  1. That makes which of us the pedant? (I'm laughing ) People make big purchase decisions based on misunderstandings and misinformation. The forum counterbalances that. I was pleasantly surprised to discover my ex-demo R had headlight washers. Then gutted after discovering 'detailing'........... Horses for courses and knowledge is power and, sometimes - less is more IMHO The basic car is nigh on perfect - depending on your personal requirements / circumstances.
  2. Quoting the Carwow article: .....the winter pack (which adds headlight washers, heated front seats and heated windscreen washer jets) seems a popular (and cheap) option at £250. Headlight washers are standard on the R.
  3. Have changed cable which has solved an iPhone 5S connection problem. Old Cable - white collar New Cable - green Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. My limited understanding and happy to be corrected: Advanced Phone Prep The USB is just power. The location in the centre arm rest allows the phone to key into the car aerial utilising an electro magnetic field (?). Phone links into infotainment via BT for calls / music accessed via Phone / Media buttons respectively. Charge point If no Adv Phone Prep - all as above without the benefits of EMF to car aerial and with a visible cable MDI A cable connection optimised for Apple providing charging and infotainment control of the plugged in device. Improved sound quality and track artwork displayed. HTH
  5. MDI: Charge Point: Advanced Phone Preparation: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. .......should add: The 1.2 TSi is a Mk6 (double Din radio unit) - easily modded. The R is a Mk7 Further info on the 'value' (or otherwise) of integrated SatNav.
  7. Cable allows you to charge phone and calls work but not music. I think music on device would work but I don't have any, all my music is via spotify. The problem is - you are connecting through the MDI cable. If you have Advanced Phone Prep (USB in the armrest) use that. If not - pop a USB adapter in the charger point. HTH
  8. I believe you will get the 'Device Error' message if you have no music in iTunes on the iPhone that you are MDI cable connecting. The car system can only navigate music stored on the phone - not spotify / 'in-App' music AFAIK.
  9. I have now tested it and it has resolved the problem. See here. So, not a firmware issue after all. Hardware - cable.
  10. I have replaced my MDI lightening adapter cable and this has solved problems I was having connecting an iPhone 5S. Old part - white colar New part - green Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. TMC issue. Bringing this to the top again. Well documented problems on the M25 northern section earlier. TMC information out of date between Hatfield and M25 on A1. Showing blocked but road clear. Has previously taken me onto a blocked North Orbital. Where is it sourcing it's information?: FM radio? Roadside sensors? The system doesn't work very well
  12. ...................... Is this mismatch because the manual refers to a 2WD car and the R is AWD? Is TCS an integral part of ESC in AWD? Nothing definitive but: VW phoned me back today and, basically, confirmed "what you have is the manual". So, in reality and has been stated on other threads - The Forum is the manual Regarding disarming safety systems if you get completely bogged in snow / can't quite crest an icy hill scenario: In my manual R - 1 press disarms TCS - a longer, subsequent press disarms ESC I have done this 'on the move' and where safe, without a problem, to confirm that it is possible. Being a manual, there is no 'launch' mode to have to consider and having not used that, WRT DSG, I know nothing Regards
  13. Well I had two 'nice attention' experiences today: 1) (I think this counts?) Driving along a classic winding country lane with tall hedgerows either side at about 40. A Goshawk swoops out of the hedgerow on my right, in front of me, and proceeds to 'lead' me for a good mile and a half down the lane taking a look over it's shoulder every now and then. Peeled off at the last second when we finally met traffic coming in the other direction. Maybe it was the R daytime lights or the look of the car but I am sure we were both admiring each other for the best part of two minutes. 2) After getting the PDR work done on my bonnet due to a less successful encounter with a feathered friend, I finally got to the dealership today to have the paint buffed out where the tooling work had been done. I left the car with them all day as their bodywork specialist, Andy, was very busy and had to fit things around jobs on other cars. He'd headed off by the time I arrived but the Valeter came over for a chat when he saw me inspecting the car before driving off. They all take a great deal of pride in what they do, and it was great to talk to someone who really wanted to help and impart their knowledge to help get the best result for my R. So big for that!
  14. We've done a bit of car changing recently to get our oldest driving and have ended up with 2 Golfs: 1.2TSi family car and the R. As mobiles are such an integral part of any teenagers life these days, I had exactly that Kenwood unit installed in the TSi for the bluetooth and easy sat-nav so no-one would have to be juggling their 'phones in the car. In fact, I did a firmware update on it today as Kenwood had just published one on their website. Easily done with a USB stick. I have used this company for satnav installations in the past and rate them very highly. They recommended the current Pioneer unit for what I was trying to do. For various reasons, I went against their advice and had VW install the Kenwood. This was, primarily, to avoid warranty issues with various people working on the car (a VW towbar loom was being installed at the same time). It does what I need it to do but a few observations: It's slow It's nice to have the parking sensors integrated into the display. The Pioneer may do this? Most manufacturers have climate control imaging (+ reversing cameras if you want that). The VW style button surround is nice and makes it look integrated. The Discover nav in the R is much better. The Mk7 Golf is a step change in systems integration over previous generations, making after-market stuff onerously difficult / expensive to fit. If you are looking to economise - the basic MDI display in the R has bluetooth, I believe, and your phone will be capable of SatNav at least on a par with the Kenwood. HTH
