Just to add to the comments, I have just organised insurance for my first Golf R, coming in at £650/year £300 compulsory excess with Admiral. This is on a brand new Mk7.5 5dr DSG in north east england.
I'm 32 and have been driving since I was 18 (6yrs NC's due to work schemes etc), the car is in a high insurance bracket so this (for me) is the most I've paid to insure a vehicle aside from the first couple of years when I had a 1.2 Corsa. My advice echo's the above, learn to drive first by having a few years under your belt - get used to driving in the dark, snow/ice, busy motorways etc. I'm nervous enough about picking my new car up and I've done all this, I think nowadays there's so many distractions with infotainment, features etc that its very easy to loose concentration when you've just passed, couple that to the fact you may well have people in the car distracting you too.
Learn in a banger (the sense of freedom after not being able to drive outweighs the novelty of the car you're actually in, for me it did) save money, experience the road and then see whats available.
