Battery Coding

Hi All

Has anyone coded their own battery on replacement?

I have replaced with a Bosch 096 AGM, and based on research used VOA as manufacturer (same battery as Varta), changed the serial number, checked that the rating is correct (70 Ah), but what selection is appropriate for an AGM battery - Binary AGM or Fleece? Seem to be conflicting views......

Many thanks

Thanks very much.

The Varta link below refers to AGM batteries as Fleece, so confused!

Maintenance-free and leakproof AGM batteries (“AGM” stands for “Absorbent Glass Mat”, because the electrolyte is bound in an absorbent glass fleece) are powerful batteries for automatic start-stop systems and have very good cold start characteristics. Thanks to the cycle stability of an AGM battery, a warm engine can be switched off and started again several times at short intervals, without the risk of difficulties when restarting. They also provide sufficient reserves to continue to supply electrical consumers during the frequent stops and still guarantee reliable starting.

This is the issue, no-one seems to have an evidence technical view...... I have used Binary AGM (their is not simple AGM selection, but based on the above from the Varta website, perhaps Fleece is more appropriate....?

Thanks again.

I agree, there seems to be very little technical info supported by anything except personal opinion on this particular issue, but from what I've read (and I did read a lot of different sources), I believe Fleece is more appropriate than Binary, but only based on the fact that I could find some info on Fleece, and zero authoritative info on what AGM-Binary actually is.

You could try contacting the battery manufacturer, tell them the options you have, and ask them which is most appropriate ?  And then tell us (please ?)

Just curious, why did you choose AGM Binary rather than fleece ?

Because I'm an idiot 😞 .  After doing some research on the web I finally found this on the Ross Tech website "I believe "Fleece" is the appropriate setting for a standard AGM"

In my case, I selected BINARY-AGM which has been confirmed by my battery manufacturer "LITE BLOX".

I was using "lithium ions" at the beginning since the battery I bought is lithium battery so I just selected that with no doubt. But, they have manual released recently and I found out that they recommended "AGM" as battery technology so I tried to modfiy accordingly but instead of "AGM" I could only find BINARY-AGM. I sent email to LITE BLOX to ask and they confirmed "BINARY-AGM" that is the one I should use.

According to Uwe, "Fleece" is what should be used for regular (non-spiral) AGM batteries:

"My understanding is that's the terminology used by German battery manufacturers for normal AGM batteries.  -Uwe-"

I am still no closer to understanding what batteries  "AGM - Binary" is for

Edit:  I may have found some useful info at last.  It seems that "AGM-Binary" = "BiPolar lead acid" or "BILAPS" batteries.  These have a different design and construction, can last a lot longer, and can be smaller & much lighter for the same capacity compared with regular (Fleece) AGM batteries.  Sounds promising, to say the least.....  I haven't seen any being currently marketed in quantity for cars (yet), but obviously VW are catering for possible future use:

https://advancedbatteryconcepts.com/technology/

https://www.science.gov/topicpages/b/bipolar+lead-acid+batteries

BILAPS is the acronym for Bipolar Lead-Acid Power Source. In the 6th framework programme “BILAPS research project ENK6-CT-2001-00544”, supported by the European Union, CENTURION AKKU was responsible for the development of the active mass and for the assembly process.
The objective of the project was the development of a low-cost high power battery for applications in hybrid vehicles and in 42 Volt systems.

The main advantage of the bipolar battery is the high capacity it provides given its low weight. This low weight is possible thanks to the exclusion of all the lead components that do not contribute to the delivery of current. Examples include grids and cell connectors. The structure of the bipolar battery can be compared to that of a fuel cell: the stacking of cells provides the compression for the mechanical rigidity. By using only current-providing lead, weight is reduced by about 50%. This doubles the specific power (Watt per kilo)!
The advantages of a bipolar lead-acid battery compared to other technologies such as Lithium-Ion, Lithium-Polymer or Nickel-metal-hydride are:
- the relatively low price of lead,
- the proven recycling system for lead batteries (>95% for starter batteries and 100% for industrial batteries),
- low-cost production technology in mass production.

I hope the above info will dispel some of the current confusion re AGM-Binary.

I am now much more confident that "Fleece" is the correct coding for any AGM batteries we are currently buying.

Thanks. Battery manufacturer not interested - placed in the too difficult pile!

It seems that certain Audi RS models are fitted with AGM batteries from factory, so would would really help would be to see what setting they are on.....
