I’m a bit torn however tell me this correct, I just read earlier that for £700ish I can get a stage 1 remap which gives me a 0-60 time of 3.7s in a MK7 DSG, apparently the manuals need a stronger clutch.  I’ve never remapped a car but I’m loving the sound of that acceleration.  I’m assuming the same options are there for 7.5, if I can get a 3dr MK 7.5 I’ll go for that otherwise it may need to be the MK7, not in a rush so I’ll wait for the right spec car to come along

I have Stage 1 engine remap from APR which has made a nice difference. There is now DSG remap available from APR for the MK7.5 as well I believe. Think you are talking around £1500 for both remaps from APR.

@Shakeel The manual 3dr Mk7.5 R are out there, an example is below. Personally i think the DSG suits the Mk7.5 R very well, with them being 7 speed and holding enough torque on the stock clutch for a stage 2 (even stage 3 potentially). i think were some DSG 7.5R with ~450lb/ft on the stock clutch with no slip. Also the DSG farts puts a smile on your face every time you go through a tunnel. 😁

Hi Haych, great points about the DSG especially since I might go for a stage 1 once I’ve finally found an R that I like.  In all honesty I don’t really want to throw a load of money into changing potentially the clutch etc when a DSG can cope with a slight power hike.

You’ll probably find there isn’t much difference between fitting a clutch or a DSG remap. Performance sintered clutch is £920 fitted including vat. So not much difference by the time your engine map is thrown in. I’m just a bit old school and like to work the gearbox myself. There’s nothing like matching gears and revs on a spirited drive and changing gear when YOU want to. I’m not entirely up to speed on the workings of the DSG - sport manual, race mode, auto in whatever mode - just too many variables for me - but I’ve heard that even in manual mode, the gearbox will eventually change by itself. I did a trip to west Wales a couple of years ago and I’ve never had so much fun with my clothes on - plus I got a real sense of achievement from it. But each to their own - buy what suits your lifestyle or needs. I’ll happily stick with my three door manual for the foreseeable future, hence why I’m hoping to go for a remap and clutch. It’s telling that some manufacturers are still offering manual boxes on their performance models - Porsche and Jaguar being two.3a713b8bedca0325e36d026916dfc90d.jpg

Great comments Camelsac, this has been debated time and time again with the R gearbox, ultimately I am a manual guy.  I could have gone for a DSG R32 and I chose not to, I think I’m gonna have to test drive both.  Your comments on your trip to Wales is the kind of thing I used to say when I had my E46 M3, this is gonna be a close call.  Just out of interest how’s the clutch on the standard set up?

Mine’s just coming up to 38,000 miles and seems to be holding up ok but I don’t give it the beans until the engine oil is warmed up - maybe that gives the gearbox etc a chance to do the same but I have heard some horror stories though! I had mine from brand new so no one else has ever driven it and I’m not one for doing hard starts as in 3500 rpm and dumping the clutch. I think all the horror stories I’ve heard might be down to misuse although the clutch is supposedly a weak spot as it’s supposed to be from the lower powered GTi so I don’t know. VRS in Northampton reckon it won’t stand up to a stage 1 tune so it’s obviously a known thing. Maybe mine’s an odd one out that hasn’t suffered - yet!
