  1. I’ve purchased a Golf R, paid my build deposit, had the finance approved and just waiting delivery. Build week is 15/2/16 and delivery for March (hopefully). Now, I test drove the vehicle once, the wife test drove it once and we both agreed it fitted all of our requirements and needs but I’m starting to have doubts. I don’t know what it is but part of me feels like the Golf R isn’t the car for me. I don't feel like I got enough out of my test drive and wish I'd spent more time trying things out. Over the past couple weeks since I ordered, I’ve been following this forum closely but also looking at what else is out there. I’ve spoken to Mercedes and BMW and had drives in equivalent models that were both super fun and super fast but I just don’t remember getting that same feeling when I was in the R. We drove a LOT of cars over the past few months trying to pick the right car. I personally got my short list and drove a Fiesta ST, Golf R, Polo GTI and then compared with the wife and ended up ordered the Golf R. I realise now that the Golf R is the next level up from the 3 door hatchbacks so I'm starting to think I should maybe look at what else is on the R's level. Since then I’ve also driven an A45 AMG and the new BMW 340i. The 340i was my DREAM car but it’s just beyond my reach financially as in order to have that I’d need to run 2 cars to appease the wife. I haven’t driven a M135i yet but I’m contemplating having a go. The A45 was INSANE, it was fast and aggressive it had all the pops and noise that I would want and some but at 50k it's also beyond me right now! Both times the salesman specifically showed me the difference in power between ‘comfort’ and ‘sport’. But in the R the girl had it in ‘Race’ right away, it was fun and fast but I don’t remember it being everything I had hoped. After ready things like if you turn it off and its in race it’ll actually be in drive when you turn it on again - we stopped at a full station before I got to drive so I have a feeling it might not have been in true 'race' mode. I don’t know I just have my doubts that I got to experience the whole car - I definitly didn't play with Driver profile selection or mess around between comfort, sport and eco etc... or try manual paddles. Technology such as navigation and Dab etc.. is not my priority as I do all of that through my phone. The priority for me is drive, handling and seat comfort. I don’t know what to do. I ordered through a broker and that dealer is about an hour away, I phone them today, explained and the guy (not my salesman) didn’t have an R for me to re-test just so I’m 100% sure I’m making the right choice. The few local VW’s around me either won’t let me drive one without putting down a deposit OR I asked them to price match my broker and they said no so they know I've already ordered elsewhere. For me, it’s not the cost of the car thats the problem, I’m well within my budget on the R’s finance but I do understand it’s a big commitment for 3 years and would like to know that I’m getting the right car for my money and I won’t be in the same situation I am in now where I want something different in a year from now. I personally NEED a car that is 5 doors, biggish boot with foldable seats for my work gear, comfortable to drive around town and on motorways, easy to use for my wifes daily commute of 6 miles each way (split equally between 30mph town and 60mph a roads). But then also something that I can drive hard when I want too, will make a lot of noise and generally wipe the floor with most other vehicles at the traffic light GP (I do this for fun and drive fast and to the speed limits as much as possible as I enjoy driving). Something that has the mid-range power so that when I drop gears to overtake the car responds and allows to make manoeuvres. It also has to be around the £30k mark as thats what I can afford with my budget on a PCP over 3 years. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas how to get a drive in an R without hiring one? Do I buy the car or put it on hold and start shopping again? Is the R the right car for me?
  2. Hi all, First time poster here. Not sure if this is necessarily the right place to post this, apologies if not. Coming up to new car time now, Mid Feb order date, and I'm stuck between the M135i and the Golf R. Have test driven both and to be honest both are exceptional cars in their own right. For me its essentially going to come down to the price. Have been on the BabyBMW forums and got a quote from a resident dealer over there of £1500 down and £320 pcm on a PCP deal (with a couple of optional extras chucked in). I am just wondering if any of you knowledgable folk know if I am likely to get a better deal than this on the Golf? Either lease or PCP, not bothered either way. Lastly, what are people's feelings on living with the Golf? Does the power still excite after having it for a while? Thanks in advance! Sam
  3. Hi all, looking for some opinions on financing a Golf R. Love my mk6 manual GTI but I'm after a DSG now because I'm rubbish at gear changing and I want AWD because Scotland. I'm pretty thick when it comes to financial matters, so I'd appreciate it if anyone could tell me if I'm totally wrong about PCP deals here: For simplicity's sake let's say the R will be 30k and I trade my car in for 10k. That leaves 20k outstanding. I pay 10k over 3 or 4 years or whatever. I have 10k remaining. My options then are: A: Hand the car back and walk or cycle away. So I've just pissed 20k up the wall including a car I actually owned. Why didn't I just sell my car privately and lease an R in that case? B: Part exchange - eh? What am I actually bringing to the table here? The two thirds of the R I've paid off? And is that actually one third of an R, after the remaining third I still owe is deducted? C: Pay the remainder and keep the car. Does that need to be paid in a lump sum? I think I find option B most confusing. What is my equity at the point of trade-in? Anyway, thanks for any thoughts!
