  2. Thanks Rebecca. That was quick - you got nothing better to do on a nice day like this ?
  3. Do you need to switch the box on everytime you start the car or is it fit and forget once you've configured it to the settings that you want ? I'm tempted but I don't really want yet another button that I forget to push before driving (like the stop start)
  4. I switched from an RS3 8P to the 7R back in November after 2 years in the RS3. Things I prefered about the RS3 are :- 1. The sound. You can't help but love the sound from the 5 pot. It makes the R sound like a wasp in a jar by comparison. 2. The exclusivity. There are (were) only 750 in the UK. 3. The gearbox - 7 gears - less "urgent" on motorways when cruising. 4. The sport button - better throttle response in auto without 6K RPM gear changes. In the R you can't have one without the other. Things I prefer about the 7R (DSG). 1. The handling - far better than the RS3 in any situation, therefore more enjoyable to drive. 2. DCC - wasn't available on the 8P. 3. More tech and control over it through the MIB. 4. Less conspicuous - not so much attention from the "baseball cap" brigade. 5. The price - £10k cheaper like for like. In summary the RS3 felt more exclusive but the 7R is a better drivers car. However if the extra 10K wasn't an issue the 8V would probably be my choice.
  5. I agree that a 7th gear with a manual box might be a bit of overkill due to the number of shifts required. What I was trying to say is that a 7th gear in the DSG would give more flexibility. You could choose a bit more ecomomy or not without dropping out of the max torque range. You could do 3k at 80 in 6th if you wanted or 80 at 2k in 7th since they are both at peak torque. I had an RS3 previously and the 7th gear on the motorway definately made cruising less stessful. My guess is that VW will notice the same and R420 will turn up with a 7 speed box.
  6. "weedy rev-range" - no, I want exactly the opposite. I want to utilise the whole rev range by choosing what gear gives me the revs I want in order to suit the situation I'm in. i.e if I'm sitting in traffic on a motorway I might want to choose to run at 2k revs, conserve fuel and use it when I'm able to safely let loose at the top end of the range. More gears give you more options. Anyway, I know its Friday night and your mum lets you stay up drinking Red Bull and watching old episodes of Top Gear because you don't have school tomorrow but isn't it time you were in bed ?
  7. Considering the fact that the 7R reaches peak torque at just under 2K revs/min it seems to me that it could do with a 7th gear so that your not doing 3K revs/min at 80 mph in 6th (or 2.5k at 70 mph). 3K always seems a little too "urgent" for comfortable cruising on the motorway. (and before anybody does the "The UK limit on a motorway is 70 therefore it shoudn't be a problem" bit can I just say, please don't, unless you can say, hand on heart, you've never been over 70 in your R )
  8. I give R400 full marks for persistence (and a thick skin). Regardless of negative remarks and badgering he never bites and is still as enthusiastic as ever.
  9. Colin, Jonny, hi, I recognise your userids from the RS3OC forum (and Colin's avatar). I'd quite happily have replaced the Mk1 RS3 with a MK2 if I hadn't been looking at close to £50k with options for a hatchback. Instead I realised that the Mk7 R provides 95% of what the RS provides for £10K less (or £20k less if I could find a good low milage demo), with the added bonus of better handling. I managed to pick up a loaded (DSG, DCC, Leather,Sunroof, Prets, Dico Nav Pro, Dynaudio) 2015 R in my favorite colour - LSG, with 3.7k on the clock, for only £8.5k on top of the traded in RS3. It would have been rude not to. What are your reasons for swapping to the R ?
  10. Sorry Rebecca ..... thats should have read "Thanks Guys and Girls, "
  11. Thanks Guys, I've just swapped from a Mk1 RS3 where I could push the sport button to open the flaps and sharpen the throttle without effecting the S-tronic. Seems in the R "Engine" means "Engine and DSG". At least I now know what the options are now. I'll have a play for a few weeks until I feel comfortable with the setup.
  12. Hi all, I've searched the forum but can't find an obvious answer to this. I've had my Mk7 R for 3 days and played with the "individual" mode settings to try and get the car as I like it. What I'm trying to achive is a more rapid throttle response and exhaust flaps open without putting the gearbox into sport mode too. The Engine setting option in "Individual", when set to Sport mode seems to do both. Is there a way to have the engine in sport and the gearbox in normal ? Thanks. Cheers, Cyan.

    New Mk7 R Owner

Hi, I've just bought a Mk7 Golf R so I thought I'd join the forum and introduce myself. Looks like a friendly (mostly) and informative community so it should be fun. I'm planning on "lurking" for a little while until I read up as much as I can so I don't start topics that have already been discussed. I'm originally from a "Scooby" backgroud (7 in a row) but switched to the VAG brand a couple of years ago when I was tempted by an RS3. Looking forward to bantering with you guys/girls. Cheers, Cyan.
