I don''t see are Pure option on the internal sound, and Comfort and Eco don't make much sense. I've left it in comfort.

I picked up my new golf 8.5R last week. The dealer did not provide an owners manual, the dealer said "owners’ manuals/handbooks do not always come with the vehicle as it is all available online and through the infotainment screen" is this a thing now?
-
Thanks Rebecca, I was beginning to think there was something wrong with the car!

Another 8.5 newbie question - sorry if this has already been discussed, i couldn't find anything on it. With the Mk8, while cycling through the various options for external exhaust sound, you could really tell the difference between the modes. On the 8.5, it seems the exhaust note is quieter, and I can hardly tell the difference between the modes. I only just got the car on Friday, and I offloaded the Mk8 in June (I mostly use another car in the summer, so it didn't make sense to keep it), so it could be my memory playing tricks. Am I imagining it? I'm not revving agressively until it's run in, so keeping under 4000rpm.

JUst picked up my 8.5 on Friday. Where did the odometer go?
-
Thanks everyone. I'm really looking forward to the 8.5. Is the power increase really noticeable?
-
Is it the same as here?:

Hey everyone! I have my 8.5 arriving next week. I've been searching these threads and can't find anything about what can/can't be done with OBDEleven. I presume that SFD2 hasn't been cracked yet, so is there anything we are able to tweak at all?

Thanks for the replies everyone!

So, after weeks of trying to get the new 8.5R ordered, and opting for the foolwing extras: Lapiz Blue DCC Winter Pack 2 I was called by the dealer to be told that I can't have Winter Pack 2 unless I have leather seats. When did this happen? I always thought (with my last 2 MK8s) that the additional winter pack gives you heated seats. Turns out the info on this is very confusing. The R, or at least the 8.5 comes with heated front seats as standard. So what does the Winter Pack give you? I know that it includes heated rear seats, but what else? Is the heated steering wheel standard. 8.5 owners please chip in! On a separate note, I'm done with VWFS. I have had finance with both previous mk8 R golfs, and finance was approved instantly. This time, they requested bank statements. That was painful enough, but it should have been evident how much I earn from those alone. But no, they wanted tax returns. Really? Asking for bank statemets was intrusive enough. Affordability checks? i'm already paying them monthly, and the new one is £40 more a month. I told them to get lost, and I'll be paying cash for my new R. And while I was at it, I settled the finance on my 2023 R. I'm not giving them any more interest.

Thanks - this makes sense - I was trying to do it under Profile!

Thanks Rebecca! I've noticed something strange on my profile - I've updated it with my latest cars, but it still shows the signature from ages ago - am I doing somthing wrong?

I'm getting a good deal on a trade-in on my 2nd Mk8R, so just put in the order for the 8.5. I've had two white 8Rs, so it's time for Lapiz Blue, DCC, and Winter Pack - almost poverty spec. Arriving early Sept with the coming of the 75 plates (in the UK). I've been very absent lately - has anyone managed to code-out the speed limiter, or does it have to be part of the start-up routine?

Thank you Rebecca! That will save me hours of searching! Btw, after a chat with the dealer, he thinks that June will be the earliest order date for the 8.5. -

Hey all, I just picked up my second Mk8 Golf R - exactly the same spec (winter pack, reversing camera) but with the addition of DCC which I think is brilliant. A couple of things I have noticed that are different from my 71 plate: - Steering wheel centre airbag and logo - Centre console is now piano black gloss instead of textured plastic See pics attached. Not sure if this has been noticed/discussed? I guess that people would have been unaware of the change unless they stepped out of one of the older ones and into a new one - anyone know when these changes happened? .... while I'm here, I can't finf the pages here that describes how to code out the lane asssist and the seatbelt beeping - anyone know the links? Thanks in advance! -

I just got an update on the delivery of my second Mk8 R - it's going to be built in week 37 which is September, for delivery in October. Does anyone know for sure what the 8.5 situation is, or is it just speculation? -

Oh god, I don't remember! I know I found all the info on this forum, so maybe someone else can chime in wit the link? I also coded out the seatbelt noise - It keeps going even when you are reversing, and I often reverse down a really long driveway. -

Hi Rebecca, No idea on the first question, but they are Inchcape (in this case the excellent Swindon branch), who are quite big and I know they have pre-order stock. A few weeks ago, I was offered a March delivery Lapiz R which was fully loaded - too rich for me and I really would prefer white or black, so I passed on that one. The only gremlin I have noticed that is really annoying is the climate 'sync' button on the touchpad fails to work, after the car decides to unsync both sides. Otherwise, I love it, once you code out the lane assist and the stop/start. I didn't think I would get on with DSG, but I'm now a convert. Likewise the touch screen - I don't get how it annoys people. For me it wsa like moving from a Blackberry to a smartphone - there's no going back! Am I the first one here to be on my second 8R? -

My Sept'21 8R was ordered by me in May '21 and was pre-ordered before that by the dealer. Same with this one - the delivery date is 1 Sept but realistically I have been told it could be up to 2 weeks late.
