This has been known for a while though a lot of reviews questioned the extra money over the GTi given the increased performance or limited increase in performance, torque figures were not too far off from each other and if we are all honest GTi is more than you need for the road in any case. R wins in the wet where it'll be able to put the power down where as the GTi will sit there spinning.
I agree with what you are saying though you don't expect to buy the top range model and then for VW to start releasing lesser models with almost the same figures. I'm currently waiting for my R and although I keep telling myself I must have the range topper and the best my head knows that this isn't true, with all the uncertainty of "jazzed" up models appearing at the end of the year im considering my position and whether or not I should cancel and see what happens.
That on top of all the latest talks of resale values, lease cars flooding the market in 2 years (ridiculous to offer such a deal, only because I didn't know anything about it).
All I know is I want out of my 2013 MK2 TT diesel, which I still love but don't do the mileage for a diesel 6000 a year, into a petrol car, whether this remains an R we'll see.
