Thought it's time to post my Golf R, never really had the intention of spending money on this apart from servicing etc but really surprised at just how well these respond to tuning.

Previous car was an M2 competition but unfortunatly, needed it gone due to personal reasons. Currently really happy with this although have spent more then initially planned.

It was running a custom stage 2 map from a company down south when i bought it but this was never going to stay on as prefer my tuner to look after everything on the car. The TVS ecu/tcu tune also feels a million times better now!

Got the car to CLP Automotive (my local trusted tuner for years now), for a full service including haldex etc along with some other stuff.

Currently running:

  1. Stage 2 TVS ECU+TCU tune done by Dan at CLP
  2. Milltek Non Res Valved Exhaust (thanks to Marshy on here)
  3. Milltek Catless DP
  4. KW V3 Coilovers
  5. Clubsport S Brakes
  6. Ramair Intake
  7. Airtec IC
  8. APR Coilpacks
  9. SuperPro 24mm Rear ARB + Powerflex Engine Mount
  10. MPS4S Tyres

Still to do:

  1. Airtec intercooler
  2. APR Coilpacks
  3. MPS4S Tyres
  4. BBK
  5. Oettinger Spoiler
  6. SuperPro 24mm Rear ARB + Powerflex Engine Mount
  7. Stage 3...

Thanks for reading, any comments welcome.

What's the best thing for you about the tvs dsg tune?

I would say D holds gear longer resulting in a nicer daily drive for me, S is a little less aggressive then stock but can still be used well when pushing on. The combination of increased torque and a much better tcu software makes for an absolute joy of a drive now.

Great mods

How would you describe its overall drive against the M2 Comp?

I thought last year of selling on my APR Stage 2 R with a whole host of upgrades for an M2 Comp.

As an all weather tool I felt it inspires confidence, deploys it’s power and torque effortlessly. A mate of mine sold his M4 Comp for a 2018 RS3 which is now stage 2 running KW Clubsports. He loves it and the security and felt the M4 really stiff and jittery and couldn’t feel confident in the wet.

Overall drive and involvement i would say the M2 comp is on a different level tbh mate (and that's against an RS3 too as iv driven one) and was stock suspension/brakes wise. In the right conditions (summer), RWD performance cars are unbeatable, but come autumn/winter and they are a complete waste and you're you just like, what am i doing driving this?

I can honestly say hand on heart am very happy with my decision to go Golf R, it's so nice to be able to just drive it confidently in all conditions, such a great all round car that can be enjoyed all year round.

Thought you’d say that tbh

I like RWD if you have the space for correcting lock if needed but it’s pretty reckless on the road but great on track if it’s safe to do so and you don’t mind shredding the rears!!

I had a great tussle at weekend against a tweaked 997 Turbo at Castle Combe.

It was a Porsche tuning company from Bristol. Their car was running B16’s and stock rubber. Thought I’d get crucified but no.

On the main straight it was blistering quick and reeled me in till we got to braking zone into Avon Rise and Quarry and thru the chicane’s my smaller turbo low down punch out of corners kept it well at bay. No vids unfortunately but we had a good chat after session as he thought mine had over 500bhp but no 400bhp and on Racingline Springs, DCC, rear 034 Motorsport ARB and a Superpro Caster Camber bush kit.

I was in 19 inch MPS4S not my normal 18’” TD wheels and MPS Cup 2’s.

Cheap and cheerful but it works!

Next stop will be B16 or KW V3’s unless I go B16 Damptronic.

As I always tell people the MK7R with carefully chosen mods offers great “bang for your buck”!

The owner of this outfit remarked the problem of not only IMS bearing failures on most non turbo 911 in both 996/997.1 cars but nearly all now have big oil consumption due to the much known about bore scoring. Got 6 in workshops at moment all engines out having rebuilds. Normally a £10-£14k rebuild depending what’s spec on 997’s.

Boxster and Caymans all suffer.

Porsche sorted a lot of the issues out on 981’s.

Sorry I regress🙄

Nice! A well setup R is very capable in the right hands, i would think 500 is the sweet spot for these though once you have the suspension and brakes sorted, i'm either going stage 3 next year or buying a fl RS3 and going stage 2.

Slowly making the transition to AWD as iv owned RWD over the last 5 years or so.

Will post some of them below if anyone is interested!

To think when the f20-f23 1 series came out I couldn’t stand them having come from an E82 I moved away from BMW and just thought they’d ruined the car altogether, however now looking at the above facelifted models  and indeed the pre fls to right back to 2012 I think they look so good now especially in white.

Funny how over time my opinion changed so drastically , I didn’t like any of the previous golfs either yet the 7.5 for whatever reason just popped out to me, glad I got the 7.5 and it’s great for what we need as a family with the AWD and extra space, plus my wife likes it too.

I know at some point I’ll have to get an M135i pre fl in manual as a toy though before we head over to electric, ironically again I wouldn’t have entertained a manual at the time of looking as the ZF8 was/is an amazing box but again now times have changed and it would be a manual for me.

Kind of off topic but yea those ‘proper’ M135is and M140is are one hell of a machine.
