These are my shortlist of garages for the South London area. Not used all of them myself, but they seem ok from what I’ve read elsewhere. TuningWerkes, South Croydon Volks Autos, Sutton TC Garage, West Sussex Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Error workshop only leave vehicle in P position, and more...
TonksyR replied to TonksyR's topic in VW Golf R MK7 Chat
According to VW roadside assistance, it was a flat battery. However, the battery tests ok, alternator is ok and he couldn’t see any logs indicating what caused the battery to go flat. I know all the doors were shut, lights were off, etc. Systems have been reset and the car is now being run for 1hr to get some juice back in the battery. If it happens again they will probably look to replace battery, but currently everything checks out as it should [emoji2369] Don’t think it helped that I jump started it before he arrived as he would have liked to see how it was originally. Oops. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I used the car for a good run to Eastbourne and back on Sunday, and used it again for errands on Wednesday. No hesitation to start and no errors in sight. On any previous cars I’ve owned, some with start start stop, there were symptoms of a failing battery. Maybe the R is a master at keeping a straight face/bluffing [emoji1787] Jump leads are nearly with me so will be interesting to see if this fixes the issue. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Thank you all. Typically, I don’t have jump leads and this is the only car here. Family member is popping over before the specialist so will see what happens. Didn’t think the battery would go after only 3 years! So didn’t even cross my mind. Also had the key fob battery die on me fairly recently and without any warning! Luckily that happened at Sainsbury’s so just popped back inside and purchased a replacement. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
As the title suggests, I have received the above message. I tried pressing the ignition button a couple of times and the same error popped up, but with many many lights on the dash going on and off. There was initially intermittent power to the dash, but the car would not start. Now there is nothing on the dash but the lights on the steering wheel illuminate. The car is now stuck in my single garage, the dash doesn't power on, the gear selector is locked in place, the car is making a clicking sound and it won't lock (it will keep unlocking though). Couldn't even press the assistance button by the sunroof 😂 so I had to call VW assist from my phone. They offered to send the AA this evening but said they can have a specialist out tomorrow by 1pm. I opted for the specialist. I did a search and can see it could be the usual switch failure, but are all the above issues related to the error code?

Potential new R owner but the car has a few red flags!

I’ve visited that dealer a couple of times in the past to view cars, and I wasn’t impressed on either visit. I noted on the cars I was looking at, and others present during my visits, that tyres had recently been changed but the brands were far from premium. Not something I want to see when possibly buying high performance RWD cars or from a “Prestige” car seller. Also, I don’t think the car is a 53 plate [emoji1787] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Yup. Plus the more you fill up, you move on to 2x points, 3 x points etc. Even better is that you can use the app to pay removing the need to enter the shop, saving me from buying all the chocolate bars I would usually walk past ha ha. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thankfully my R is not a daily. But, with the current prices I try not to let the tank go below half to save eye watering numbers when needing a full tank. Currently using Esso to make the best out of a bad situation by collecting Nectar points, and doubling up with my Nectar credit card [emoji1787] Every little helps ha ha. The first attempt didn’t actually work, so I was a bit concerned. Thankfully second time did otherwise there would have been tears [emoji1787] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

You both have earned yourself a beverage if we ever cross paths!! Many thanks!! Off to the Lake District next weekend and it would have sucked without the screen working. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So music works and buttons are responsive, but there is no picture on the screen. Any suggestions? Was working fine. Driving to the shops, stopped the car, popped out for 5min and when I came back and started the car, nothing. [emoji2369] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I’m with Admiral and so far so good, easy to update things online. And apparently I get a discount as my home insurance is with them as well. Although, I’ve not needed to make a claim… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Correct. You need to buy the whole calliper in order to get new brake plates [emoji2962] Had this confirmed by VW, and a VW specialist. Luckily, a kind member or two from here had a spare set laying around so I was able to get some second hand. Not very helpful of VW though. I did consider looking to see if the S3 equivalent would fit, but didn’t get around to it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If you have a replacement car in mind, why not try and find that car at a dealer and see what offer/deal they can put together for you? Not sure what kind of number you’re are hoping to achieve, but £30K+ is obviously lot of money for a private buyer to spend. Especially when most these days seem to be looking for PCP/Finance deals from dealers, that also come with warranties and other incentives a main dealer can offer. Try Motorway. I was going to sell the R recently for an M so tried Motorway. A guide price of £28.5k was suggested and I received an offer over £29k. In the end the M didn’t happen so I didn’t go ahead with the sale. I just checked again on Motorway and the guide price is now over £29k, so you may be pleasantly surprised. For comparison, I was offered a few £k less at a trader against a different car. So for now, it looks like Motorway is a good place to sell. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This was my understanding (5w30). I called another dealership and asked them if this was ok (didn’t part on great terms with the dealership who did the service), and they said they would have used the correct oil for my car. I’m half tempted to get it drained and get 5w30 back in. I’m no oil expert so don’t know if there is a problem using 5w40, it’s more that everywhere I look, 5w30 seems to be the correct grade to use [emoji2369] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Apologies if this has been covered many many times before, I’ve searched but not found an answer. I have a 2019 GPF which was previously serviced by VW with 5w30. Most recently, February, the R received its second service but this time (different dealership) VW used 5w40. I thought, unless tuned, 5w30 was the way forward with GPF cars? Anyone else using Castrol Edge 5w40 (VW 505 00 / 505 01)? Can’t see any other options so assume this is ok. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

AVOID - VW Motorline/Marshall Coulsdon Didn’t complete the Haldex filter clean as promised during multiple conversations. Only informed me they hadn’t completed the filter clean when being presented with the bill. Scratches appeared on the drivers door, both rear arches and the roof, plus an oil slick on the roof after a panoramic roof clean/service. Conversations did not get off to a good start. Scratches could have been there before I arrived, the filter is not a serviceable item, etc. Followed by, “the car is put on ramps and no one could have caused the marks”. I’ll add that as their MOT machine was broken, it was taken to the neighbouring Audi garage, so some of the marks could have occurred there. The service manager also stated that if the car had been cleaned, the oil on the roof wouldn’t haven been present when I took the car back. Now, on arrival I did ask them not to clean the car where I was informed it wasn’t down to be cleaned anyway. So not sure where he was trying to go with this [emoji2369] To be fair to VW, we reached an agreement where they would redo the Haldex service at a reduced cost to me, and they offered to have the car polished. However, I didn’t appreciate some of the service managers remarks/excuses, and so I don’t intend to let VW Coulsdon near my car again. I’ll eat the cost of the Haldex filter clean elsewhere. They have also paid to have scratches removed by a detailer. Thankfully, all the marks have now been removed. I just need to look for a more careful main dealer, or, use an independent garage and keep all the bills ensuring only OEM parts are used to maintain the 2 year VW warranty. Follow up on this. For anyone who has the panoramic roof clean/service, I would suggest checking your roof as soon as possible after you have the car back. Apparently, VW Coulsdon think that the panoramic roof clean/service also includes scratching the roof and leaving oil residue across most of the roof. I didn’t think to check the roof on pick up, but it was noticed a few days later when the R was being cleaned. I’ll be adding VW Coulsdon to the avoid list. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Is it the same if you put the steering in Race mode/with things stiffened up? If you have DCC, how about if you switch through the various comfort levels? Could you perhaps let someone else drive it to get another opinion, or maybe find another R to test drive at a local dealer? Steering feel can be quite a personal thing depending on what you’re used to. I used to have an S2000 and before I collected the car, the dealer put on some fresh hedge finders. I didn’t know they were doing this, it was becasue the tyres were below X mm so they were required to replace them. With the hedge finder specials, the car felt like a wallowing boat and was very unpleasant/unstable to drive. Switched to some Bridgestone RE050 and all was well. I’ve not had experience with Goodyear Asy 5, but have tried Asy 3, albeit on a different car. They were fine, but the sidewalls were rather soft which was good for comfort, but not the best when you wanted to go for an enthusiastic drive. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

After I spotted the marks, I actually did end up speaking with the service manager. He was ok ish, but at first said they’ve done what was required for the Haldex service. I explained I understand that, but I had explicitly asked twice (and I mentioned it that morning, so 3 times in total) that I wanted the filter cleaned and I was told it would be, which means if I want the job done “properly” I would need to pay for it again elsewhere. This was followed by “it’s not needed” and that I can show him plenty of photos from other owners that show otherwise, etc. Basically we went around in circles. If you can’t do it that’s fine, but don’t tell me you will do it, present me with the bill and then tell you didn’t do it. Could have been avoided if they told me in the morning. Without meaning to bash the dealer, the service/health check video I received was also pretty useless. May as well not bothered recording it. Basically said health check is all ok and proceeded to show me tyre reading depths between each line in the same tyre [emoji1787] err thanks. I didn’t let them wash the car, but some how marks appeared where I know there wasn’t any. Perhaps from people brushing against the car. Or, when it was at Audi being MOT’d because VW’s machine was broken apparently. VW Coulsdon are now Marshall. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well, despite twice being told on the phone that yes the filter would be cleaned and that photos could be provided, and on the morning of the service me requesting the filter to be cleaned and photos taken (notes were made on the job sheet)……. The filter was not cleaned. I wouldn’t have minded so much if they had told me first thing that it wouldn’t be done, but to tell me when the bill was due irked me. If they would have informed me the filter wouldn’t be cleaned first thing, I would have said not to do it and I’ll get it down elsewhere. Service manager is supposed to be looking into if they can do it again with me only paying the difference (labour and parts/seals). Not heard anything yet, will give them until Monday before I give them a nudge. Not holding my breath. They also added a few hairline scratches to the car. Nothing that won’t polish out, but that’s not the point. Undecided if I’d use the dealership again. Think I’ll travel and try Medway next time. I also noticed the invoice didn’t state what oil was used so had to call them when I got home, 5w40, allegedly… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

As it seems no one has a spare alloy wheel I can borrow, it looks like I will need to use the space saver to get back from the garage who will be sending my Pretoria off for repair. So the question is, does it make a difference if the space saver goes on the front or rear of the car? Had a quick Google and couldn't see an answer and want to ensure there are no adverse affects from it being on the rear. Obviously I would be driving slow, so in theory the Haldex wouldn't be engaged and therefore nothing bad happening.

I owned a FK2 for a short period of time before selling it to fund a property purchase. I enjoyed mine whilst I had it, but there can be issues with the gearbox. I think you’re either lucky or you’re not. Have a look on https://type-r-owners.co.uk/. I tend to be cautious when spending large amounts of money, so due to the above potential issue, my money would be spent at a Honda main dealer only. Buying from a main dealer will get you a better warranty. Very practical car though. Good rear space/leg room, and the boot is a good size. How you feel a car drives and handles is a very personal thing, and whilst others rave on about MPS4S, I found they didn’t suit the FK2. Previously, I had Continental 6 and the car felt very stable and the steering feel was good. MPS4S did improve comfort and traction, but the car lost its sporty feel and the back end felt very unstable. Once you’re happy with your tyres, they are a completely different animal to the Golf R. I do like my Golf R, it’s effortlessly fast, comfortable, and subtle. But, if I wanted to go out for a blast on a weekend and I had the choice of taking out the Golf R or a Type R, I’d take the Red H. I’ve not owned one myself, but if you have the budget, the FK8 is supposed to be the better Type R. I still keep looking at them now….. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

When I had my new tyres fitted, the garage I used marked 2 of my Pretoria’s. One more noticeable than the other. Thankfully they have taken responsibility, but in order to have the wheels repaired, I need to drop off or courier the wheels to Lepsons for refurbishment. My car isn’t used during the week, but should the need arise I only have the space saver in the boot. So, would anyone have a 19” alloy or two, ideally with tyres, that I could borrow whilst Lepsons work their magic? I’m located in the BR3 postcode and am willing to travel if needed. I would of course repay anyone with beer, cash, IT related tokens ha ha. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
