Hi all, I've been doing some searching and cant seem to find a definitive answer. I've got a Golf R 7.5 arriving on Wednesday and it has the Cadiz 18" alloys which I want to change. I really like the Spielberg wheels (more than the prets - yeah, start throwing your tomatoes now [emoji23]) but am struggling to find a decent genuine set. I dont want to be repairing any wheels I buy, plus want to put my own brand new tyres on. I also dont want to spend a fortune, hence why I've been looking at replica wheels for sub £500. I know the offset is slightly different and that they might be heavier, however I wondered if anyone had any experience running replica wheels? I've been looking at CMwheels as they post on various forums, but there is nothing about their wheels be CE certified or alike. Am I likely to have any problems running replica's, so would ideally like to hear from anyone who has used them, especially CM wheels (or another supplier they would recommend) and their experiences. I'm getting a base spec Lapiz R. It's one of the last brand new ones I could find so spec wasnt something I could change. It was a bit of a panic buy. Whilst others were out buying up toilet roll, I was looking for a deal in the last R before they disappeared forever [emoji23] This isnt my first R, I had a 7 when they first came out and loved it (bar the clutch failing twice) but that had the same bloody Cadiz wheels and I fancy a change. For the last 3 years had a Bi-TDI A6 avant 3.0 V6. It was nice, but a diesel and I missed the R. Given I am impatient and couldnt wait for the mk8, i decided to get the latest R (on finance for 3 years) and then can either get an 8 then, or before if I cant wait. Plus, the spec on the base R is so good now (compared to my pauper spec 15 plate) it was a no brainer.... and is almost as well specced as the A6 was.... and that has £7k of options on it! Anyway, any advice and comments appreciated. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

I had too had the clutch replaced at 5000 miles/7 months old. Had a battle with VW as they said the clutch warranty only extended to 6 months/6000 miles. They gave in when then eventually stripped it and found the pressure plate was faulty, so new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel all done under warranty. New clutch slipped once or twice again at 17k but lease was ended so it went back as it was. They also replaced the oil pressure sensor (although this wasn't faulty) before doing the clutch as they thought it was that, but when road testing the car afterwards the clutch slipped [emoji23] I also had a weird heavy clunk noise when changing direction rapidly, like something was moving on the subframe or under the front seats. Never had it checked mine you as it was only noticeable when driving hard. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

I miss my R... I had a lease as £179 inc vat/10k and it was a great car. The clutch in the manual was a weak link in otherwise a great all round chain (had clutch, flywheel and pressure plate changed at 5k under warranty). I've noticed since it has gone I've calmed down quite a bit... but I miss how it went round corners and roundabouts wet or dry, and get it right and you could get the back out a bit and it was so controlled. My long term average was 22mpg and whilst that didn't bother me, the small fuel tank means I was filling up every 250-280 miles which got a bit boring. I nearly went and bought an R after my lease was up, but I really wanted something a bit bigger and didn't like the look of the estate. I've ended up with an Audi A6 Avant black edition Biturbo. I seriously regret getting a diseasal although it's got pace to match the R in a straight line and off the mark and sounds amazing with the active sound exhaust. It doesn't corner at all as well and has the Quattro understeer which is pretty horrific when on a wet roundabout and forgetting I'm in a barge of a car! Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

I've done just under 17k on the car and 23 months old, replacement clutch flywheel and pressure plate at 6k and 7 months old and clutch slip again today... my car is totally standard. The clutch and assembly on these cars are utterly crap. Mine was replaced last time under warranty as they put it down to the failure of the pressure plate, but it took weeks to sort out. The lease on my car is up in a month so I'm hoping it doesn't get any worse and I can hand it back and not have the faff. I can't believe it's failing again. It never smells like burnt clutch and I've had loads of performance cars and normal cars and have never had a clutch issue before. I drive the car hard no question there but i don't ride the clutch etc. And it's always felt like the weak link. As much as I love th R, the general reliability/quality seems lacking. My adaptive headlights stop being adaptive very regularly (no errors), the rear parking sensors sometimes come on for no reason, there is a clunking sound underneath (seems to have gone for now) and when delivered, they forgot to connect the microphone for the Bluetooth. The main display screen also randomly goes black sometimes and won't work again unless you turn the car off. Anyway, back to the clutch. It slipped a few few times on the way home, is it likely that it will be ok to hand back at the end of Feb as it only slips under hard acceleration, or should I try and get VW to investigate again before it goes back? It's in for a service on Wednesday in any case.

Pretty sure you can reject a car for that... It's not that minor a mistake and was not what the op ordered so they would have been more then entitled to a refund of any deposit. Regardless, he didn't so it's looking at what options now exist. Personally I wouldn't have the seats re trimmed because although I've seen some excellent jobs, I'd be concerned about warranty issues both for the seat material and the manufacturer components as well as any future resale difficulties they may cause, and if you can live with the seats as they are, I'd be seeking the amount they would pay a trimmer back as compensation along with a service pack etc. as an apology. Go in high and see what you can get out of them.

My wheel got damaged when some wench reversed into my R and pushed the front wheel into the kerb. It's an insurance job now but the body shop estimator reckoned they couldn't repair the wheel because the damage was below one of the spokes so if they lathed the damaged part, the spoke would stick out too far unless they lathed that part too, but then that meant respraying the wheel black then cutting the whole face off down to the depth of the damage (which was relatively minimal as the wheel just grazed the kerb). That becomes a costly job because of the design of the wheel. As such they're just sticking a whole new wheel on. I know that's not too helpful, but bear in mind this when approaching some places. Pristine wheels are really good and will advise you honestly what is the best course of action. They usually accept an email with photos and will let you know how they'll repair it and how much. I damaged a wheel on our Abarth 500 years ago now and they explained the whole process and quoted by email... But it wasn't cheap as that was a diamond cut wheel and they only had to repair the outer rim. Good luck!

I'd get rid too. I think when you have a young family it's just not worth it and as the op says it's a company car, then hopefully no massive issue to get it changed for something else less attractive to oiks. I live in a very rural area and you couldn't stumble across my house unless you were looking for it, but since reading threads like is I've taken security seriously. I've got the benefit of being able to stick my R in a garage with a really secure garage door with no handles which can't be forced open and an alarm system etc. I don't have cctv but do have a 3inch thick steel lined front door and anti bump locks on each door. That said I don't hide my car keys as if someone does get in, they can take it without interfering with us.. We also had an experience the other week, in the dead of night we were awoken suddenly by smashing glass. First thing I did was leg it downstairs in my pants and open the utility door (we've got an old boxer dog but he's as deaf as a post) not sure what to do if anyone was there. Turns out it was the cat who decided to push an empty wine bottle off the worktop which shattered on the floor. Makes you think about it afterwards and what could have been.

Nail on the head there... Shame mine feels a bit vague now

Clutch is only covered to 6500 miles or 6 months which ever comes sooner...

Got the car back today and apparently it was the pressure plate fingers were weak causing poor operation of the clutch. The clutch was not worn but did have some burn sports due to this and they consider this to be the only contributing factor to this issue. Clutch and flywheel replaced as well under warranty as damage visible as a result of pressure plate. So what she told me yesterday doesn't quite match up with what they told me today. I hadn't ruined the clutch, the pressure plate was too weak which was causing the clutch to slip. Disappointingly the clutch feels compete different now. The bite is unpredictable and it shudders slightly at low speeds (noticeable as I got stuck on traffic on the way home). The pedal feels different too, can't easily explain it but the pedal isn't consistent and feels hard then soft or soft then hard as you press it and it is now much slower at coming up than before. The car also doesn't feel as responsive now and gear changes are much jerkier at lower speeds. Hopefully just bedding and and me getting used to it but I felt like an entirely different car to drive, but not in a good way.

Clutch replacement at 5,200 miles

Dropped the Golf off this morning with VW for the clutch slip issue to be looked at, again. Gearbox has been removed and clutch inspected and VW confirmed this evening a new clutch and flywheel are needed. Apparently there are blue spots on the clutch caused by burning/overheating but VW are covering the replacement under warranty - I didn't have to argue with them at all... VW warranty had agreed it with apparently before calling me. It makes me think they're either just a decent brand with decent customer service (I've come from Vauxhall... say no more) or they are silently accepting the clutches on the R are not up to the job. She said they appreciate it is an R so is going to be driven hard, but this is the only time they will replace it so to maybe drive it a bit more carefully. She wasn't being rude, but was suggesting it needs to be treated a bit more gently (I have only done 5200 miles and the front tyres are between 3-3.5mm!!! hehe (and no wheel spinning at all). Every car I have had has been driven hard and I've never had a clutch go. I am driving a horrible Jetta SE. It is just vile. It's a 64 plate but so archaic inside - it has a handle I have to pull behind the gear stick when parked and the fake wood trim makes me feel nauseous. I reversed into a parking space today (no sensors) and when I got out I'd left so much space a giraffe could lay down behind me and wouldn't get a cricked neck. From driving this Jetta I now know what it is going to feel like when I am a geriatric and awaiting death eagerly. I hope I get my R back soon. At least I've not had to fork out the £850+ they indicated it would cost and I'll try to be a bit more careful with the clutch from hereonin.

4 Yeah, but shame about the clutch!

Will take it up if I need to. Let's see what they say. And nope, £180 includes vat and 10k per annum. It was such a good deal that I couldn't resist it!!

I know. That's what I can't believe. I think it's been dodgy since I got it but only slipped properly in august and that's when I booked it in... but they said they couldn't look at it for 3-4 weeks and funnily enough at that point they tell me about the 6 month 6500 miles rule thingy. Convenient! They also then change the oil control valve even though I was clear about the clutch slipping and showed them videos. They spent 3.5 days changing that valve to road test it and experience the clutch slip, and to tell me to book it in again. When I tried to book it in, first of all they said they couldn't look at it for another 4 weeks at the end of October. Got them to book it in for the 12th Oct as the soonest they could do with a courtesy car for 3 days. They also said if it's not a warranty item then ill have to may £840 to which I argued and said I am not accepting liability for any cost without the evidence presented to me. And even then ill argue with them as 5k is not acceptable regardless of whether the car is now 7 months old. Anyway, we'll see what they say on Monday and whether they think I've managed to trash it in just 5k of driving - as you say it shouldn't have gone no matter how it is driven. To the op, I've outright owned my last few cars and to be honest in prefer now having the money in the bank rather than on the drive. My last car only lost £10k in 3.5 years but that was because I got so much off the list price. If I'd paid the list price of £30K+ I'd have lost £18k! Try to work out to total costs of leasing/pcp vs depreciation to see what works out best. I pay £179.99 a month for my R Inc vat!!!
