A Question for stage one owners (MOT)
Craig1971 replied to dan2312's topic in Modifying your Golf R MK7
I’m stage 2 with 200 cell sports cat & mine passed no problem -
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=269686.msg2476572#msg2476572 I’ve bought everything to do the same but I’m not using VW logo lights, just plain puddle. The above link is very detailed but I’m going to do it when the weather is better. I installed a Helix boot sub a few months ago & ended up removing the front door cards to sound deaden with Dynamat, quite tricky to remove the wiring, especially the driver side door. I’ll post my install when I’ve done mine, but it’ll be a couple of months before I do it.

I ended up having a local independent vw garage fit mine along with the transfer case as I’d got covid & then went away for a week. I supplied the garage with new bolts for everything that was removed. I had read about donuts bolts shearing after reusing them on Audi forums so for what they cost, it’s not worth the risk.

I did what was suggested last week, jacking the rear of the car up & trying to turn the prop shaft with large pipe grips & I couldn’t get it to move at all, so I bought a Ross Tech VCDS cable & did some tests as described by Matt at Haldex repairs. I emailed him the results & he replied that he doubted pump failure. Back to square one, bought some large stilsons & jacked the back wheels up, prop shaft turned with ease (fronts on the ground & in Park). I’m now on the lookout for a used transfer case & I’ve found a low mileage off a Skoda, part number 0CN 409 053 AD. Before I go ahead and buy it, can anyone confirm that this part will fit my 2015 R dsg. DaveGR mentions previously above that it’ll fit, just want to make sure before I bite the bullet.

Thanks for your reply, I’ll try that.

Hi, how did you diagnose transfer case failure ? I’m having traction problems, wheel hop under hard acceleration. I bought a prop shaft rear coupling thinking it was that but it’s in decent condition. Haldexrepairs website mentions jacking the front of the car up & videoing the prop to see if it rotates when engine is started & driving the front wheels which I have done. The prop turns, but it’s a little erratic, as if the transfer bevel gear is slipping slightly. Any help will be really appreciated.

Thanks for posting this thread, mines gone & was about to book it into a garage but I’m going to do it myself after seeing you write up & photos, top man 👍🏻

Fitted new boot slam vents, outer light foam seals & boot drain. I noticed some condensation in the boot about a week ago. Also cut a hole in the lower bung plugs & sealed the vents up.
-
Applied some sound deadening to my doors & door cards today along with some foam speaker rings, also used some cloth tape on the switches too. I fitted a Helix plug & play spare wheel subwoofer a couple of weeks ago & finished it off today. Broke the drivers window switch which added an hour to the job but happy with the results now.

It arrived today, not opened it up yet as I’m working nights, but wasn’t the bargain that I first bragged about. £101 import duties before the courier would deliver it, so that’s a total of £407. In hindsight, I’d have bought it direct from a VW franchise at £441, a lot easier to return in case of any failure, but you live & learn. I’ll not be able to fit it for a week or so, but I’ll post back with a review when it’s in.

That’s a nice car. I’ve spent £thousands on mine & the best mods for value in my opinion are stage 1 tune......might need clutch upgrade or dsg tune though, rear sway/anti roll bar & when you need new tyres, Michelin PS4. They where the upgrades on mine that made the biggest difference. I’ve done loads more but that’s what I’d start with. Cosmetic & audio mods are a personal choice. Good luck & enjoy your new car.

I’ve done a lot of research in the last few days & realised (much to my dismay) that I know absolutely nothing about modern car audio systems. Since posting about Dan’s Focal install, I now know that getting a custom system to work properly is above my skill set, & that I’d have to pay an audio shop to install & tune it which is over my budget. About a week ago I started looking for a Helix P&P sub but couldn’t decide what was more important.....boot space or spare wheel, hence the reason for a discreet amp/sub. I’ve been watching a Helix on ebay (German) for 336 euro’s plus 20 euros delivery so plucked up the courage & bought it without knowing the exchange rate which is £306.....I couldn’t believe I’d got it for that price. Prior to that I had rung my local VW dealer & £441 was their price & they weren’t for budging at all, so I was very pleased with my purchase, just now need to buy/rent a dongle when I received an email for the ebay seller asking for my chassis number as they won’t post the sub until they’ve programmed it......😀. If anyone else is after a Helix sub, audi-vw-ahstoye , is the ebay shop, but please wait till I’ve taken delivery & reposted on here, I wouldn’t want to be responsible for someone else falling prey to something to good to be true. Thanks for the above replies to my questions, if nothing else.....I’ve learned a lot in the last few days, but one thing I’ll take from Dan’s build is the dynamat soundproofing, it’s supposed to be a great mod for improving acoustics & reduced distortion on OEM speakers so I’ll be removing door cards & rear interior quarters in the near future.

Hi Dan, I've been looking to get a Helix subwoofer but couldn't decide if I wanted the boot top or the spare wheel version & then I saw what you've done. I'd much prefer to do the same. SpursMadave has quoted above that you have to set up the MIB differently for an external amp. Did you have any problems/issues setting it up, & also, did you use crossovers for the speakers ? Any advice would be really appreciated.
-
Thanks for the reply, but that’s who told me that he wasn’t sure it’d fit. I since found out that mine is the MIB1 Composition Media. I’ve seen the boot top sub on eBay from Germany, about £320, going to attempt it myself. I’d really like the wheel well round type but don’t want to run without a spare tyre.

Hi, I’ve been reading lots on this site about how good the helix subwoofer is & how easy to install, so much so that I decided that I want to get one. I emailed a company this morning who supplied them, only to be told he didn’t think it’d fit my car as it didn’t have sat nav. I also don’t have apple car play so I’m assuming I’ve got an MIB 1 infotainment system. Could anyone please shed some light on if this is true, or has anyone fitted a helix to a base model infotainment car. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I like that, looks good

I’ve got a BCS Powervalve res delete (earlier version) & I think it’s brilliant. Makes all the right noises, so I gave my original resonator away as I’ll never take it off!

CLP tuning in Sheffield sell Porsche Macan calipers £595. You can choose pads, discs etc from a drop down box on there website. I’ve just been looking at them as I need a brake upgrade too.
-
I got new drop links when doing mine, one of the triple squares split so I got 2 from eurocarparts, £25 for both. Mine is a SuperPro 24mm on the softer setting & they have been fine.

Been putting my ‘B12’s’ together with new mounts & bearings, hoping to fit on the long Easter weekend. Spoke to Awesome GTI this week regarding 4 wheel alignment, gonna give it a week or so beforehand just in case i have to re-tweak anything.
-
Fitted this today....inspired by other members who’ve installed the Aliexpress type. I saw the same on Ebay but it was 2-3 weeks for delivery & my impatience wouldn’t allow that so I got this one with 5 day delivery. Had to clean my pedals before taking this photo & now I’m going to have to do so every time I clean the car.

I’ve got one for a mk7 if you’re still interested

I went stage 1 with 10 months of an extended warranty still on the car. My reckoning was that nothing would go wrong with it standard, only if modded. Luckily for me it worked. Now stage 2 with other upgrades & planning more, coil overs etc. Car is an absolute weapon now, but as you’ve probably read before, car tuning is an expensive & slippery slope. They are a great car standard...... but something else when tuned, not trying to sway you but if I had money set aside, it’d be booked in for sure!
-
Standard to stage 1 is the best single mod for R’s. Hope you enjoy it.

Had my BCS res delete fitted yesterday at a local garage. Really impressed with the sound of the car now. I didn’t post yesterday as I hadn’t been on a motorway & wanted to see if their was any drone at cruising speed, which I’m glad to say their isn’t. I’ve got a catted Scorpion downpipe fitted & it sounds brilliant in normal mode, race mode sounds even better. I’ve got a Unicorn stage 2 map which has subtle pops & bangs on overrun (after hard acceleration) & now sounds amazing. If I drive nice & sensibly it’s hardly any louder than stock so won’t annoy my neighbours. If any of the more mature Golf r owners are wondering if they should get one......do it, not gonna divulge my age but I’ve got 3 Grandchildren, the oldest is now 8 & he can’t wait to hear it. Only issue when fitting was that a couple of inches had to be trimmed off my downpipe, but when I spoke to Nige at Powervalve, he did say that they had 2 options, one for a standard downpipe & one for a 3” downpipe, but their 3 “ downpipe. Overall very impressed. Massive thumbs up from me.
