  1. Thanks, Well I have had mine 2 months now and really enjoying it, few pics of her below.. I have fitted the M performance rear diffuser and the black kidney grills but other then that not changed anything else which is rare for me... My fiance and I went to Bath last week it was a 320 mile round trip and the 440i averaged 41mpg there and back 20 mins of A roads, motorways were cruise control between 75-80mph. 1st photo is new grills 2nd photo is grills fitted 3rd photo is m performance rear diffuser fitted 4th is post wash 5th is the lip spoiler currently mat black unsure whether or not to have it paint matched to the car... whats your thoughts?
  2. I ran TVS Stage 3 TCU tune with unicorn stage 1 ECU and it was absolutely excellent. I dont think you will go wrong with TVS, REVO or APR very good companies that know their stuff.
  3. 1 & 2. No doubt they know what's best the likes of VW, BMW MERC etc will have some top engineers designing their cars.. but they are always going to have a top marketing team also. For example the B58 engine from BMW, its used in models from 140i, 240i, 340i 440i etc at 326bhp, the same engine is also in the new M340i making 380 ish BHP, its also in the Supra at similar power. I guess what I'm saying is these engines are designed to be cost effective for manufacturers but also versatile to use across the range, I believe the Mini countryman hybrid is essentially the first 3 cylinders of the B58. I think BMW have been smart in designing what seems to be a reliable modular engine which can be used across pretty much the whole range with a variety of performance outputs. I don't think its as simple as map it and go... to make sure everything is healthy and "safe" you need to run it on a dyno, take logs, check timing check fuelling etc. If you need to replace the turbo to make more power then that's what you need to do don't just push the OEM one to its limits and then wonder why it blew up. I am not sure if I answered these questions but I guess what im trying to say is there are some engines out there which are under utilised, but that doesn't mean all the other bolts ons (fuel pump, turbo, intercooler etc) are. 3. I think that's impossible to tell without data/logs, some cars were built on a Friday afternoon unfortunately. 4. God knows cars are making more and more power as time has gone on, the result of this is OEM parts "have" to be better or their cars would be totally unreliable, make no mistake however, they are still trying to achieve this reliability on a budget. The B58 comes with a forged crank shaft but cast pistons, you can guess what's likely to let go first when you start building more boost and making more power... 5. I think third party tuning has gotten better, plenty of really good knowledgeable tuners out there that run logs and ensure the engines health as well as good power. 6. My 2016 MK 7 Golf R was stage 1 mapped with Unicorn and had Stage 3 TVS DSG tune, pikey R600 intake and it was awesome, I would do it again. I have a BMW 440i, it runs 326BHP new, a stage 1 remap will see about 420bhp, I will be doing that once my warranty is up. 7. I have been a member on this forum for about 3 years. I can count on one hand the number of "my cars blown up" threads on one hand, people only post when they have problems, hassle free running is expected so goes largely unreported. Worth noting any tuning/performance increases are risky, in-fact just buying a standard performance car is risky in its own right when you compare a Dacia Sandero to a BMW M4 competition... the BMW driver is always going to be nervous of any problems. The Dacia driver could probably go 4 years without getting it serviced and it would be fine. BHP and Torque cause stress/strain and wear you want to go fast you better be prepared to pay but hope you dont have to. Just my thoughts Dan

With the DSG box sounds like a nice car. I was stage 1 with some air intake bits and the car really flew I would recommend. If interested I have a couple of bits in the classifieds, the pedal box in particular is a mod you don't realise you needed until you have it haha.
  6. Mine was stage 1 mapped with Unicorn and had a TVS stage 3 TCU tune. I never put it on the dyno but I imagine about 360-370 BHP. I found it really nice to drive with the 4 motion drive system and a good set of boots then next to no wheel spin, point and shoot, I also had the pedal box and the silicone intake hose with turbo elbow and a drop in filter. Verdict, stage 1 is perfect.
  7. Hi, Yeah the current tyres are a seat of goodyear eagle f1 runflats with just a few mm of tread left on the rears. I will change them for PS4S once they're down to the legal limit, they should get me through the winter. I live right on the south coast by the sea and its extremely flat so we dont get much ice/snow if any. I wont be considering a remap until at least next summer but probably not until the spring/summer after that as I am currently covered by the BMW warranty. I do get some traction issues almost every time I put my foot down, even if I'm being gentle but I guess that is just the nature of the beast. Other then that it's an absolute pleasure to drive. I had a genuine boot spoiler, diffuser and kidney girlls turn up this week, just waiting to get the spoiler colour matched but ill fit the girlls and diffuser over the Christmas period and give it a good wash too.
  8. Well a little update, I am really enjoying the 440i, feels like the engine is being restricted and thats because, well it is... the B58 is a pleasure to drive and the car feels really well built with no squeaks or rattles! I am itching to remap for 420BHP but holding off at the moment.
  9. Morning, My personal preference in terms of R spec after owning one for nearly 3 years.. I bought a late Mk 7 DSG in 2020, if I was to do it all again now I'd defiantly buy a 7.5 DSG, I think the fuel consumption on a run is significantly better with the 7th gear and the gearbox is generally really reliable and performs well. Colour is down to preference but in terms of spec on the inside, leather seats with heated front seats is always a must for me, the Dynaudio system is good, keyless entry and keyless start is extremely handy, my BMW now is not keyless entry but is keyless start although its only small things I really do miss the keyless entry. Other musts for me would be the Pro nav system(bigger display) with android auto/car play, also with the 7.5 you would get the digital dash which I think is really nice. If you can find one with an Akrapovic in budget that was an option from new certainly on the 7 not sure about the 7.5 but very sought after. Good luck in your search!
  10. I have to say it is a whole new driving experience and one I am being very cautious with at the moment! The Golf was point and shoot which was excellent, the 440i requires some discipline with the go faster pedal no doubt and while the wheel spin has brought a smile to my face I can see how it can go wrong so easily.
  11. Lovely car matey, detailer has done a great job too! Enjoy it.
  12. Thanks, really enjoying it so far but the wet slipper roads + RWD is resulting in a lot of wheel-spin and not much power being put down which is the opposite to the Golf, but still fun.
  13. I purchased the MK 7 R back in early 2020, almost 3 years ago and what a pleasure it was with a number of extras from the factory, keyless entry & start, Dynaudio, pro nav, leather interior... I made a few changed myself in the first 12 months, JUDD T311R wheel in gunmetal grey wrapped in Michelin PS4S tyres, lowered 15mm on Eibach springs, resonator delete (not sure if I regret this or not to be honest) NCZ works paddle shifters, Ram air intake hose, elbow and panel filter and lastly a DTUK pedal box (essential) and lastly a stage 1 Unicorn ECU map paired with the TVS Stage 3 gearbox map. The Golf went on Saturday gone and was replaced with a 2019 BMW F32 440i Coupe in Metallic Black Sapphire, extras from the factory includes the 19" wheels, upgraded M sport brake calipers & discs front and rear, Harmon and Kardon audio system, Digital cockpit, reversing camera, 360 degree camera and bird eye view camera, brushes aluminium trim interior. Car comes with the ZF 8 speed gearbox, sadly not a dual clutch like the Golf but it does surprisingly well for a torque converter gearbox, the 8 speed does wonders for the fuel economy as I had 42mpg on the way home from picking her up crusing at 77 on the motorway! Plans for the Beemer, for now just exterior styling, booking it in for a proper detail with paint correction as there is some swirls and minor paint defects. I have ordered a genuine M performance boot lip spoiler, I am on the look out for an M performance rear diffuser and a set of exhaust tips. Following this I will likely have the ECU and TCU remapped once the warranty has expired. Couple of pics below if you're interested
  14. Had this on my car, it will likely be one of your bulbs has blown as others have said. Really easy to swap out, unfortunately the two cornering bulbs are in series it seems so if one goes you lose the circuit for both. Had mine go twice in 3 years so fairly common sure the cold hasn't helped.
  15. The RS3's have really held their money well too I think. Especially the 400bhp facelift models. New Beemer came home today, car is black has some light swirls and a couple small scratches I want to get done so looking to get her detailed as first order of business! Pic below for those interested Has a strange private plate on it which will be coming off as soon as its registered in my name, actually a 2019 model. Sounds good on start up but pretty quiet after that, probably down to the cat + GPF combo... Also not as quick as the R off the line and it spins up the rears pretty easily! It's a brute once rolling though and the power delivery from the B58 is really smooth.
  16. Lovely cars! I have reserved a Beemer now, pick up Saturday, just finished putting the Golf back to stock tonight I am going to miss her!
  17. Hi mate its a 2016 and done 64k miles. Has Dynaudio, keyless entry and start, pro nav, leather heated seats, DSG, 19" JUDD T311R, pedalbox +, stage 1 unicorn with TVS TCU STAGE 3 map, resonator delete. Been a great car, it was a difficult making the decision to part with it. I wanted something a bit more"grown up" and I appreciate thats subjective but I feel like the golf mapped stage 1 with aftermarket wheel and a cracks and bangs map has me living my late teens and early 20's which is fine! but I just wanted something a bit more refined, I also have a RWD itch I want to scratch. If I had waited a couple more year I probably could of gotten in an M4 competition but I'm 28 now and in a couple years I could have a sprog or two and the M4 dream would go down the drain. I almost went for a BMW 240i but decided against it because I felt like it was the same kind of car as the Golf, small pointy and "chavy" haha I really don't mean that in a bad way. I knew I wanted to B58 engine so a 40i was a must and the 4 series has the looks for me. The 440i B58 is well supported mod wise with a stage 1 taking it to 420bhp (same as stock M4) + a downpipe and stage 2 map you're looking at 450 BHP with a gearbox map for less then £1500. The B58 engine has a mix of forged and cast components (I believe everything is forged other then the pistons which are cast but I may be wrong on that, seems really reliable and refined. All of the above is just my opinion and im under no illusion that in the case of pounds for smiles the Golf is still king, 360-370 BHP for £18k with heated seats upgraded audio, 4wd, leather, adaptive cruise. I really will miss it.
  18. changed the 4 plugs last night and shes running like a dream now I'm glad to say however this whole thing has given me itchy feet and I think I am going to Part Ex the Golf are head for a 240i or 440i BMW (dont give me too much grief :D) I have really enjoyed the ownership of this car and after nearly 3 years this is easily the best car I've ever owned and I wouldn't be surprised if im back in a mk8, 8.5 or 9 in years to come. I will have some bits and bobs off my Golf going up for sale on the classified in the coming days for those of you who might be interested. JUDD T311R 19" Alloy wheels in gunmetal grey Ramair Silicone intake hose + turbo elbow + panel filter DTUK Pedal box+ Unicorn Stage 1 high torque 99 octane map software on a tablet purchased directly from Unicorn. VW Golf MK 7 illuminated paddle shifters in black Like I said sales will only be made through the classifieds but let me know if you might be interested in these bits. I appreciate all the help and info I have received on this form over the years, I am less active now but I do pop in for a nose regularly so speak soon and thank-you.
  19. Thanks for the info, I am still having this issue but I cant get it to replicate exactly as in the original post and so cant get any EML up to check codes. I need to get a long screwdriver out and put it on each of the injectors to listen for a rhythmic clicking sound from each injector as it sometimes sounds lumpy on idle in the mornings I've noticed. Following this I will run some injector cleaner through, check for vacuum leaks then replace the plugs myself for £40 seem worth while if none of this works then I may buy a single coil pack and swap it through the 4 cylinders to see if there is any difference. Failing all this ill be pretty stuck... fearing fuel pump or similar.
  20. Hi all, Not posted for quite a while and thats probably because my R has been faultless, in fact I was just praising it Saturday gone. Well went to visit Mazda dealership looking for a car for my now fiance and on the way home my R started to misfire quite badly on acceleration. I pulled up and noticed the idle was really really lumpy fluctuating up and down, had the whole car vibrating I also heard a pretty serious clicking/ticking noise.. My first thought was some sort of timing chain issue as the noise is coming from the left hand side of the engine if you were stood in-front of it with the bonnet up so I wasn't going to drive it home fearing catastrophic failure. Anyway I don't think the timing chain is the issue, It sounds to me like some sort of solenoid/sensor which is malfunctioning pretty seriously. I turnt the car off and on a number of time, rev'd it in neutral etc and all of a sudden the ticking went away, the idle is back to normal and the car drives almost faultlessly but for a tiny misfire which I can only get in 4th gear.. Weird I know! Well I plugged the OBD2 in when I got home and read the car, mistakenly i cleared the faults rather the reading them (its been a while) and I have nothing to go off until it reoccurs which I am sure it will soon. Just wondered has anyone here experienced anything similar? Dan
  21. Ahh do you trust the garage? Do a search on this forum I can't recall any which have needed a new timing chain as its stretched.. certainly not in 62k miles. Maybe take it elsewhere for a second opinion. Also might be worth doing the cam mag sensors like I mentioned at £30 a pop their and easy one to rule out which are quite common for problems.
  22. Hi, I personally haven't had this issue but from reading over the past couple of years I know that the camshaft magnets can be suspect! there is one on each end of the camshaft (top of the engine) the part is about £30 and is easily replaced with some basic tools. Id recommend you change one at a time (one is easier to access then the other) and you may find this solves your issue. I have seen all sorts of codes thrown up caused by these magnetic sensors over the last couple years. Failing that yes probs go see and good indie garage.
  23. No problem, speed limit on the dual carriageway is 70mph and I don't live in a city either. Nothing illegal happened.
  24. I have been running Stage 1 Unicorn software with stage 3 TVS gearbox software for a year now and it goes like a rocket, would recommend.
  25. It has been some time since I posted here... my R has been going strong, almost at 2 years of ownership, 1 year at stage 1 Unicorn. Made me appreciate the car on a roundabout today in wet conditions chasing a Merc E63 AMG, couldnt live with me round the bends, roundabout and exit of the roundabout, gave chase up to 70mph and backed off. Now I know the E63 has superior power but whats all that power if you cannot transfer it to the tarmac, The R was stuck to his rear like im sure you'd all believe up to 70. Pulled up beside him at the next roundabout and shared a nod of appreciation... I like to think he gave a nod admitting what is "just" a golf packs some punch! I nodded because, well who doesn't love the sound of a 6.3l V8? All good fun! Although I cannot stop myself from pondering over an F80 M3...
