Charles M
This seems to have turned into a BMW vs VW argument. I downsized from a 5 Series to a R Estate. The 5 was more comfortable and in 535d guise had a brilliant engine. It was though a heavy old car, and not as fun to drive as the R Estate. But it is somewhat comparing apples with pairs. But lets face it, this isn't really about a RWD/6Cyl/335bhp vs 4WD/4cyl/310bhp, is it? Its about the badge. If having a BMW badge is important to you, then go get a BMW. I find it risible that people feel the need to have to have a certain badge on a car, one that they don't usually own in the first place, in order to try and portray some sort of image. I guess I could be asked why I bought BMWs in the past. There was a very simple answer to that in that I wanted a RWD, 6cyl diesel and the choice was BMW, Mercedes or (in those days) Vauxhall, with their detuned BMW engine. 4WD 6cyl diesels then came along with Audi. I hate torque steer with a passion, so always discounted powerful FWD. And when it came to downsizing to the R Estate, I decided 4WD was what I wanted in a petrol, fast, small estate. I guess the other options were Audi S4, BMW 3 series estate, or maybe a C-Class. So the R was chosen. I look to how it drives and what it does, with scant regard to the badge. Are the R and the other options all going to be able to do 100k miles+ without falling to pieces and without costing an arm and a leg to run? Yes they are. So then it comes down to, if they can all do what I want and one costs £30k, why would I pay £40k+ for another? Cars are a phenomenal waste of money, so why waste more than is necessary (although there is a balance to be had, as I am sure that I could get from A to B in a 20 year old Daewoo). As it is, I love driving a "non-premium" brand even if I don't put any store in what a car says about me. But really, it was an easy choice, and came down to one simple thing. Quad pipes. I bet you drive a people carrier and are mad at the world as life didn’t turn out as expected for you. Ah. Small man syndrome.... I bet you wear a Seiko and buy your suits from Next 😂
Charles M
I wear a Seiko (to be precise - this one http://www.seiko.co.uk/collections/men/discover-more/sne141p1?referer=search&term=solar#.W0Yq2NJKiHs - and I get my suits from either Saville Row or a tailor who comes to visit. What has that got to do with BMW vs Golf R? You see, you still seem to be infatuated with what your hire car and other materialistic objects says about you. That's fine, but ultimately a little pointless and shallow.

Similar ish for me, serial BMW owner and fancied a change. it needed to be a fast Hearse, this meant 5 seconds or below, able to carry a Dalmatian and our luggage without needing a roof box, it had to be petrol, have a decent sports auto box. i knew a few people with R's and decent reviews, popped to see a few and worked out costs. bizarelly a F31 340i would be about same price as the Golf Hearse, however as I am (possibly) waiting for the G21 I went for the Golf R Hearse. While the R Hearse is brilliant to drive, it still fails at a number of levels, some of that is expected from dropping down in to the normal family car level. also let's face it, a 3.0 6 cylinder engine always beats a 2.0 4 cylinder engine, just no comparison really. Charles M
But, and it is a big but, the F31/G21 don't come with quad pipes.

Ah, there is another possibility and that's just going M car, which is a possibility. although I know of at least one 440i owner with quads. although the two Remus ones sound better than the Akrapovič quads.
