Propshaft Rear Donut / Ring

Hi all,

My rear propshaft donut is perished due to experiencing wheel hop when my transfer box wasn’t working. Got the replacement donut to put on.

Does anyone have any experience replacing this part ? Does the exhaust have to come off or can I make do with just unbolting the donut and pushing the prop back abit where it attaches to the rear diff.

Thanks in advance

D

Managed to get the new donut on. Straightforward but needed some persuading to get it off the propshaft.

Thankfully got it just in time, the thing was gonna pop off eventually. Managed to split the thing apart with little force. Can only imagine if the metal ring popped off mid journey, would be looking at a bigger bill.

Another thing to look out for when mileage creeps up.

Took out for a drive afterwards and things seem a lot more stable.

Part number is : 5Q0521307

Hi, how did you diagnose transfer case failure ? I’m having traction problems, wheel hop under hard acceleration. I bought a prop shaft rear coupling thinking it was that but it’s in decent condition. Haldexrepairs website mentions jacking the front of the car up & videoing the prop to see if it rotates when engine is started & driving the front wheels which I have done. The prop turns, but it’s a little erratic, as if the transfer bevel gear is slipping slightly. Any help will be really appreciated.

Put the car up on a hoist, select P (engine off), grasp the propshaft with some large muti-grips and try to turn it.  If it rotates (may be quite stiff) then your transfer case (bevel box) is shagged because the pressed on gear is slipping on the shaft.  If it won't rotate despite your best efforts then look for a Haldex problem.

Thanks for your reply, I’ll try that.

Like @gregozedobe said that’s probably the best way to check.

My prop shaft wouldn’t spin at all with all 4 wheels off the ground traction off and in drive. That’s how I knew mine was completely gone.

I’d do the cheapest fix first unless you’ve already done so. Haldex service, get the kit and service it yourself. Make sure have VCDS to run the basic settings to adapt the pump. I did this when I bought the car a year ago and started getting traction issues which solved it.

I had AWD Mechanical Malfunction faults on VCDS both times I had AWD issues.

Click on my name and read my post on my transfer box failing.

I did what was suggested last week, jacking the rear of the car up & trying to turn the prop shaft with large pipe grips & I couldn’t get it to move at all, so I bought a Ross Tech VCDS cable & did some tests as described by Matt at Haldex repairs. I emailed him the results & he replied that he doubted pump failure. Back to square one, bought some large stilsons & jacked the back wheels up, prop shaft turned with ease (fronts on the ground & in Park).

I’m now on the lookout for a used transfer case & I’ve found a low mileage off a Skoda, part number 0CN 409 053 AD. Before I go ahead and buy it, can anyone confirm that this part will fit my 2015 R dsg. DaveGR mentions previously above that it’ll fit, just want to make sure before I bite the bullet.

About to do the donut on mine. Is it easy enough on the drive. Does it need new bolts. When you say took some effort to get off hiw did you acheive that. Thanks.

Late reply but for anyone looking to tackle
Its doable. Undo the 3 bolts on propshaft that connect to the rear diff, undo the 2 middle bolts that hold propshaft in place. Dogbone bolts off, push engine forward and put a piece of wood between gearbox and subframe to move engine as far forward as you can. This still wasn’t enough room to get it out the rear diff, so used a pry bar to get it further back to free it up. Then just do it all in reverse.

I had new bolts supplied with mine. Part was Febi Bilstein.

I ended up having a local independent vw garage fit mine along with the transfer case as I’d got covid & then went away for a week. I supplied the garage with new bolts for everything that was removed. I had read about donuts bolts shearing after reusing them on Audi forums so for what they cost, it’s not worth the risk.

Hey everyone, does anyone happen to have the part numbers for the bolts for the donut/flex disc?  The donut number is : 5Q0521307 but I need the part number for the bolts associated with that particular part.
