Random Error lights/codes

Been  almost a year since I posted and the R has been impressing me daily with its abilities.

 

However just as I felt wed bonded its throwing a multitude of errors

 

I pulled the reports with obd11 and they are almost identical the last twice its happened, Its intermittent and I can't find a particular circumstance that triggers it

It was a bit old so I put a shiny new Exide AGM in, and recoded the battery accordingly (Fleece)   For a couple of days it behaved, but its now back again   I'm currently thinking an electrical issue, maybe ground?, loose connection? Alternator?   As they are intermittent, too wide spread and seem to be signal issue related rather than a particular problem.   Anyone experience similar and point me in the right direction?   thanks in advance

hmm.............. I would prefer to see a copy of the UNEDITED (meaning absolutely NO changes ) SCAN report for this car - instead of the error-code snippets in your post! Also, it would be more helpful if the SCAN report included Freeze-frame data that is currently resident in module fault memory!

 

Anyhow, with the caveat of the limited diagnostic data data in your error-rich post, my hunch is that the a good-place to start your investigations is the rear right wheel speed sensor (called G44 in the wiring diagram) . This is a 2 x pin device that consists of a toothed wheel which lives inside the wheel hub housing and an electromagnetic induction-type sensor (it's a simple wire-coil and a magnet)  that's bolted onto the outer part of housing - see picture below. The two parts are separated by an air-gap and the sensor is coated with a special high-temperature paste to mitigate detritus in the wheel-well affecting speed pulse counts.

 

 

As you will agree, accurate vehicle speed measurement affects many, many functions in a modern car -- so it's not unusual for multiple error codes to be generated when these sensors go pear-shape.

 

And in your case, there are a couple of specific mentions about the rear-right speed sensor in your error-code list

 

I'm not sure that this is the ONLY problem with this car and yes, a healthy battery is assumed- but worth starting your diagnostic search here - IMO, of course!!

@markiii: Thanks for the SCAN report.

 

As mentioned in my first reply, I also suggest that you invoke Freeze-frame facility against your OBD11 account. If you are not aware, the error monitoring protocols that are imposed by the vehicle industry Standards include a bunch of data the records the conditions in the car when the fault occurs. This is called "Freeze-frame" and the modules in this car have stored this additional information for each error-code in your SCAN. I have no idea why OBD11 does NOT extract Freeze-frame data as default in its SCAN reports - but it doesn't (VCDS does this as default)! Maybe read HERE to activate Freeze-frame with OBD11

 

Anyhow - If you look at the modules that are complaining in your SCAN, I hope that you can see a link between a problematic wheel-speed sensor and the primary function of the module. By this I mean that ALL the unhappy modules have a functional relationship to the car's running-gear which is where the 4 x wheel speed-sensor signals are generated!! If you had Freeze-frame data in your SCAN, I strongly suspect that the date/time stamps on the individual error-codes wound be aligned!!

 

Also note that there are NO low-volt error messages in your SCAN report - so this is unlikely to be a problem with the battery rail-voltage, or alternator (albeit, the possibility cannot be entirely dismissed)

 

Bottom-line = I suggest that you grab a multi-meter, remove the rear right-side wheel sensor and test it by waving a spanner near the "business-end". If the sensor is healthy, it should induce a small voltage pulse on the 2 x pins as the iron in the spanner is moved close to the wire-coil/magnet inside the sensor

So far I've had the Mrs drive around whilst I monitor all 4 ABS signals, and they have consistently been tracking each other on the chart.

 

I've yet to figure out how to save the chart for future use, and I'll have a look at the freeze frame as well

 

New ABS sensor is also on its way!

@markiii: hmm......... finding intermittent faults is very problematic because by definition, they are "intermittent"!!

 

Without intending any offense, "New ABS sensor is also on its way" is perhaps a tad premature without first undertaking basic investigations like my suggested "spanner waving" test.

 

Diagnostics is in essence an information gathering exercise that ultimately informs a decision as to a way forward! The better the diagnostic data, the more accurate the decision - but there can never be an iron-clad guarantee!!

 

In this case, there is strong evidence that the cause is the sensor - but I would have preferred further tests to obviate other related equipment like the sensor wiring loom and/or connectors before throwing money at a solution!!

I completely agree. Alas the wife whose car it is just a smidgeon impatient!

 

I managed to find the sensor on Amazon prime for £31 and free returns so it was a case of quickest route to resolution and least amount of earache.

 

so far so good. Whilst I'm not 100% confident, the amount of journeys its done since swapping the sensor without incident is looking promising.

Mark: I entirely understand and your priorities are admirable! I'm not joking -  I truly believe that this non-diagnostic imperative from a "current life-time partner" should ALWAYS take precedence!
