Have same issue on a 2016 Mk7 GTI with 70k miles.

Martins Garage would not fit new thermostat without an assessment charge of 1hr @ £150. Total estimate is an additional 3hrs labour plus cost of parts: £366 for thermostat housing and £82 for water pump. Total cost will be approx. £1200.

Decided to keep topping up as leak is very minor at the moment.

From below a small 'hanging' drip can be seen below the thermostat housing.

If it gets worse I will consider using a coolant sealant.

Another thought is....Why do garages insist on changing the housing when it is the seal that leaks ?

It's not a cheap part, made worse by access which ramps the cost up.... resulting in an annoying repair cost.

I wouldn't use coolant sealant in these engines if you can avoid it. Thats my recommemdation anyway.  It'll have the potential to bite you..hard... later. or cause someone else misery and pain. Best avoided and if it worsens, bite the bullet or diy yourself.

Also, re the opening post in thread link to video from Charles,  humble mechanic, FYI only for subsequent resfers of this thread, - although it does bear a general similarity, the video is on the mk6 gti platform which is a gen 2 ea888, not gen 3 as in mk7 gti, R.

The gen 2 suffered other issues,  and the odd coolant leak but the gen 3 introduced the destined to leak water pump ( with thermo module), from original manufacture.. so don't take the form of that waterpump or the exact comments, for the gen 3 platform.
